    Great reaction. I love watching modern viewers react to this movie and fully appreciate it. Some fun facts: the woman playing Marion's office co-worker at the beginning is Hitchcock's daughter Pat. Her British accent slips through at times. Hitchcock himself can be seen through the window at the start of the scene, standing out front. In the film's extended trailer, Vera Miles gets to be the one in the shower. The cop standing in the doorway as Norman receives his blanket and says "Thank you" is Ted Knight, who went on to play Ted Baxter on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." The psychatrist, Simon Oakland, would later play Karl Kolchak's boss in "The Night Stalker." John Gavin, who played Sam, would later become a U.S. ambassador to Mexico and was once considered as a replacement for Sean Connery as James Bond. The film was shot on a low budget using the same crew and facilities of Hitchcock's TV show. Since it was a black and white film, composer Bernard Herrmann decided to create a black and white musical score--that is, strings only, with no other instruments. Hitchcock originally wanted the shower scene to be without music, but when he heard what Herrmann had written for it he changed his mind. The blood in the shower was actually chocolate syrup.

    18:21 Yep. He dug her up, brought her body back to the house, hid it in the fruit cellar at first and used his taxidermy skills to preserve it. That's why "Mother" said "You hid me there once boy and you won't do it again. Not ever again."

    'I can see why it's talked about 60 whole f**king years later.' Excellent sentence. Feel it. Subscribed.
    Now watch Strangers on a Train, Vertigo, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Rebecca and Rope at least. Alfred Hitchcock was the Spielberg of his time as well as the pioneer that made Spielberg possible. Much of what Spielberg drew from, particularly at the start of his career with films like Jaws, came from Hitchcock.
    But then Hitchcock invented so much with his filmmaking and (before the age of CGI) led to creative effects and filming techniques that would come to define the industry. I'm proud that he is a fellow Brit who went to Hollywood to show them how to use suspense in film. Suspense is brilliant and is no longer used enough, something sadly lacking from most modern films that feel they have to show you everything because they can.
    Which is scarier? Showing the monster or not showing the monster? If you'd have asked Hitch he'd have said not, not sure if he was ever asked that question but I have seen enough of his interviews to know what his answer would be. Seriously the man was a bona fide genius and I have no idea why I don't see more people reacting to his films.
    (P.S. Yes I have heard that he may have been a naughty boy and I do not condone the behaviour alleged in those reports, but the man isn't here to defend himself now, is he? I admire his art, I admire his work, I don't really think of how the man was personally.)

      Most, if not all (I still haven’t seen every single one) are worthwhile. People don’t really understand how many film techniques he actually invented or made significant use of: The weird camera angles, the way he used sound (like when, in the film “The 39 Steps”, you hear a train whistle go off at the same time a woman opens her mouth to scream), the dreamlike sequences in some of his films (like “Vertigo”, “Spellbound” - which had a dream sequence created by Hitchcock and surrealist painter Salvador Dali, “The Secret Agent”), the often witty dialogue, plot devices like MacGuffins, the theme of the innocent man on the run (“The 39 Steps” again, “North By Northwest”),the use of Bernard Herman’s scores in some of his later films (including this one), the way he slowly built suspense, etc. It’s why he is one of my favorite directors of all time.

    I appreciate you keeping the movie in the major part of the screen. Too many movie reactors make themselves the biggest part of the screen. Since you like Janet Leigh, give "The Manchurian Candidate" a try. At 19:27, the policeman is standing guard and opens the door for the other officer with the blanket is actor Ted Knight, who played Judge Smails in Caddyshack.

    Vera Miles who portrayed Marion's sister was to have played the female lead in Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" a few years earlier but had an arrangment with Alfred Hitchcock that if she was pregnant she would be released from her obligation. Miss Miles's husband had been in the Armed Forces (I think Air Force) and understandably they wanted to start a family. Vera Miles did find out the was pregnant and Kim Novak took her place in the movie. Recently I saw some of the hair/makeup/lighting test photos made of Vera Miles for "Vertigo". I hadn't been aware pre-production had gone that far before the switch.
    Also at the end of "Psycho" the police officer who stands in the doorway but doesn't speak is Ted Knight who would later play Ted Baxter the news anchorman on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show".
    I had the pleasure of seeing "Psycho" in theater with mostly if not entirely college students where I took classes. There was so much screaming and yelling from the audience, especially when Lila saw Norman coming up the front steps and was going back and forth trying to figure where to go. People were screaming in the audience and yelling, "Run! Run!" Then when the chair turns and Lila sees Mrs. Bates....wow!

    You've referred several times to the prevalence of birds. Remember that scene where the detective, Arbogast is looking at the guest register and you see Norman from underneath his mouth, eating candy corn like a bird would eat seed? And also, the sound made when Marion is being stabbed sounds a lot like birds "cawing."

