Allis Chalmers HD5 | 2-71 Detroit - Will it Run after 17 Years?

- My brother bought this 70 year old Allis Chalmers HD5 crawler loader that sat in a field for 17 years. We hauled it back to his house, but the engine had major internal issues. He had the cylinder head rebuilt and it's time to see if this old girl will run again!

these guys gets a 70 year old rust bucket to start in less time then it takes me to start my lawn mower each Saturday.
The miracle is not that you got it to run but the fact that two brothers were able to do it and get along together so well . My hat's off to you , God bless . Really enjoy your videos .
We do fine working together.
@@WatchWesWork You are blessed. My brother stopped talking to me over 10 years ago and won’t even tell me why.
@@gs1100ed Obvs 'cos he's a dick. You can't choose your family. Keep trying, though, it'll be worth it in the end.
FYI I bet we WOULD watch a 2 hour “dropping stuff” compilation. Try us and see! 😊👍
😂
Me two! Sorry dropped an O !
Old Detroits never die...they just keep on keeping on.
When I was a boy there used to be a Chalmers tractor production factory just down the road. I went there when I was fifteen to start as an apprentice. Shows you how old I am, they were good days, and the old boys taught me everything they knew.
Wow. I don't think Allis has made any tractors or equipment in my lifetime.
I had an HD-5, loved it. It is an agricultural tractor with a loader kit. Some recommendations: go ahead and pull the fuel tank off and remove the left and right steering brake/steering clutch covers. There are two holes in the bottom that I believe are 1-1/4 npt. If holes are open, pack rats and mice will fill the cavities with debris. Clean them out before engaging. I had on the that broke beyond repair. No part was available at the time and had to have machine shop fab up a replica. (Some resources parting machines out on antique tractor forums after) Clean and lube it all up. Some zerks in there too. It is a tight spot to work in and well worth the effort to same a lot of hours and busted knuckles. Also be very careful running with no water. Had a hole in radiator too. Brought truck into pasture as close as I could to haul it back to shop, didn't make it 30 yds before it came apart. Sad day...... I built a canopy for it and extended muffler above canopy. Made a huge difference, still needed ear plugs when working it long or hard. Pull floor plate up to reveal clutch inspection cover on top center. It has an adjustable clutch. Inspect the mechanical linkages and make sure true and square. Several cotter keys. Make sure they are appropriate size and not falling g apart. Several grease zerks in there too.
That will be very helpful advice for me, as i just got my grandfathers HD-5 running again after 2 years. it had 2 stuck exhaust vales and 1 stuck injector. she has not pushed dirt or worked in over 20 years, so i am being careful and trying to check everything i can. I have to repack the seals in the tracks, because she has a good leak coming from both tracks. that's why she got parked.
Definitely want to see more on this cool little dozer
We're working on it. He has the radiator patched up.
technically it's a crawler loader, not a dozer
@@WatchWesWork you should do a video in you dropping stuff
YEAH Buddy! Another Frankendozerstein LIVES!!! Good job Wes and Brother!
Ship collisions
Woohoo! Sounds like a dirtbike trying to be a dozer! Or a dozer trying to be a dirtbike! That's a whole new engine sound!
That's what you call a good old girl...! waiting for someone to start her up again after so many years.
I live this sort of video, seeing old bits of machinery being brought back to life.
"will it idle?" Proceeds to rev it to the max! 😂
you need to run detroits wide open or else they wont produce enough oil pressure
Absolutely awesome two years later as first I get to see this thank you gentlemen
I spent a half hour today watching a video of a guy I dont know try and start a 70 year old crawler. Ain't the internet great?
To be fair, it only took around 16 minutes to get it started...
@@WatchWesWork They can say what they want about Detroit engines. To only take just over a 1/4 hour to start is incredible after sitting for ages. Only Detroit's can do it because of the blower. Cummins take forever and blow grey smoke everywhere. One of the best 2-71 videos on UA-cam in regards to history etc being an Allis Chalmers dozer.
..great to see old iron going back to work...great vid, good job..
You could tell it wanted to run again!!! MADE IN THE U.S.
Sure did!
Allis Chalmers, they never die
I love the old 2 stroke Detroit’s. As long as you know how to service the throttle and injectors they are bullet proof.
That one is running without any water
With you on the job Wes I know it will run and better than before. Another great video from a professional. Thank you so much.
Good luck! I love seeing old iron brought back to life from the scrap heap.
Keep up the good work Wes. We love watching.
