    I watched this episode last night and I was so surprised about this punishment, I had to see if other people agreed. Clearly, I'm not alone in thinking so. Despite the fact that it wasn't typical solitary confinement (the cell was transparent, and he was allowed to read), I still believe that was pretty bad. Paris had absolutely no privacy, was watched by guards at all times, unable to have nonessential conversations, and fed trash meals. He wasn't even allowed to make a personal letter to his father in peace. The writers made a pretty bad choice in this episode and it could've been remedied by just having Paris be confined to quarters instead, which was consistent to the rest of the series. But hey, maybe Paris trying to save an entire planet is worse than Suder killing someone for fun.

    Well, he has to eat Neelix’s cooking three times a day for 30 days with no replicator rations. I call that cruel and unusual.

      I'd rather take life in solitary than take one bite of Neelix's cooking

    In retrospect I would have preferred for Paris to remove his other rank pip and hand it to Janeway.
    "If we're going to do this, Captain, let's at least do it properly. I'm done being one of your drones. When my 30 days are up, we'll need to sort out my status aboard Voyager as a newly minted Federation civilian. In the meantime, my new accommodations await."

    To be fair Sooter committed his crime when Janeway was still more Starfleet in her mindset. These hilarious Psycho Janeway videos aside, Janeway's character does become less idealistic and more aggressive as the series progresses and this reflects that.

      But even then Janway’s punishment for him was asinine. Being locked in his quarters, able to use resources with out being able to offer any contributions to the ship. Is nuts. If hi is such a threat and you wanted to humanly keep him around for trial if you got home. Then putting him in stasis and store him in the cargo bay. Then offer his quarters to a crewman on the rise to LT. problem solved.

    Wasn't Paris promoted back to Lieutenant before they got back to Earth while poor Harry Kim was kept as an Ensign

      As other people have pointed out he met Nog who was a waiter at the time in the pilot who would later join Starfleet and get a field promotion. If he met Nog again after the finale Harry would have to call the guy who served him drinks SIR.

    To be fair, Paris' "solitary confinement" in this episode wasn't really very solitary; he had frequent visitors, his cell was very nice and not lit 24-7 like some real world solitary confinement cells, and he was allowed to read novels and write letters. This is a 24th century enlightened version of solitary confinement.

      But two of the people who visited him where Neelix (professionall shitthead) and Harry if thats no torture then what do you want, waterboarding?

      I think sf debris mentioned it, Suder just killed one crew member, paris disobeyed janeway thats treason.

    • @SamanthaIreneYTube

      Right, but I think those visits were people sneaking in.

      His visitor was Neelix. That was a brutal punishment.

      @@marckrieger3277 I don not know if you are being sarcastic or not. But that is not treason (maybe to psycho Janeway). His crime is insubordination and that is a nothing crime on Star Trek. Janeway is really off her nut.

    Solitary confinement was banned as a punishment about when they deemed it illegal to tie shirtless men to wooden gratings/bend pantsless boys over cannons and basically flog the ever-living crap out of them. Says something, doesn't it?

    • @hisoj
      @hisoj  Рік тому +1

      janeway is old school
      then again he did have visitors so I mean tecnically thats like federation style solitary confinement

    • @oddish4352
      @oddish4352 Рік тому +1

      @@hisoj The inconsistency could have been eliminated by simply having Janeway say "I reduce you to the rank of ensign and sentence you to 30 days confinement in the brig." Neelix still brings him his meals, the doc evaluates him periodically, and Harry gets a few visits... really, the episode doesn't change that much.

      Voyager is what happens when you take a proven franchise, great actors, and a novel premise... and turn it over to showrunners who don't even know that an ensign is supposed to make lieutenant.

      @@hisoj for *some* reason, I just envisioned that scene from Rocky IV where he climbs the mountain, but replaced the music with cheesy native american style music and instead of Rocky screaming "Drago!" it Chakotay screaming "BRAGA!!!"

      Dont forget the most dynamic tv producing team in history - Berman and Taylor. Without their *cough choke backup sound* ... guidance... and keen demands, Voyager never could have reached the heights it reached.

      Anyone who destroys a random ensign's Starfleet career just for a giggle is definitely missing a couple of marbles.
