My main memory of this episode is swearing quite loudly when that Dalek shot the Doctor and somehow getting away with it despite both my parents being in the room because by this point it was accepted in our house that I was overly emotionally invested. I was about 12 at the time.
Fun fact, Wilf shooting the Dalek with the paint gun was not in the original script. Bernard Cribbins, Wilf's actor, phoned the writers up and asked for it to be added in for no other reason than he really wanted to fight a Dalek with a paintball gun.

The devastatingly serious way she played those moments always hit hard. For at least a few moments, the show isn’t that campy timespace romp it often is. It’s not that she’s just scared of some sci-fi monster, she’s existentially, immediately terrified for herself and her child.

Fun fact; the Shadow Proclamation scene was originally going to be a much larger epic call back; they had planned a massive crowd sequence in which almost every single alien creature ever to appear on the show had shown up to demand answers about the missing planets, including the Adipose, the Krilitane and the Slitheen. They were even going to have the now happily adopted child Margaret Slitheen have a brief speaking appearance (and got as far as recording her lines).
A lot had to be cut due to time and budget limits, but even so it's pretty obvious that Russel T Davies was grabbing every single continuity reference he reasonably could for this finale.

They're still declining, as far as I know. The news outlets just don't talk about it anymore. Various efforts are being made to help them flourish again, like the "bee roads" scheme here in the UK, but I've lost track of progress.

@@YourBeingParanoid [NODS] Not literally vanishing (as far as I know!), but simply not showing up in such large numbers as they used to. There are, declining numbers of bees in the UK and elsewhere... In particular, the kinds of bees that we rely on to pollenate lots of our food crops, which is bad news for our future food security.
It's relatively easy to persuade people to breed and raise honey bees, because they can make money from the honey. It's much harder to persuade people to help the many other kinds of bees, as the benefit is much less immediate. And we don't need them mass-farmed in small locations; We need them out and about in the countryside, travelling the length and breadth of the country, carrying pollen from one field to the the next and the next and the next. With more and more land old farm land and wild land being built upon, they've tended to get stuck in small islands of accessibility, with no way to get across to the next "island" (if they try, they die of hunger or exhaustion en route). The "bee roads" scheme involves planting suitable food&rest plants for them all along our country roads (and not just along the B-roads, either! =:o} ), so that they have a viable way to travel around the country using the same routes as motorists.

A good cliffhanger, reveals of the other shows connected to Doctor Who (Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures).
I love how the minute everyone hears the Dalek's they just know there is no winning.
Don't know if you heard the name of the Dalek in the destroyed case but it's Dalek Caan (the one that escaped in the Dalek's in Manhattan episode).
    Wilf: You wanna swap?
    I love him so much.
    HARRIOT JONES!
I love how you remember her because I remember being like 'wait who's this lady?' UNTIL she said her name then I'm like 'OH!'
I love how she gives up her life, goes to show that while she may not agree with The Doctor she trusts he'll save the Earth.
I love how even the Daleks know who she is XD
Davros is an old Doctor Who villian and creator of the Daleks (I think, don't quote me on that because Classic Who I know little about).
The Doctor and Rose together again!
Only to be shot in the heart (literally).

Ooh boy, there's a lot to unpack here! But first of all, good job catching that Mr. Copper reference. I've watched this episode dozens of times, but I've never picked up on it.
Now, it's important to note that Season Four was Russell T. Davies' (the man responsible for reviving Doctor Who) final season as showrunner (he'd do a series of specials in 2009/10, but this was his final full season), so he really wanted to tie his whole era together. That's why there are so many returning characters and references to other episodes. Apparently he originally wanted the Shadow Proclamation to be filled with aliens from his era, but they didn't have the budget for it. It's hard to describe just how epic this felt at the time, especially with since it crossed over with Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. This was 2008, so pre-MCU or Arrowverse, so it felt so unique.
The role Harriet Jones plays here was actually originally meant to be occupied by Donna. RTD had hoped they'd be able to get Catherine Tate back for this role, with the idea being that Donna travelled the world and set up the Subwave Network. However, when Catherine said she'd actually like to do a full season, they jumped at the chance to make her a companion. RTD considered filling her original role with a descendent of Joan from Human Nature/Family of Blood, before someone else in the production team suggested Harriet Jones. They pointed out that she needed a third appearance to give her a redemption arc.
Now, Davros. Davros is the creator of the Daleks, first appearing in the Fourth Doctor story, Genesis of the Daleks. Here, the Time Lords sent the Doctor, Sarah Jane (hence her recognition of him) and fellow companion Harry, back in time to stop the Daleks from being created. He then went on to appear on every Dalek story for the rest of the classic run.
When the Doctor says that someone tried to move the Earth before, he's referring to the Daleks' second ever appearance, The Dalek Invasion of Earth. It's a hugely popular and important story that sees the Daleks occupying Earth in the 22nd century, attempting to remove the Earth's core so they can put an engine in and pilot it around the universe. It and the Daleks' first story were both adapted into movies starring Peter Cushing as 'Dr. Who'.
This is such an epic two-parter and I'm so glad you enjoyed the first part, even if it broke you at the end. Sorry, but that regeneration is one of the moments I've been eagerly waiting for you to get to. That's only the second time that an episode has ended in the middle of a regeneration and it's the first time that it's happened in the middle of the story.
I am so psyched to see what you think of the finale Jules! Eek!

