"Production can be turned into production."
A very solid piece of advice.
Only the biggest of brains know how to turn production into production.
Ah yes the production here is made out of production
He just solved economics
We know you can turn money into money, science into science, and food into food.
Production into production makes as much sense.
I guess he means you can use a high-production city to snowball your production even further, e.g. making more Maker's Quarters
Not sure if you will read this, but I just wanted to say thank you. I know humankind won't get the kind of views and interaction that any of your civ series will, so I just want to say I'm very thankful there will be at least one overexplained series. I'll like and comment on every video I can to try and help out as much as possible. I know you won't get the return you usually do on videos, and I know you know that as well, so thanks for taking the time to do a full game series anyway.
> I know humankind won't get the kind of views and interaction that any of your civ series will
At least for right now, HUMANKIND vids are the best performing videos he's put out in months.
I don’t know if I agree. Civ being the buggy mess that it, I think people are going to flock to this game, especially since it’s free on GamePass
I stand with you stranger! This game has a lot of passion put into it, and this UA-camr I’ve just discovered is great!
@@LAZERAK47V2 That's exactly why I'm watching this video. Looking for an alternative to Civ VI
Civ: Highest difficulty is "deity".
HK: Highest difficulty is "humankind".
Beautiful. I also love the videos in Humankind, they have just enough humour to not just be annoying.^^
And "Civilization" is the 6th difficulty. 😊
I mean they arent wrong, leading an actual country is torture
@@oxoalan1 yeah lower than humankind. Coincidence I presume.

1:35 "I couldn't figure out how to change clothes" Despite the tooltip at the top saying that the clothes will evolve over time. Never change Potato :)
To be fair, I think he was talking about "styles". Like, if you dress as nobility, as a warrior/knight, civilian/peasant, etc
I think it's a good idea for the devs to implement.
@@PrismariLaura But why? You dress as a warrior when you pick a warrior culture. You dress as nobility when you pick asthete or whatever. Always according to the culture. And dressing as peasant doesn't really make sense for the leader does it?
@@Crowbar sure, there's a cultural aspect to it, but just like how the AI can be peaceful or aggressive regardless of their current culture, so too can your clothes be militaristic or bourgeois regardless.
Also, I'm fairly sure Ghandi wore like, whatever. Not all leaders wore exclusively noble clothing.
@@PrismariLaura Ghandi was the leader of a movement though, not of a country/nation
To be fair tho, it seems like you can't change clothes during the avatar editor itself to see what your character looks like in each age? Which might matter to some people
Coming from the civilisation franchise there are so many nice improvements that humankind brings to the table, that I really appreciate.
can't wait for part II.
Alreay so many little things I learned here:
1. backstab bonus
2. Disband into population
3. Pillaging in Neolithik
4. Legacy traits
...
the civic bonus that you get pop from burning stuff down is super fun
Seriously! I have so much to learn. Can't wait to watch all of the let's play vids!
@@MrVentches you are literally taking slaves from their villages when you do that 💀, I love ransacking then using that pop to speed up construction, its funny cuz you are literally taking slaves and working them to death....but its so lowkey tho 🤣
@@elvis4868Yeah and when you research masonry you get forced labor and you can sacrifice your pop to speed up building 💀
fame isn't "one of the ways" to win, it's THE ONLY way to win. There are no win conditions in the game. There are conditions that "end the game," but even if you're the one that causes it, that doesn't mean you're the one that's going to win. In the majority of cases you will, but it's technically not the same.
There are wincons tho, going to mars, discovering the final techs, and domination are ways to win without fame, no?
@@gamingspartan2 nope. All of those things end the game, but they won't necessarily mean you win.
The Civ equivalent of the fame win condition is Civ's score win condition. Everything major you do in Civ garners some score in just the same way that everything major in Humankind garners fame. Humankind simply makes fame take precedence at all times to domination, science, etc.
@@ChristAliveForevermorestfu i don't care people like you more on social media i landed on mars

