Bring back these kind of cars.
They were wonderful and elegant in their time.
I couldn't agree more ,always a good topic of conversation. Alan/ Merseyside.
Had to watch this as it reminded me of my dad with our Morris Oxford in the early 70s. Lovely to be reminded 😊
In the 1960s my first car was a Morris Minor which I had to crank quite often. My brother had an Austin Westminster of 2600cc I often cranked for him as well and I also cranked my dad's Rover. There is a knack to it and it was a good thief detterent !
Fun times cranking a morris minor. We had one for 25 years
First law of crank-starting a Minor. Always do it right handed. I'm a lefty and tried it once, left handed, only to get cracked across the wrist by the starting handle, a painful lesson I never repeated.
Really informative video! I plan on buying one of these sometime in the near future, and am trying to gather information on how to look after and properly operate them.
Glad it was helpful! Depending where you are in the world, they are pretty easy to get and obtain spare parts. Make sure to do plenty of research to know exactly what you want to get. As long as you look after them and keep the crucial components in tip top shape, the car will be safe and reliable. If you have any queries I am happy to help, good luck with your search!
They should have never got rid of starting handles it would help to save the battery especially in the winter months. My first car was a bullnose Hillman. Minx always crank started in the winter months started every time. Alan Merseyside.
I agree, it’s getting cold here and the battery isn’t able to crank the car sometimes. Starting handle saved my bacon too many times.
I had a 65 Morris when I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford in the late 70s. Loved the car, but had to crank start it a few times after the dynamo went bad. Most of the time cranking it was uneventful, but a few times the kick-back almost ripped my arm off. I wish someone showed my the right way to do it back then.
Good advice. I once owned a Bond MInicar that had a kick-starter under the bonnet. When I used it and it kicked back it almost broke my leg.
Ooo yikes. Live and learn I guess haha. Do those cars have a motorcycle engine in them?
Donald Healey visited Toronto in the late 1950’s. Healey, and previously my mom, convinced my dad to trade in his 1954 100-4 for a new Morris Minor. If only he’d kept that Healey.
@@KingTriangleCat They’ve always been well beyond my budget, but the rarer they get the more they go up. I go to bringatrailer to drool
Enjoyed the video. Just one point; it is always safer to only pull … no push the crank on any engine. I set the crank to around 7:00 and pull to 11:00. Doesn’t need to be fast if you have a clean ignition and good compression.
Absolutely - if it kicks back when you arm is fully extended to push, it will break your arm or dislocate your shoulder.
@@brettbuck7362 I have had many a kick back on High compression plant, such as Dumper trucks and Water pumps back in the day. Believe me, it`s No fun 👍
Can you use your foot and use the handle like a kick starter?
I haven’t tried but I guess it could work but it might not be a good idea lol
Lastima que ya no existe esa palanca para arrancar los autos de esta época porque si te quedaste sin bateria no hay forma de arrancar el motor a menos que uses un puente (Otros cables y otro auto que te ayude)
Please use your left hand so that you thumb is on the outside and cannot get caught on the crank of the handle.
If fuel pump has lever,, fill up carburettor before cranking
No sir, Morris minor has an electric fuel pump not a mechanical one driven off the engine. Comes on when the ignition key is activated so the carburettor will always have fuel.
Owning two Minors, my process is to turn on ignition, let carb fill with fuel, turn off ignition, hand crank over two revolutions thus priming the engine, THEN turn on ignition and give one quick jerk on the crank. @@KingTriangleCat
Sounds good, I'll have to give it a try sometime! Cheers :-)@@johnquilter7620
How to crank start a Morris Minor SAFELY
I had to use the starting handle on my 1970 Morris Traveller last week, as the starter motor failed. A passing couple in a supermarket car park laughed and said it reminded them of the old days!
