I saw Her after diabetes took her leg and she was still hot. Free concert in the park in Pittsburgh and she tore it up. Amazing artist I absolutely love her. Makes me glad I am black!
This video is so funny. She had such a radiant presence! It's hard to even imagine any of the challenges she might have faced, or the way things were for women back then. It's like she broke through all the barriers with a smile. That voice. That light.
Ella is seriously amazing. Her understanding of music, the changes in the piece, and how to improvise and scat through them are just overwhelming. Truly a legend. Mainstream America doesn't have the patience to sit through - thinking - this music. All the average white bread (plain/boring/simple - not a racial reference, to be sure) American wants is square background music. No one wants to have to think anymore. This music requires thinking and focus. Well worth the effort, of course.
LOL! Love how towards the end she's like, "Hope that I am still in tune". I'm sure she was being serious, but it just goes to show you that she must've had a good sense of humor. I love her music.
This is why Ella is one of a kind!! God has blessed us with some greats (Ella, Frank, Sammy, Peggy, etc.) No other like Ella - nor will ever be. Happy Birthday Ella, pray you are in Heaven - resting!! Thanks for posting this treasure!!
Greatest female vocalist of all time--she could sing anything and sing it to perfection!! I cringe whenever I hear singers that try to mimic her style (e.g. Dee Dee Bridgewater). Nobody can duplicate her style and it shouldn't even be attempted!!
Kayla Geyer great new perspective. Indeed, someone better may come along. But particularly in terms of scatting and improvisation, so far there may still be no one else like Ella.
If you go to jazz festivals, you can still find some singers like this. But yes, they are rare. I once heard a guy improvise and sing as high as her, it was incredible! Unfortunately, this music is not mainstream anymore. We have to live with it
She's pure genius and queen of Jazz. She's also my biggest inspiration and anyone who dislike this video is just dumb for me. Her life was hard enough and i bet the haters don't even bother to know it. My stand is that i just love her :)
She messed up on the words! She just kept singing. Starting at 1:09 for a few seconds she openly admits she forgot the lyrics. She continues the song still and rocks it like a champ. She's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On August 15th, 1960 Ella Fitzgerald's "How High The Moon" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it would peak at #76 and spent 5 weeks in the Top 100. The most successful version of this song was by Les Paul and Mary Ford; in 1951 it reached No.1 {for 9 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers chart and No. 1 {for 9 weeks} on Most Played by Jockeys chart, and finally No. 1 {for 9 weeks} on Most Played in Jukeboxes chart.. Was ranked No. 3 on Billboard's Year-End Top 30 Singles of 1951 chart.
the main problem you, the ignorant listener and some stupid musicians is that you guys never consider your poor skills and always give a shit to every good thing that you're enjoying. We're living in the world where at least can listen any kind of music freely via youtube. Money do not decide any taste of public. The great music always survive and goes on and on.
comparing her to Om Kalsoum and in this concert she is with scarf and musicians who are enraptured with her, I want you to notice the drummer and pianist and then when you see the nay and kanun player of Om Kalsoum, see how they are enraptured with her singing my best enjoy this moreen MARRURRA
So right about the never heard an off key note -- EXCEPT when would intentionally and with great finesse hit the note on "KEY" in the song "You Can't Take That Away From Me" the lyric "...the way you sing off KEY, the memory of all that, no, no you can't take that away from me" -- and even then it was a beautiful off key note
she plays with the notes like a child. I´ve seen other big singers messing this song up (just type the name of this song here and compare). She doesn´t - she has the command of this song.
Whatever happened to the complete version? This Song is about 7 minutes long but I can't find it anywhere?!?! All I found was this 4 minute video which is incomplete...help!!!
Only Billy Holliday coud comper with Ella. But no.This is not good compare. When I listen Ella I pray - oh Ella don't break your thoung. But Billi was different
@jonas220393 I do believe it is a quote from the finale of the William Tell Overture (Giachino Rossini) or better known as part of the "Lone Ranger" theme.
The most incredible thing about this performance is that it's all improvised. The musicians follow her and just go with the flow. You have to be really good to keep up with the singer and come in just when she needs you.