A couple of things about the episode:
Eve Miles played both Gwen and Gweneth (from the unquiet dead) they are related.
5:46 is a reference to a First Doctor serial where the Daleks tried to extract the Earth's core to turn it into a spaceship.
Mr copper was supposed to be in Harriet's place. The actor declined. Giving us more Harriet.
Stephen Moffet hated that Harriet died and asked Russel to revise her. In expanded media Russel wrote that Harriet fell through a trapdoor and rode a Moped to safety.
Russel confirmed this to be true.(Do with that with you will.)
Meet Davros: my favorite staple villain of the series.
First appearing in 1975, Sarah Jane's friend shot Davros's hand off that's why it's a metal hand.

That's the episode I was talking about some time before in terms of watching an arc from the classic era. Usually they either explain the enemies or simply introduce them anew, but for some reason with Davros they just kinda forgot about it, but at the same time not only Doctor remembers him, but Sarah Jane does too, which makes it really weird for the new viewer (for me at least). Even more so, in the new series the Doctor actually refers to Davros several times when he describes the creator of the Daleks, but never by name until this episode.
In case you want some information and you're not planning on watching "Genesis of the Daleks" from the classic era, here's a quick rundown:
It's the Fourth Doctor's era, he's wildly considered the most popular and iconic of them all, Tennant is a close second. His companion at the time is Sarah Jane Smith, the same that is in this episode, but 35 years younger, she's also considered one of the best companions of all the eras, so this is literally the golden match. The plot is that the Doctor is sent back in time by the timelords to the Dalek planet of origin, Skaro, with a mission to stop their creation before they take over the universe. There is no "Time War" in the classic era, so the Daleks are literally just the Doctor's arch-nemesis - the ultimate race of racists who want to exterminate everything that isn't a Dalek. On Skaro there's a thousand year long war going on, with nuclear strikes and chemical warfare, and there the Doctor meets Davros - a scientist without moral code (looks about like in this episode, but with his chest still intact), who's working on a new warfare machine to win in the war between the nations on the planet. Turns out that it's not exactly a machine, its a person that is very inhumanely experimented on, with evolution from the nucs and chemicals additionally sped up and twisted by Davros, turning his people into the squids we know and love and putting them into the classic metal cases. This is the first, but not the only time the Doctor meets Davros, and in most of those cases Davros is basically described even by his actors as "Hitler meets Stephen Hawking". He not only twisted the evolution of his people, but he also deliberately infused them with pure nazi fascist ideology, to turn them into controlled ruthless killers. However, by the end of the episode, while the Doctor contemplates where he can decide who's to live and who's to die, the Daleks go mad on their own and refuse to take orders from Davros, because - yeah, he's not a pure Dalek. Still, he pops up from time to time to rebuild this race when they are for some reason almost extinct.

Stay strong - we each have had to face losing "my Doctor" at some point. For me, it was 8th June 1974 - I'm over it now, mostly. The show goes on and you find new things to love, without ever losing that attachment. I love the gathering of the Doctor's allies here - I imagine the impact was slightly enhanced by me having followed both "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures", but it obviously meant something to you anyway, as I hoped.

The Run that is what sums up this episode for me, rose and the doctor running towards one another at the end.
When I watched that scene for the first time around in the spilt second of the Dalek showing up in slow-mo, I thought the Dalek was going to get rose and as rose being my joint favourite companion I was freaking out then I doubled freaked out when the doctor got hit.
Even tho it's emotionally hard that the doctor was hit and has to change ( I'm putting a positive spin on a negative bit of the story here) at least the doctor will be alright with the regenerative circle.
If the Dalek had got rose, she would have been gone, no coming back which I emotionally would have been done with this show if that had happened, but rose is good, the doctor will change and that will be emotionally hard but ready for the final episode of this series it will be an emotional rollercoaster of an episode.

That cliff hanger. And your crying *hugs* It is such a big gut punch having Rose and The Doctor reuniting only for him to be shot by a Dalek.
But yes! SUch a good episode and calling back and bringing in on the plotlines and spin off shows

Wow, WHAT A REACTION VIDEO!! Bless you Juliette you sweet girl. It's wonderful to see how much you care about these characters. It's taken me right back to when I first saw this SHOCKING cliffhanger. No one saw this coming! That's why it's best to avoid spoilers so you have no idea if and when the Doctor will change. Looking forward to the next one! :-)

I would like to point out that the Dalek which shot the Doctor is the only Dalek ever to exterminate the Doctor. Too bad it was destroyed immediately after, he would have been revered by all the other Daleks but they never even find out about it.

The luckiest Dalek in the universe… and immediately the unluckiest.

That’s Tommy Knight as Luke Smith, Luke is Sarah’s adopted son, a 13-14 boy at the time of his introduction in The Sarah Jane Adventures, if you want to get to know Luke & Mr Smith,
(the super computer voiced by comedian/game show host Alexander Armstrong,) you’ll have to check out the Sarah Jane Adventures.
Tommy was an age appropriate casting for the role of Luke over the Dawson casting that you see in movies and tv shows, (casting older teens and adults to play younger characters to skirt by child labour laws.)