    @dom p is here: When you said, "Scandalous!" @2:02 - you don't know the half of it. Back in the day ( in 1960 ) movies were NOT allowed to show unmarried couples in a situation where the implication is that they are having premarital sex. So - Hitchcock was breaking taboos in the very first scene. Also - by showing Marion ( Janet Leigh ) in a state of undress - in only a bra and half slip.
    And, talking about foreshadowing ( as you mentioned in your commentary, later - about bird images, ) Marion is shown as "good" here, in the first scene [ even though she's meeting her lover, Sam ( John Gavin, ) for illicit sex in a hotel room ] by the fact that her bra and slip are white. Later, when she changes clothes at home - when she decides to steal the money, she is seen having changed into a BLACK bra and slip.
    Also - in a brilliant bit of foreshadowing of her fate, Marion's shower is clearly visible in the background as she packs to leave to go to Sam ( taking the stolen $40,000.00. )
    Also, also - another taboo breaker: this was at least one of the, if not THE, first times audiences saw a toilet being flushed in a movie.

    • @dompishere3014
      @dompishere3014  3 роки тому

      This is all so cool! Especially the foreshadowing done by showing the shower in the background because I didn't even notice that. The fun fact about the toilet I think is my favorite lol

    • @robertc.1958
      @robertc.1958 3 роки тому

      @@dompishere3014 Yes, and notice the brilliant way Hitchcock manipulates the audience. First our loyalty is to Marion ( Janet Leigh ) as we made to think that the movie is going to be about her - a woman on the run because she stole money from her employer's client, then after Marion is murdered we switch to "rooting for" Norman ( Anthony Perkins ) to get away with "cleaning up the mess made by his mother" by disposing of Marion's body and car in the swamp, then our ( the audiences' ) loyalty is forced to switch yet again when we are introduced to Lila ( Marion's sister, played by Vera Miles ) and hope that she and Sam ( John Gavin ) will solve the mystery of Marion's disappearance.
      Also - due to the restrictions I mentioned in my previous post, NO nudity was allowed in movies [ under the old The Hays Code ( later replaced by the MPAA - the Motion Picture Association of America. ) ] So Hitchcock, with the help of "Visual Consultant" Saul Bass ( who also designed the titles, ) had to storyboard in DETAIL the shower murder scene so as not to show anything ( like - show naked breasts. ) Yet, Hitchcock cleverly DID - in the part of the scene where we see Marion's in-focus hand in the foreground reachs out and grabs the shower curtain; just before she falls over, tearing the shower curtain off its hooks; you can clearly see Marion's out-of-focus breasts in the background. This almost earned 'Psycho' an X rating [ the old ratings codes were: G, PG, M ( like today's R rating, ) and X ( like today's NC-17 rating. ) ] Back then, getting an X rating was the "kiss of death" for a movie. Movie theaters would NOT show an X-rated film. Hitchcock was BARELY able to get the Certification Board to give 'Psycho' an M rating instead.

    Don't forget one other thing: Nobody really takes into account about how the movie was advertised. It wasn't advertised as a scary movie. Alls audiences knew is that they had to see it from the beginning, and there was some surprise at the END of the story. So opening day audiences THOUGHT for 45 minutes they were watching a story of a woman who stole money. By the time she stepped into the shower, the audience was probably in a ho-hum mood as nothing really happened. So imagine in 1960 you are watching this presumably slow movie when out of the blue comes this violent-for-its-time murder complete with stabbing noises and blood flowing down the tub, and to boot the supposed star of the movie is now OUT of the movie - and it wasn't even half over yet. THAT is what the big shock was - and it took audiences so off guard that they were very very jumpy for the rest of the film, especially now that the story has changed. From watching your reaction, it's nice to know the movie STILL has a hold on audiences 60 plus years later.

    After you mentioned the birds, i started looking up the symbolism in the movie and the differences about the birds is that there are two kinds. One kind is docile and the others are birds of prey are represented of Norman’s mind, him and the mother who was commanding. Hitchcock was a master of subtlety.

    Hitchcock has a few psycho-killer films - some might argue "All his killers are psycho". Yes, ROPE... STRANGERS ON A TRAIN,.. Joseph Cotton 'comes home'... FRENZY... but one of my favorites of his 'psychos' is in MARNIE, which I think has a lot of parallels to Norman Bates... a woman is 'raised wrong' and suffers childhood trauma... she runs, she flees, she changes locations to escape her traumas, unsuccessfully. MARNIE is a powerful film, almost a bookend for Norman and his leering skull-embedded closing smile.

The one thing that I found a bit off is your categorizing the first part of the movie as "slow." Back in the day, what you call slow was considered a normal, healthy pace. Today's hyperactive films with their quick cuts are frequently headache-inducing. Everybody now is so in a hurry. Sometimes it pays to stop and smell the roses.

      The crane being a bird that is predated on by other birds. And there's a huge ass bird of prey looming over/behind Perkins in his sit-down scene with Marion. He also knocks a picture of a bird off the wall after he discovers Marion's body-- which may be a subtle hint, or may be overanalysis.