The video of you hauling this home was the first one I watched from you. Nice to see this running again.....sitting for 17 years seems to be the sweet spot!
Ive been waiting for this day!!
Yay! That was fun to watch it splutter to life, please do make more videos on that thing, I'd love to see it work as it should.
I can't believe he ran it so long without coolant.
Takes my diesel a really long time to warm up
Its a Detroit Diesel. Those things are near indestructible
The problem with running the 2-71’s fry is it burns up the head gasket. The 2-71 is like the “low block” Detroits that use a traditional head gasket
I wouldn't have run it half that time.
Is this the only problems you have. To look if anybody let run things without water? You are poor guys. You have to go playing outside with your little small iq like a toast
I just used my 1956 Allis Chalmers hd6g today. Still running strong!
I enjoyed watching 2 brothers working together. My brothers and I do some projects together. Special memories.
Beauty! Love the thought of the 2 cylinder 2 stroke Detroit
carl lagle indeed, they made several models of Detroit diesel, the smaller 53 cubic inch, or the larger 71 cubic inch. I usually find that off-road applications had the 53 series, we have had several dynahoe 190-4 backhoes and they have all had 4-53s, this dozer looks like it was built around the time 53 series came out. I am probably wrong about that though.
@carl lagle www.dieselduck.info/historical/01%20diesel%20engine/detroit%20diesel/index.html#.Xmgoz_RlBhE seems to be a pretty informative webpage, what was it 110Cubic inch? They have made so many odd ball things, it's neat to see the relics.
Watching your process brought back some similar issues that I had inherited a machine similar ...possibly only a few yrs newer with a buds engine...pulled the head new rings rod bearings and valves...it gave me fits to get started ..had the starter and injectors rebuilt..it ran great
Nice!
This dozer is well worth the investment to save a rad and oil before the clutchs and tracks . Please more video's to see if you get a first move now we have success in a first start. Awesome.
...and then all of UA-cam was sittin on the edge of their chairs sayin "c'mon baby; you can do it"....
Well I learned a thing; I did not know how a 2 stroke diesel worked. Thank you for the explanation and getting this fella flexing again.
If you want to see more on Detroit's like the 12 71 and 8 71 goto De Boss garage they blow one up by letting it run away and they have a few others that they are trying to find homes for Rich does a great job of showing and explaining them if you're not familiar with them.
I spent a number of years running a AC HD 5 like this except it was the dozer blade and winch version. The oil company I worked for had one and I built a lot of roads and well locations with that old dozer. I loved running it the sound that Detroit makes when your working is amazing not to mention that little 2-71 sure had the power. We had the engine completely rebuilt and put new undercarriage on it made her one fine machine.
That's awesome I have that exact dozer I just bought it a year ago and I love it! Just picked up a carco model e winch for it today. Im using it to build a dam for my future lake. Great job guys cool vid!
Nice. A winch would be really handy.
Good stuff....
Can’t wait to see the next installment
Purring softly like a brand new Tesla. 😁👍
That's the funniest thing I've read in a while!
Lots of memories here, I operated two of these old AC Tractors way back in the early 60's, a Loader and a Dozer, We carried a can of Ether pellets to help start these old Ladies, there was a pump canister on the dash to drop an ether egg (What We called them) then drop the needle and pump it, started every time
Day just got better 😄
Both tracks froze, 10 inches deep, and not ran for 23 years. Offered it to a logger for scrap value. I told him we used to pull it in 3rd to start it. Skidded it for 200 yards. I told him to pick up each side and drop a couple feet, and to hit rear track up high with dozer blade to chisel it forward. Nothing to lift with, but first strike from behind with blade, pop. Freed both tracks. Pulled it and had it running and driving within 50 yards. Smoked like mad, would hide a battleship, but cleared pretty quick. I told him I never thought I'd hear that run again. These are easy to pull to start. Mine was orange with big bucket. Seemed like an older, bigger AC.
We definitely need more videos man! This thing is awesome
Cool project looking forward to the rest!!
Would really like to see another video on the out come of the HD5G. I have the same machine and absolutely love it! Super easy to work on and massively over kill built for its size. Great work guys and again hope to see a follow up vid!
LOVE this THANKYOU FOR SHARING!