Hoping you have a great time with it!
Yea it finally got to the Pirate Bay few days ago I’m downloading it now…i miss when you could rent games and didn’t have to spend 60$ to find out if u like it or not
I love the attention to detail in the terrain of this game the art is gorgeous, I like the fact that you start as a hunter-gatherer Society and that you can customize your avatar and civilization colors and emblem but I find the combat mechanics to be a bit too complex for my taste and the fact that you have a set turn limit for victory and there is only one victory condition. I think that they should have a scientific Victory like Civilization 6. They should also have the ability to select opponents where they are random and you don't know who you're going to encounter as a competing civilization
@@biggee316 you can also beat the game by obtaining all the last era technologies. Even if before the endturn. I believe you can also win by earning all era stars in the final era.
42:16 I don't know why I find this so funny, but the guy just collapsing and dying because the average health was reduced after 1 unit separating out made me actually laugh
Thanks for pointing that out. I totally missed that. lel :D
When I saw that, I squintedy eyes and said WTH just happened to that man.

“Terra Rossa”: Italian for “red soil,” and usually exist above limestone & dolomite bedrock. Those two rock types (+gypsum) are incredibly prone to internal weathering creating cave systems (wether or not it’s large enough for a human to explore varies). Due to underground open spaces giving Terra Rossa unique drainage characteristics, it is an incredibly popular spot to grow wine (gotta say that all this is irl, just in case)
…huh. Fascinating. I wonder, if you can choose to grow stuff like that, would those terrains in game be ideal? That would be neat attention to detail.
How do you know this? Is this a random fact you read one day and now you were all like: “This is my time to shine!” Or do you work with this stuff?
I am not ashamed to say I had no clue about any of this!
Edit: I’m just legitimately curious on how you know this, I’m not questioning it or anything!

Awesome video! Thanks for doing this. Now I can just watch your video instead of being confused for the first 20 hours playing the game.
Will you be making content on this game? Or sticking with Civ?
Im just happy "yoinkarino" has continued its lingo legacy into this game
Im relatively new to games like this, Ive played Civ Rev on console and iPhone and Civ 6 on console too. But Ive sold my consoles since then and am moving towards PC, this over explanation is perfect for noobs like me. Theres not a detail missed and sometimes when a game has so much depth it can be slightly overwhelming, but exciting when I understand what it all means and how to navigate it. Your content is great and I appreciate the hell out of it. Thanks man.
8:20 Didn't expect to hear a Stormlight reference here.
I just started playing and I’m overwhelmed, I can’t lie. Yet I’m still intrigued enough to keep playing. This video does help tho.
Practice makes perfect, take your time, read what each culture gives you, and know that it's okay to transcend a culture sometimes (I'd say usually when you're ahead). I am loving it, but unfortunately havent got the time for it atm, definitely a lot better than CIV 6 by leaps and bounds save for the Diplomacy, I'm also pretty lost there.
Civ 6 is a bit overwhelming at the beginning too, that could keep some people away, but people like us get intrigued (im asuming that we like potatomcwhiskey and his civ 6 videos)
A quote from ssethtzeentach about endless space 2 (another game made by amplitude) fits really well for humankind.
"This game gives you freedom. The freedom to fuck up and suffer the consequences"
I earned an achievement, "Neanderthal, Lose all your armies during the Neolithic Era" in 5 turns....
4X games when people are first learning them, and even switching from game to game is pretty hard. I never went through the first hard phase of learning 4X myself because I started playing Civ Revolution (badly) when I was a child, so when I started to go into 4X more seriously I already had the base knowledge, but even then switching from Civ to Humankind or any other 4X is really hard.
A little knitpicky and I don't know what they would do to change it this late in the game, but I kind of wish that food tiles didn't automatically turn into farms or what look like farms. I understand it's to help distinguish tiles, but I wish that didn't happen right away in the Neolithic Era with tribal outposts and that it only arrived once you developed agriculture.
There could be an intermediate stage of “managed forests/grasslands.” The lands around migratory and pre-agricultural peoples looked pretty different from both truly wild lands and true farms.
@@ZeteticPhilosopher I'd wager that they will do that in an art update - the team behind Humankind tend to give their games a lot of tender loving care even after release. They are still putting out small DLCs for Endless Legends, a game that is seven years old.
@@stewartgames6697 Also an easy spot for someone to mod it in, depending on how the modding works with this, if at all xD
The thing that distinguishes the Neolithic from the Paleolithic is that we started farming for the first time. When you move into the Ancient era in game, you're not discovering farming, you're running a proper city for the first time. Hope that helps.
@@Catsley Maybe, but "started farming for the first time" isn't black and white. Sedentary farming is pretty different from migratory farming, and the intensive sedentary farming needed to support actual cities is very different from the mildly managed forests and croplands that supported small populations in places like pre-contact Australia or the fertile crescent 10,000 years ago.
My point is that it's a little weird to go to a Bronze age-style plantation right after forming a sedentary settlement for the first time.
thanks for posting this when you did so I can watch it while the game downloads
“You can also use gold to purchase things.” Oh my fault Potato, I thought I used gold to research technologies.
Thanks for this. As a Civ veteran, some things that seem intuitive and familiar in fact work completely different than how I thought. This really helped
That Egyptian clothing is called a shendyt. It is essentially a linen kilt.
I loved this. You explained all the nuances of the game really well, during the first 20 minutes I went from, 'eh i guess I'll watch this, I'm not gonna buy it though' to 'holy shit this looks awesome I wanna play this so bad!'
This was a great video. I love when gamers dont take for granted that everybody knows certain mechanics in a certain type of game. I´m relatively new to 4x games so I really appreciate it. I´m definitely gonna try this game. It looks amazing
I absolutely loved the game. I've been a huge fan of the Civilization series since the first one came out and I feel like Humankind came to revamp the genre. I still love Civilization but Humankind definitely lives up to it. And I'm glad you decided to create a little video guide series.
39:15 Hey! You know what? You're making okay decisions.
Another classic Potato McWhiskey overexplained video. This game looks so good though!
Unfortunately my PC is not powerful enough to play this one, but I can’t wait to watch this whole series
So I’m guessing if it won’t run on a pc it’s got no chance on a steam deck when it’s released later this year?