    New to your channel.....interesting to hear perspective of someone watching Psycho for first time, compared to when I saw it in the early 1960s.......it's a fascinating subject (movies, Hitchcock, all of it)........many, many women were unnerved by the shower scene, having the same reaction you did.....Ed Gein is a real-life serial killer during the 1950s in Wisconsin, whose crimes spawned many books and movies like Psycho........ and for the shower scene in particular, you might want to catch a film ("78/52
    2017 ‧ Documentary ‧ 1h 31m") that goes into great detail about how that scene was shot. If you like movies, it's very educational......... in any case, a good post. Thanks for sharing.

    If you do movies from books and do original versions or older movies like this check out the Hitchcock directed 1940 best picture Rebecca (I know there was like a TV remake version recently but the original is much better and it's also based on a book). Keep up the classic stuff, for Hitchcock I'd go Read Window and Dial M for Murder for his style Psycho and The Birds were a departure/different style than most of his suspense thriller style and would also recommend a grat film Anatomy Of a Murder with James Stewart and young Lee Remick (very ahead of its time) and stand up well I think that may also be book based.

      @@dompishere3014 Another book to screen film is "Freaks" from 1932. Directed by Tod Browning, who the previous year, directed the original "Dracula" starring Bela Lugosi. It's kind of difficult to watch because the characters in the film were real side show freaks. No CGI, no special effects. It's based on a novel titled "Spurs". Fun fact: This film was banned in the United Kingdom for twenty years before receiving the go-ahead from the BBC. Worth a watch. Stay safe and be well.. Really enjoy your reviews.

    Please consider reading and watching Jane Eyre? Which Jane Eyre to watch? So many adaptations! Like 10 or so major ones. My personal favorite is the 1973 miniseries but the 1996 movie with William Hurt isn't bad for the length. 1983 is a fav but very long. Here is a quick fan vid that goes over most of the major adaptations for a quick reference. ua-cam.com/video/wBlGBfMHU70/v-deo.html

    Ugh! I absolutely despise that exposition dump scene at the end of the film when random authority figure shows up and explains the film to us, the audience. I usually skip it, it is absolutely cringe.
    Definitely give other Alfred Hitchcock films a watch, but if you’re really interested look for the book Hitchcock/Truffaut.

      I've heard this sentiment many times. It pays to leave your modern sensibilities behind when viewing movies from another era. Otherwise, you're going to find yourself in a constant state of "cringe." The Psycho coda was necessary because audiences in the late 50s knew very little about pychiatric abnormalities. Most people with them were "crazy," and that was that. You benefit from all the scientific advancements made in the 60 plus years since.

      @@dompishere3014 The word is not "moot"...you should have simply said wrong but my point was not wrong. re. the vast majority of other movie and music UA-cam reaction videos. If you had read my earlier reply carefully, you would have seen that I referred to other UA-cam reaction videos and not just UA-cam videos generally. There must be millions of those so I am sure some contain swearing but not the dozens of music and movie reaction videos I have watched (see link below to just one example of another Psycho reaction video which I note has over 96,000 views in just 4 weeks compared to yours with just over 9000 views in over a year). Even if there are a few reaction videos with swearing, that does not justify you sinking to their level when it adds nothing to the quality of your videos-just the opposite! In any event, these comment sections are not just for lovey dovey compliments but are open to any comments including critiques but maybe you have a thin skin. I was hoping you would see the light and realize that swearing in your vidoes will only narrow and not widen your audience just as happens with many people not watching modern movies full of foul language. You never see swearing in classic movies like Psycho or The Birds which is one of many reasons why TV stations like TCM-Turner Classic Movies are so popular. I was a civil litigation defence lawyer for 37 years and if any of my clients had potty mouths, I would of course remind them to not swear when in court or during pre-trial depositions. I cannot imagine that your parents would think well of your swearing in your videos or that you would countenance any child to swear. You certainly do not hear those reading the news or commenting on same on local or national TV swearing so why would you do so even assuming that it does not violate UA-cam rules? Quite apart from offending or simply turning off a lot of your potential viewers, the real point which you are missing is that such swearing detracts from and adds nothing to to your otherwise good reactions but I am now not going to look at any of your other videos given your defensive/could not care less attitude. SMH.

      @@9284vr I mean, plenty of reaction videos have swearing. Doesn’t matter which kind. I’m subscribed to plenty of channels and whether or not they swear is not a factor. You can comment whatever you want, but I can also respond 😂 this isn’t me having “thin skin”. It’s me finding it hilarious that in 2021 people are still offended about swearing on anything on the internet. Trust me, I’ve gotten actual insults in my comment section (many with swearing 😉) Quite frankly I do not care what my parents think of my language in my videos. I am in my mid 20s. Me swearing isn’t some big secret to them 😂😂 and you listed professional jobs. UA-cam is not my professional job. It is a hobby (which is also why linking something to compare myself to is dumb. I’m not that concerned about channel growth when there are other things to worry about), so while I talk a certain way at my professional job, I’ll talk as I please in my own videos. Getting this uptight that I swore in my videos is a weird hill to die on. I’m not going to I lose sleep because you won’t watch my others. As I said, if people don’t like my swearing they can watch other videos. Have fun ✌🏻