Absolutely love seeing videos with these old Detroit's that haven't been run in forever. From the videos I've seen on UA-cam as long as the rack doesn't stick they're pretty much indestructible. Deboss garage tried to run one away and it just wouldn't and even when it did and then died it started right back up. Although it did then proceed to open a new service hole in the crankcase lmao
They was a Tough old tractor. I started operating with a1957 Allis Chambers HD6 Dozer.....You had to have 8 arms and 4 feet it seemed like....LoL.....Glad to see You got the old Girl running....
I have a cousin with an HD6. His has a Buda diesel engine.
Your comment on the cable hit home in my 72 years of my life I have had 2 friends die from snapped cables get up anyone standing in the way
Videos like this are badass Wes. This is what brought me to your channel. Love these. Also your brother is pretty chill and subtle!
Heh. Yeah he rarely gets upset.
I had the same type engine in our missile launcher in the Army. A 2-stroke diesel which the fuel rack DID get stuck in the full throttle position. We had to smother the intake with a user's manual that was 3 inches thick. All while the driver is sitting in the track driver's seat hold the laterals (steering/braking) hard to keep from running over me. We tried opening the drain cock of the fuel filters but only got a great soaking of fuel. Never forget it. Them damn engines were hell to maintain and keep running. Ahh the memories.
Thanx for filming
I have also waited for this one, amazing, they did some really good quality engines back in the days!
It's not clean or efficient, but it sure does work!
danne77sthlm Wes said , and the EPA hated them !!!
@@WatchWesWork Weird thing is....now old gasoline engines are really crap. They stink and they make no power for fuel used. But old Diesels. Not so much. Its crazy how long a 1960s Agricultural Diesel will run with one tank of fuel. And once warmed up and at medium load...not even much smoke. Just hot, slighly smelly "air".
I have new respect for that starter motor!
Good job guys. That thing was built to last👍
"Might as well sell that Cat." LMAO!!
I am waiting all of your videos regardless of how long they are and what you are doing. How does one learn something without paying attention regardless of the WOW factor. I watch the videos because of your talent and diagnosis skills. Great day and enjoy your Sunday. Thanks for your time and effort with your videos. I enjoy watching them.
Wow , that was freaking awesome. I love this channel.
Nice Crawler, love this.
you're the only channel I have the notifications turned on for. I was on my way from the DMV to Home Depot this morning and saw the bell on my phone. I knew it was a new upload so I sat down and watched in the Home Depot parking lot. glad to see this machine running again. keep it up!
DMV? That's rough. Hope the day improves!
@@WatchWesWork I wasn't looking forward to it. In my home state of NC anything involving the DMV is an all day affair. However, here in Brooklyn I was in and out in 29 minutes (yes I timed it). I was blown away.
Very good explanations as you went through the process. It sounds like a Harley when it's revved up. Thanks, Wes.
Yep, diesel Harley!
Really interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
Great job guys runs sweet great machines never die 👍👍👌
Hey Wes, glad you got your house sold, now you'll have more time to work!
I love the sat in a field for 17 year series!
As always great video!
Oh I've been waiting for this one! Thank you for this! I'm dying to restore an old dozer!
Love the comments you posted during the montage.
That was only a small sample...
That looked like a lot of fun, I hope you and your brother do more videos together. I bet you two get into some shenanigans.
Having lived in West Allis a couple of times in my life, it's nice to see this old lump of Milwaukee steel come to life.
I actually think this machine was built in Springfield, IL. At least that is what I have been told in the comments. I'm not sure where the engine was built.
Well then I guess I have no cause to keep watching your videos. Who wants to watch boring flatlander tin? /Heavy Sarcasm
I also enjoyed listening to you and your brother goofing while working. Great stuff man.
@@glynnlane9778 Allis Chalmers was located in West Allis (named after Allis Chalmers) the industrial equipment was built in Springfield.
So you're both right
all hd5s were built in Springfield.almost 30000 were buiilt.are you selling this machine? what would it be worth?the serial number would tell you what year it is.
you can always tell a diesel mechanic by the clothes he wears
Or a farmer...
Don't forget Carpenters
The summer after high school graduation we overhauled a 60 series Detroit. After being the designated parts washer for 2 plus weeks every single article of work clothes I had at the time was black.
@@paisleyprince5280
That's why I keep coveralls in the work truck. I don't mind getting filthy (grease, oil, waist deep in a clay/sewage mixture) but I hate dirty work wear.
About 10 years ago when I was drilling oil wells. I older man I worked with, said back in his days, they would go to 2nd hand stores, to get old clothes l. Sometimes buying suits.
Image seeing Mechanic wearing a black suit to work lol.
Holy cow IT RUNS!!!