Just a fun fact: Terra Rossa is rich in clay and is responsible for the "discovery" of pottery, wich is in itself related to communication and cultural revolutions, hence the science bonus! Amazing content, this game is looking pretty fun!
I have the same experience of watching UA-camrs that I like who barely know how to play a game that I know very well and it is frustrating. These tutorials are super helpful and you do a great job. Thank you
1:50 this is now what I see when I picture Saol
I'll be watching this a few times to discover where I've gone wrong in my first 2 hours of the game.
As a new player of the game, but with a few strategy titles on my shelf, I went for the second option of have played strategy before.
Didn't see a single mammoth until I had chosen my first culture.
But I also almost lost a damaged Neolithic hunter to a deer, saved it thanks to this video and the defense choice.
Thank you PotatoMcWiskey, looking forward to seeing the next episode!
Soo happy to see you give this game the long examination it deserves. Looking forward to the forthcoming episodes of this series. BTW, I really loved Old World and hope those videos performed well. I would love to see you do more on that game as well as more Humankind to join your Civ 6 fare. Love ya!
I love that you have to find and earn your ability to start your first settlement
Loved the stormlight reference! Life before death radiant!
Zhou Dynasty was the 2nd known dynasties (or 3rd if you count the mystic Xia Dynasty) of China. And one of the longest. Although for the 2nd half of the Zhou Dynasty the central government lost control of the majority of the territories to the regional Kings. Until Qin Shi Huang united the empire and ended the Zhou.
Another great tutorial, Potato never dissapoints
Public service announcement: The game is available in the Xbox Game Pass for PC
Really like that point you made about learning mechanics in depth- that in depth comprehension and articulation is exactly why I love your channel!
Hey there!
I can really relate to that little "Why you became a UA-camr rant"
Nothing is more frustrating for me then a content creator having no freaking clue what they are doing in the game.
While it can be entertaining for a little bit, that quickly fades away imo.
Keep up the really high quality gameplay Potato.
Why does a few of my current and former UA-cam subscriptions fit so elegant into this category?
I love how the intro the like choose map size shows the size of the planet then the random one is a dice
Im just picturing the random Option spawning you on a Giant dice
This was awesome, and I appreciate the care you took in walking us through every step of the beginning
I would follow the ginger bearded warrior lady to the gates of Mordor.
Stormlight Achieve reference was dope
Thank you for going through the game slowly and taking the time to explain so many of the details of the game mechanics, it really helps.
This is a relatively complex game, and you broke down the major ideals with absolute clarity. Thank you!
I love your content fellow potato man
I can’t Wait to see more just of anything honestly so I can vicariously enjoy the game through you until I can fix my pc
Don't apologize for explaining the game instead of playing - It's extremely helpful to someone whos new to 4x and trying to get in for the first time. I've given up on trying to learn Stellaris just yesterday because there were no good ways to learn it. This is a *fantastic* guide for new players.
edit: I really appreciate how the game turns the combat area map into a simplified terrain highlight. Removes the clutter making it easier to focus on units and positions
Yay. Will be interesting to see what the release is like and if the balance issues are sorted.
I started playing this game a few weeks ago, had no idea what I was doing then watched your videos and I feel like a pro! Thank you!!
you are the best person I have watched when it comes to actually explaining the mechanics of a game. Thank you. Ill be downloading this come later.
I'm so happy civ has two new competitors with humankind and old world pushing the genre forward and force advancement.
Amazing guide! Extremely helpful and easy to understand in-depth mechanics for a noob "Civ" player like myself just getting into Humankind. Thank you very much!
I played hundreds of hours of all the Civs and Endless Legend, and 5 hours of my first Humankind game, and I learned some good stuff from this video
Them sponsoring you paid off, as I totally just bought the early access bonus edition solely because of your 2 series videos! And now I’m watching them again because my first game I’m stinking up the place. Thanks again!
You're a Legend for this Guides. Around since Civ 6 and helped me out a lot. Thx for all your hard work to make all this great Videos

