What did you think of the final shot? Mads has rekindled the spark with his wife, his students have graduated, and he is celebrating with his two friends. He seems to be experiencing ecstasy but is also diving into the same body of water where his friend drowned

I thought the ending was one of the finest I've ever seen. There were so many layers to it, from Mikkelsen's incredible dancing, to the ecstasy you mentioned where he is truly happy for the first time in the story, to him being surrounded by blissful, ignorant students who look up to him as a role model, it's an amazing sequence of performance and editing. My immediate feeling was that Martin had given in to the power alcohol possesses and decided to let the high take over him despite losing his friend and all the pain he went through. I felt he had accepted that he could no longer resist the pull of enjoyment that drinking brings and his final leap in that water that you so rightly said claimed his friend, was an acknowledgement that he, and human beings in general, are probably doomed when it comes to alochol, but the alcohol makes us too free to really care. Given that this is a Vinterberg film, I suspect the ending should be viewed in a far darker light than what was being shown to us!
