I just re-watched OHMSS last night. It's a film with many great scenes, and this one is absolutely perfect. The music is impeccable at setting the excitement for what is to come while underlining the current tension. John Barry deserves credit for being a pioneer in combining a traditional orchestra with the Moog synthesizer. The writing is superb, as seen in how Tracy appropriately quotes James Elroy Flecker and her father's work at convincing the air traffic controller of the purpose of his flight. Finally, the cinematography of the helicopters against the rising sun adds beautiful visual variety. This is an underrated movie, not just in the Bond universe but as a standalone action thriller.
For ages I've been trying to find where this piece of poetry comes from. It's said by Diana Rigg in On her Majesty's Secret Service as she looks out of the window of Piz Gloria at the sun rising over the alps - and with the incoming helicopters approaching. Thy dawn, O Master of the World, thy dawn; For thee the sunlight creeps across the lawn, For thee the ships are drawn down to the waves, For thee the markets throng with myriad slaves, For thee the hammer on the anvil rings, For thee the poet of beguilement sings. I even wrote the opening line in the book on the top of Kilimanajaro as the sun rose. I've finally found the source, courtesy of an excellent Bond/OMHSS site. It's derived from a play by James Elroy Flecker called The Story of Hassan of Bagdad and How He Came to Make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. A quick trip to Project Gutenburg provided the original text: It is the Caliph's dawn. JAFAR Thy dawn, O Master! ISHAK Thy dawn, O Master of the world, thy dawn; The hour the lilies open on the lawn, The hour the grey wings pass beyond the mountains, The hour of silence, when we hear the fountains, The hour that dreams are brighter and winds colder, The hour that young love wakes on a white shoulder, O Master of the world, the Persian Dawn. That hour, O Master, shall be bright for thee: Thy merchants chase the morning down the sea, The braves who fight thy war unsheathe the sabre, The slaves who work thy mines are lashed to labour, For thee the waggons of the world are drawn-- The ebony of night, the red of dawn!
How good was Lazneby's brief wry smile when Draco bullshitted at 2:49. As much as I love Sean Connery I could not imagine him this movie. Brilliant film all around
There was a push to get Skyfall nominated for Best Picture. I might be jumping the gun, but this and From Russia With Love also could've gotten that type of love.
This scene shows why Bond falls for Tracy. She's not just a petulant brat with a rich daddy, and reckless risk taker, in this scene she shows she's also a cool hand. From being off hand with Blofeld, she hears her father's voice, and instantly creates a credible plan. Her boredom with Blofeld's vanity and bloated ego, is formulated into a plan to use those very traits against him. His distraction and annoyance with the air traffic control, showing her the way to distract him. This she does, a siren leading him onto the rocks of his own vanity. The last line of the poem, "The poet of beguilement sings", shows the clever trap she's set. A cool hand indeed.
Diana Rigg's character of Tracy was a fully developed person and not just a piece of eye candy with a double entendre name hanging off 007's arm. Smart, attractive, classy, tough, witty and a risk taker, she more than held her own against Bond. Whether she was at the wheel driving a sports car in a high speed chase, skiing down the mountain like an expert whilst being pursued by hencemen, quoting poetry to distract the main villain, or engaging in armed combat with a couple of bad guys, it's no wonder why Bond fell for her.
Been looking for this scene so many thanks for posting! I believe this is a massively underrated Bond film - as per earlier comment, the music here (and throughout the entire film) is amazing. Dianna Rigg was the best Bond girl EVER! A beautiful, intelligent woman that the audience actually cares about vs. the bimbos they use now. I even thought George Lazenby was a pretty good Bond - he just got hammered as he was trying to fill Connery's footsteps (which was always going to be difficult)!
These wonderful scenes between Tracy and Blofeld exemplify why Savalas is the best Blofeld for my money. He had the charm, intelligence, class, yet air of menace that I feel defines Bond’s arch nemesis. In an alternate reality, you could see him and Tracy making a terrific couple
Apparently Barry knew Connery's absence meant he had to step up his game & he did, even if title theme had no lyrics. Pixar used his OHMSS theme on 1st Incredibles trailer.
On the soundtrack I think that was called Over and Out. Journey to Blofeld's Hideaway was used when Sir Hillary Bray (Bond) flew up in a helicopter to Piz Gloria for the first time. I am full of useless information.
One of the most amazing things about this film was, not only did Peter Hunt decide to "do the book", the film actually improves on it in several ways. Among them, this is probably the only Bond film adaptation where both the main villain and the main girl had their roles ENLARGED from what they were in the book, instead of trimmed down for the sake of action and "style". Savalas may not be "right" according to the book, but he's WRITTEN better than any other version of the character, and Savalas is such a damned good actor he just RUNS with that. Personally, it only recently occured to me who the really "right" actor in the 60s would have been, who would have been perfect to be in ALL of the films as Blofeld...... George Sanders. I've never even read a hint that anyone ever considered him... what a shame!
I'm Greek, and Telly Savalas is Greek, and advertise Greece in the fim (What were all the world's charms to mighty Paris, when he found that first dawn in the arms of his Helen?), but for Blofeld Yul Brynner is closer to the role, as required by the film series. Savalas as Greek and Balkan, must take the role of Yul Brynner in ''Battle of Neretva''.
@@ΜακηςΛ-ε5ρ Yul Brynner would have been good also as Blofeld. Savalas is good in being Greek as in the books his mother was Greek even though himself is from Poland.
I saw this on t.v. as a kid and thought "what? Kojack as Blofeld?" but now I think he's the best. He's actually a match for Bond physically and is arguably more charismatic than Lazenby. Lazenby isn't bad, but Connery vs Savalas would be epic.
Might just be the best bond film. In terms of as a movie, it's kinda brilliant. Cinematography, plot, performances, music. Every bit a classic. This, Frwl, Thunderball exemplify Bond
Over and Out. About one of the best Tracks of John Barry's Scores to James Bond. And that is saying something! And yet exactly this track is not used properly. It should had been placed without much frontal noises. At least for one Minute. This track I first realised while listening to the soundtrack album. I think I do not have much else if anything else at all to criticize about the Bond Films from Dr. No up to Licence To Kill. When then it was over and out for James Bond (Films).
In the movie, these attackers were committing a WAR CRIME; of which using the Red Cross icon on attacker helicopers is prohibited according to the Geneva Convention.
What WAR CRIME?! Preventing SPECTRE from neutering the planet by spreading bacteriological warfare via innocent women? If you're the Red Cross I am NOT donating this Xmas.
I noticed this too, Bond used to have to assemble a group to fight the villain's group at the end(OHMSS, Spy Who Loved Me, etc.). I think they stopped this with Pierce and turned him into a one man army. I always enjoyed him needing a team to defeat a group.
Just astonishing cinematography, and it's cool that they allowed Draco and Tracy to have their own badass moments.
This scene is one of the reason why OHMSS is the Best Bond film and will probably never be equaled.....

And gets misty-eyed and is pained on mention of her long after she's gone.
THE LOOK ON HER FACE WHEN SHE 👂 HEARS HER FATHER'S VOICE SAIDS IT ALL DADDY!!!!
She is a fantastic character!
With the logic of Lazenby's choice, Diana Rigg doesn't need in the film. A blonde model (Tracy is blonde in book) must take the role.
Probably best Bond ever-John Barrys music score was fantastic!
No probably about it!
Still think. It is the best Bond movie, great actors ,great scenery, ,special memories. I was born in 69 !!
