I couldn't believe you found that race! I remember seeing that live and couldn't believe my eyes. F1 should be that good. 😊
I find it funny how these guy did the chicane better in the wet then in 2021 in the dry 😂
Love your videos man! Newer to indycar and love going back in time with your videos to help me understand what has happened!
Thank you very much. I'm glad you got into IndyCar. American open wheel racing has a lot of history and I'm doing my best to bring the best and sometimes worst moments back to the forefront.
That finish was awesome. Thank you for sharing these classic races.
Thanks for this video. When it started it reminded me of the race Mark Blundell won on the last lap and was going to request you did that one and to my surprise it was actually this one. I thought it was at Mid-Ohio. I remembered seeing this one live and thought it was an amazing way to win... and to only lead the race for a few inches (or did he lead the race at any other time?)
My pleasure, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Mark ran second behind his teammate Mauricio Gugelmin and third when Zanardi took the lead for most of the race. He got credit for leading 1 lap earlier on a pit cycle, but other than that, the last lap was the only one he led.
Always good to see a Mark Blundell win. Had such a great year in 97
He had an awesome season. Shame the success didn't really continue past 97.
@Demise90Racing yeah would have been good if moved on from PacWest Racing. At least he got a 2nd place a le mans
Great video Demise. I actually attended this race (I was 2 years old at the time & spent most of the race being preoccupied with the hot chocolate & hot dog that my dad bought me instead of watching the on track action lol). This was a great recap of what I missed during the race. I also attended the 2000 race at Portland along with the 2004 & 2005 races. I haven't been back to PIR for Indycar since they returned in 2018 though I am attending this weekend's race (I have been to PIR for both the NASCAR Xfinity Series & Formula E this past year). Lastly since you have covered this race, you should also do a review in the future of the first time NASCAR went to PIR back in 1999 when the Truck Series raced there as that was a very exciting race as well.
What a wild race from beginning to end Portland is unpredictable
Portland overall is an underrated track. Some real classics there for sure!
Best IndyCar finish imo. And best exemplified by the EuroSport call of the finish imo.
Amazing presentation.
Wet races are the most difficult ones for the teams...is like gambling.
Thank you!! I agree with you on that. Gambling suma it up for sure. Especially on a drying track.
I always thought De Ferran was out of fuel on the straigth, didn't know he was on different tyre. Great video as always man!
Fabulous video. As always !!
that finish was well worth the watch
If you're curious (and this is coming form a local), its a rainy week so this weekend's Portland GP could be a wet one at some point.
I swear the whole Eurosport version used to be up on YT but I can't, for the life of me find it, only the SPN version...
Anyone got a clue where to find it? Also it makes me laugh Mark won 3/4 of the Marlboro Million program, if only he'd won Homestead he'd have taken that. Hopefully, you do the other two wins if you ain't already, I forget if you covered Toronto or Fontana 97, which was just as nuts from start to finish and Zanardi talks about in his book. Somehow I seem to remeber something about Toronto 97 on here but not 100% sure
I'm not sure about the Eurosport version, i only found the ESPN version. I'm sure I will visit some of those races at some point. I've done Toronto 2001 on the Channel, but you are probably thinking of Vancouver 1997 which I have done on the channel.
The main difference between F1 and IndyCar? IndyCar doesn't need rain for a great race. But when it does get wet, it just gets plain wild.
was there an interesting story in the race in detroit they were talking about where blundell nearly won? if so, that might be worth making a video about - unless you have already and I forgot.
I don't think there was a single bad livery in that 97 CART field at all, was there?
I mean even the backmarker teams had great paint jobs, Hogan, Ribeiro, Mier, dannr et al, they all had great paint schemes on slow cars, and then you had the front of the pack with absolutely amazing schemes
Great race! Its on UA-cam
If people enjoy these, I highly recommend checking out the full race after.
@@Demise90Racing I always thought this was one of Danny Sullivan's best races as a commentator, he was very engaged in this broadcast
2:15 what does that flag mean with the red plus sign on it?
I’ve stated this before but I absolutely love your videos! Would LOVE if you’d check these races out & consider doing videos on them as well
Detroit 97
IRL Dover (both years)
IRL Texas 01
San Antonio 13
Indy 92
1989 CART Season (Mears vs Andretti)
I really appreciate that!!! You will definitely see some of these in the future!
Another W 🏆funny thing is my last name (married) is Blundell. Lol. No relation to Mark
Thank you!! No way, that's pretty cool though. Nothing wrong at all sharing the same last name as a race car driver haha
With such a dramatic finish I'd kinda forgotten how wild the rest of the race was 😄
But I was so happy for Blundell, as they said on commentary he'd been leading at Belle Isle only to run out of fuel -at the death- a couple of corners before the end of the last lap.
[edited for @sdsmt99]
Overall the race was pretty wild. It was a turning point for Blundell's season to get this W.
I remember watching this race live. I remember at the end I jumped off my couch.
I could imagine. Crazy finish!
