    Thank you for watching my #TechniqueTalk tips on getting stronger octaves! Let me know down below if you've ever had a problem with octaves like me! I'm not ashamed to admit that if you watch any of my older videos (circa 2015-2017) you'll notice I can't play octaves AT ALL hahaha...

    Adam, do you keep the mallet base centered in your palm when playing octaves? I actually let the mallet base travel up to the webbing between my index and ring finger when playing octaves. It takes a lot of practice to get used to this (because it's right on the cusp of letting the mallet slip between the fingers), but it significantly reduces the amount of tension in your hand and actually yields quite a bit of control. In general, my philosophy is that the smaller the interval, the further down the palm rests the base of the inner mallet (so, in a second, at around the thumb muscle for me). From there, it follows a track up to the space between the middle and index fingers. This way, I never have to really change my fulcrum, and my index finger and thumb basically stay across from each other the whole time!

    Could you possibly learn and perform frogs by Abe? I feel you would be great for that solo. On the other hand, I love your vids, keep up the great work!

    I noticed that you love octaves when I learned your "Lotus" solo 😂 Had to practise the octaves a lot for this solo! It's a lot better now.
    Didn't now tip No. 3 yet, thanks! 🙏 Also so far I didn't use mallet tape but I noticed that I sweat really hard.. So maybe I should try this. Do you have a video or resource on how to do that?

    Did you ever have an issue where your pinky gets fatigued really quickly? The first joint on my pinky starts to give out after practicing for a while :(

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  5 років тому

      Yes when you first start your ring and pinky fingers may be tired quicker! That's why I did the single stroke roll with the two outside mallets for a while to get my outside fingers to be less weak haha

    EXTENDED GRIP! Come on!

  • @nicholaspedroza9060
    @nicholaspedroza9060 5 років тому +1

    two words: extended grip... THE most comfortable octaves you could ever have is by sliding the inner mallet upward from you your palm, to the area right under you middle and ring finger.

      EXACTLY! Why he does not do this is a disservice to one of the best benefits of playing Stevens. Disappointed.

      @@caroljames1314 people can’t be bothered to learn it the original way and frankly I think a lot of people don’t even know that this technique exists