Now all it needs is...everything. Great job guys. 👍
Right. Just needs a radiator, alternator, batteries, cables, starter repairs, clutches, brakes, oil, etc.
You and your brother get along very well. Looks like you have a great team there. I spent my Saturday tearing out the engine of my Dads Cameco Cane Harvester to overhaul it. Not quite as much fun as what you had with your brother, but still up there. Great work mate 👌
Interesting. Good luck with the rebuild!
I like watching videos of people to bring the old iron back to life
I have been a two stroke diesel fan all my life and particularly like Detroit's!
Nice!!!!(can't wait for part 2)
"Percussive maintenance." Definitely adding that to my vocabulary!
Yes, very good video. Like the 'Two Brothers' concept. I say....more, more, more!
Pretty much amazing.
Pretty cool to see it run!
That’s awesome congratulations 👏
Awesome video Wes!
That thing sounds so cool with the exhaust ports wide open
Outstanding channel. Can't wait to see more on this machine. Wish i was with you to help.
was a kid. And the rear cylinder rack needs a tweak. I ran a dragline with a 3-71 that popped and smoked off one cylinder except under load when it cleaned out. Found out what injector it was and got a rebuilt one. Put it in and the hole that the setting tool fit into was ruined so no real way to set it. Started it and it still popped and smoked. Played with the rack by ear and it cleaned out and ran fine from then on.Good job U 2! GBWYall!
Great vid Wes. This is the first time I’ve seen you and your brother work together. I can imagine you two elementary schoolers tearing apart everything from your bicycles, the lawn mower, and probably your mother’s sewing machine just for curiosity’s sake. Hope to see the Detroit purring soon with a patched radiator and custom fabricated exhaust. Thank you for posting. A loyal fan down in North Carolina.
We're working on it!
That engine sounds great
Just needed a little Love !
Congrats - sounds pretty good - at least it's running - needs fine-tuned
Love your Will it Run or Will it Start videos, because you don't talk down and yet you explain what is going on if the audience might not understand. By the way, I love using a screwdriver as a pry bar!
Everyone has a sacrificial screwdriver or two.
@@WatchWesWork If they haven't I have got plenty to make up for them.
> I was gonna make a compilation of me dropping things but I thought no one would watch a 2 hour video
I'd watch it. If Michael (from vsauce) can post a 2 hour video of him saying prime numbers, a 2 hour video of dropping tools would be great
Your revolution is over. Condolences. The bums lost. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me?
Good save/rescue guys! Would definitely like to see you get the rest of her working, the radiator plugged, tracks freed, hydraulics working and see her moving and pushing dirt! Go for it!
We're getting there. Or he is.
Felicitaciones Tuvimos un 2 71 en una soldadora Lincoln Ahora que el hidrulico opere y que la trasmision funcione y tienes Allis Chalmers para toda la vida
Got to hand it to ya ,you guys have plenty of what it takes , Good Luck.
What an amazing machine she running like a champ and starts back up no issues wow @Watch Wes Work
I stumbled across you and I like a good ole boy that is still old school .. And don't worry about all those couch quaterbacks that all always harping on safety.. Hell i'd never get stuff done at the ranch or with the cows and equipment if I listen to city folk lolol.. I like seeing a good mechanic work ..
This was a treat,Two/three ? videos this week. I always look for Watch Wes work to pop up in my email. Great to see it come back to life. Congrats to your Brother. Has always I Liked,Shared. All my best to both of you.
It probably won't happen again...
I was working on my boat and listening to an audio book, I stopped all that when I got a notification that you posted a video 😁
You can't triple task?
@@WatchWesWork Gotta prioritize!
Great video, nice work.
Nice. Amazing KISS equipment.
Wes, Allis built over 29,000 HD-5s from 1946-1955 if you have a serial we can date her more exact. Amazing how simple and durable those old units were.
Congrats Wes, you have a runner. Should be a fun project to get the hydraulics working and the clutches/brakes free and working. Love old beasts like that, I would work on it just for fun. Looking forward to future videos.
Thanks for sharing.
Well it's just for fun for us too!
Sounds great, wouldnt want to work with her for too long without earmuffs though lol. Lovely bit of gear, thanks for showing us wes and bro :)
Yeah it's very loud with no exhaust, probably not much better with it.
@@WatchWesWork it well run better when you get the ex on it needs back pis to run good
Wes, when you get to 100k you ought to celebrate by making that 1-2 hour long video of just you dropping things. 🤙