Ella Fitzgerald, vocally masterful! Seamless! But in my opinion, although she wasn't the creator of this style called "scattin". But it comes out of her just as if she were breathing! Im a musician, and it is very difficult to deliver to the audience the way Louis would drop a line.. Effortlessly as she did, and ALWAYS IN PITCH!!! And she never sang the same riff over, she would improvise and create new ways to make the audience, that are in the "know", feel special. Like it was the first time they heard it, again! It seems like she has conversations with the instrument itself rather than the guy with the fella thats trynna keep up with Ella! She still lives in this world today.. Afforded by the graces of mans creativite and progressive nature. I can listen to her over and over, and i hear new things. Like i missed that tiny lilt or i missed a phrase that made the slightest tingle down my spine.. She never ceases to keep me wanting more.. Anyone know of or have in their possession, footage or music that was never released and are able to share, i would be interested in maybe a purchase.. remember music is medicine for the soul
What Ella is trying to do here is repeating the way she did How High the Moon in 1947 where she forgot the lyrics and scatted and improvise the whole song to the end. Much, much longer than this one. That song of her became legedary. In 1960 she did it once more. In this footage she sings a line of the Beatles "it's been a Heart Days Night" and that's from the sixties.
I was mistaken in thinking How High The Moon was included on the Stockholm Lp/CD. However, the version here IS from the same TV show that most of the other tracks were taken from for the LP, which I have on videotape (hence why I thought HHTM was on the audio CD too). Duke and the band are on for the first half of the show with Ella coming on for Wives And Lovers, Sweet Georgia Brown, So Danca Samba, High The Moon, IMagine Mr Frustration (my favourite Ella performance) and Duke's Place.
yah i have that video....How High The Moon was never part of the CD though...... I know this is from the same session as the Stockholm CD, just was never added to it. I would love to see footage of the radio performance OR the rest of the radio perfomrance.
Shane sadly I think the version they used for How High The Moon on the CD was from the 1960 Berlin Concert. This is still very much unissued. There is another version from Brussels 1966 where the version is similar to this. The 1966 Stockholm for the original LP and then CD release is from the TV special and a radio performance around the same time (i.e Cottontail )
This is from a concert in Stockholm in 1966 with the Ellington band (I've never been sure if it's the exact same one that's on CD as The Stockholm Concert, but the repertoire is the same, if only in a different order).
@dperkins1911 you are so right.....we don't have anyone like this, anyone....i mean, we do have great singers (a few, specially in popular music) but no one will ever compare to Ella. I mean, even back in her time, a lot of singers could only hope to sing like this......she was so unique....long live ella!!!
Argh! Why did it cut off - OMG. I have a recording where she slots in Smoke Get's in Your Eyes but not Hard Day's Night!!! Noone will ever reach her skill or style
@xtremenortherner we didn't have her for a time....we have her know and will have her forever...there is no other like ella fitzgerald, she is simply the best....to meet her music is a gift of God, she is that good!!!
The audio is waaay out of time with the video. I thought I saw Cat Anderson on trumpet briefly... I know she did some stuff with Duke's band with her piano player... Fantastic clip! The woman was absolutely brilliant.
I saw Her after diabetes took her leg and she was still hot. Free concert in the park in Pittsburgh and she tore it up. Amazing artist I absolutely love her. Makes me glad I am black!
LOL Me too. We are amazing, aren't we!!
This video is so funny. She had such a radiant presence! It's hard to even imagine any of the challenges she might have faced, or the way things were for women back then. It's like she broke through all the barriers with a smile. That voice. That light.
Satchmo was the same. Never saw him without a radiant smile of pure joy.
Ella is seriously amazing. Her understanding of music, the changes in the piece, and how to improvise and scat through them are just overwhelming. Truly a legend. Mainstream America doesn't have the patience to sit through - thinking - this music. Pure and simple genius. Yes such a thing exists. You just witnessed it.
Ella is the queen of scat. I love it!
pure magic, my heart and ear feels ever note, beat, rhythm. I get it Ella, only real ears can.
4:09 shpongle actually sampled this part in "my head feels like a frisbee"
Mind blown, love shpongle
LOL! Love how towards the end she's like, "Hope that I am still in tune". I'm sure she was being serious, but it just goes to show you that she must've had a good sense of humor. I love her music.
My head feels like a frisbee!
She's a legend.