Oh, thanks for this video! I learned a few small things that I missed through my first playthrough that were very good things to discover. I've been playing Civ for....forever. Humankind is definitely a little different than the approach I'm used to taking.
Finally a great in depth tutorial, thank you very much !
Thank you, Potato! Your explanatory videos are so helpful. Made me a better Civ player and will no doubt be the same for Humankind!
Thanks for taking the time Potato. Really appreciate the explanations.

I wasn't sure if I was going to get this. Potato dropping A Stormlight reference (despite having no real bearing on gameplay) just made my mind up.

Thank you for this phantastic video, a very engaging explanation of this game.
The two things I most love about Humankind-conceptually-are the fact that your Civilization Choice is delayed until multiple turns into the game, and the fact that your culture evolves over the ages as your identity changes. I also like that they seem to have adopted a Civics approach very similar to the one in Civilization IV, but a tile working system most like Civilization VI ;).
More of these nutz, HE HE HE HE lol got me rollin'
I'm excited to eventually play this! Also, seeing all the cool new mechanics in this game make me excited for the things that could end up in Endless Legend 2.
Brilliant stuff. Had so many questions, and now I have other questions. Spud out
oh god I need to see the anakin meme with a deer as obi wan
"I like the idea of having some ginger haired warrior lady." Same brother
I really appreciate all the effort that means making videos like this. Mankind isn’t the most popular game of the moment and I’m pretty sure that you’re not going to get a lot of views or likes, but, even with that, you did this video! That talk a lot about you. Thank you!
I think i'll be downloading this tonight - looks good.
Well, I downloaded it - game is great but I’m not. Keep making Humankind videos please or I’m screwed 😂
A great vid to help me dip my toes into the pool of Humankind. Thank you!
When fighting a mammoth, don't attack the first 2 turns. You'll take way less damage if you let the mammoth slowly kill itself. Then strike with both units turn 3
Fine, well explained and showing a lot of mechanics! :)
Your avatar... He's so beautiful.
Just a little clarification: The Egyptian bonus add 1 production to every tile that ALREADY HAS production
a single tribesman can kill a mammoth if you have high ground or it attacks from a river, and you just stand and defend letting it kill itself on you.
also defend is +2 combat strength...
Yes but new players are dumb.
Amazing video, thanks a lot for the detailed explanations
I've never been able to finish one of potato's humankind videos before bc they were always too overwhelming but this is really easy and enjoyable to follow! also, im gay for warrior princess avatar
I love your approach to doing playthroughs! I learned a lot watching you play Civ and I guess it'll be the same for Humankind once I go for buying the game ^^