This is why Ella is one of a kind!! God has blessed us with some greats (Ella, Frank, Sammy, Peggy, etc.) No other like Ella - nor will ever be. Happy Birthday Ella, pray you are in Heaven - resting!! Thanks for posting this treasure!!

Kayla Geyer great new perspective. Indeed, someone better may come along. But particularly in terms of scatting and improvisation, so far there may still be no one else like Ella.
Patti Austin did an incredible tribute to her... It was very impressive... I agree with you tho
This one's from "The Stockholm Concert, 1966," one of the best songs on the album.
Diocane it's actually molto gud devo dire. æstetiks🤞
Her timing just blows my mind!
Right! Her ear is AMAZING!!
Many people are just too dumb to get the beauty of it.
This woman was a beast! Even the piano player @ 4:05 was like, "I'm watching this shit and I still don't believe it!"
scat like nobody. she samples 'o nosso armor' by vinicius and jobim. AND ITS AMAZING.
"Hi - hi - high is the moon, and I hope I'm still in tune!!!"
If you go to jazz festivals, you can still find some singers like this. But yes, they are rare. I once heard a guy improvise and sing as high as her, it was incredible!
Unfortunately, this music is not mainstream anymore. We have to live with it
24 deaf people disliked this video.
John Doman 29 now.. they aren't deaf! They lack vision imagination and heart! But its ok.. their ears dont deserve the healing touch of her voice
She's pure genius and queen of Jazz. She's also my biggest inspiration and anyone who dislike this video is just dumb for me. Her life was hard enough and i bet the haters don't even bother to know it.
My stand is that i just love her :)
They just don't understand..... *^_^* She is so freaking Amazing!!!
Brilliant! And the ending cuts off?!!!! Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!!!!
Hello 👋 m
How are you doing today
Thanks for posting! Its my favorite track of all times.
She messed up on the words! She just kept singing. Starting at 1:09 for a few seconds she openly admits she forgot the lyrics. She continues the song still and rocks it like a champ. She's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Conner Scout, Ella is Freaking Amazing!!!!
Love the way she uses her voice as a real instrument!!
This is closer but still mote jazzy than she had performed it on the record. Thanks for helping me find it.
24 ppl need a head examination...
Alas! There are 40 of them.
Many people are just too dumb to get the beauty of it.
Ella Fitzgerald always was and always will be my number one favorite jazz singer.
This is the best performance I've ever heard. wow...
I love the way she addresses the audience and imitates instrument sounds. :) This lady is amazing. Hey . . . Why'd it stop??
Ella Fitzgerald could interpolate ANY song into this one and make it hers.
Great improvisation- that's what makes a blissful star in the sky. Happy B, Ella girl! :)
This woman is a beast! In a league of her own. . .What would I give to experience a live concert with the great Ella? That's entertainment!!!
Saben por qué estoy aquí? Porque acabo de escuchar a esta maravilla de voz!!
her scat is amazing
Her improve is impeccable... simply amazing performance!
The guys face at 4:05 says it all!!! Playing drums along to this made me smile so much. The energy Ella exerts is magical.
Amazingly this performance stands up like a champion full of of life and gusto! Wow!
Maravillosa por siempre.

"o nosso amor va ser assim"!!
Hoppy Birthday Queen Ella Fitzgerald! This lady was a musical instrument created only by musical gods
my daughter will be called Ella

Ella liked the Beatles?
totally
Come on man fix your video please! The speed is off!!
Thanks! Do the LADY Justice! :-) SOMEONE WITH A GEM of this song please POST.
Thanks!
@tojugula I say about Nobel Prize in science, not Nobel Peace Prize. Nightingale sings beautifully, but he is not clever.
Does anyone know when this particular recording was??
Y’all love this but hate on Migos and Future lmao, this is terrible
This woman was pure magic - you dont get talent like this in any college, this is spiritual stuff.
I love the part when she starts "a hard day's night", too bad it's cut here...
does anyone here have the full version?
Can someone point me to the complete video? I thought it was around 7 minutes of her singing, not these 4 minutes.
She absolutely killed this (thats a good thing...).
Great great performance!!
The title of this song is “How High The Moon”- not How High Is The Moon!!
Wow... I love her.
@MusicalOxygen
I think maybe she had to give the piano player a signal to start playing again slowly
Berlin?
That's all you get.
She is off the map! A league all her own!
music lessons in the school brought me here
The most incredible thing about this performance is that it's all improvised. The musicians follow her and just go with the flow. You have to be really good to keep up with the singer and come in just when she needs you.

Can't be 1960. She quotes "Hard Day's Night" which wasn't written until 1964.
Who remembers John Witherspoon singing this on Fresh Prince lol
That's why I'm here
Happy birthday, Ella. We love and miss you.
Anyone know who's in the band behind her, or what year this was recorded?
@adfgsdfgsfdgbsfgbsdf really??? people speak this way in 2010?
Could someone tell me what is the theme at 3:15 ? Thank you !

Wonderful scat singing.

Well now I know where the Beatles song "Hard Day's Night" comes from.
Anyone else come for the ornithology reference? No? Just me?
Великолепная импровизация и scat.
Спасибо, Степа!

Awesome!!! :))))
non ci sono commenti da fare la più grande vocalist jazz di tutti i tempi sentirla fa venire la pelle d'oca il suo mito resisterà per sempre
This is a joke, right? WHERE IS THE FREAKING REST???
