Nice to see someone explain the concept of ‘functionality’ so well using this song. It’s driven in our heads that the ‘v’ is the ultimate pull. Explains the excessive use of dominant 7ths in many minor songs as well or the switch to a major key in the chorus.
Thanks Jeffrey, appreciate the feedback! I find playing with the V chord such an interesting process... and like you said it gets used so often in dominant form that we need to find other ways of coming home to avoid everything sounding the same. Cheers
That b half diminished is definitely a departure! I’ve been trying to use it to bring me home for years. This could be very useful change of perspective. Thanks again for your great content!
Thanks so much! Much appreciated. I'm not sure if this would be of interest to you (it might be, if you are an active songwriter), but we put out other content and host monthly live Q&A sessions, which you can join here: www.patreon.com/howtowritesongs?fan_landing=true
Just find your vídeo. Incredibly well explained, thanks. From Spain, now I understand better one of my favorite songs.. LUCIA from Serrat/ covered also from Rosario Flores
Man, this channel is a gem! You guys teach in such an uncomplicated way, so easy to understand and so beautifully demonstrated. Thank you so much for the videos, greetings from Brazil!
Thank you so much for this lesson! I came across your channel a few days ago and loved it immediately! All your explanations have been of great help, but this subject in particular has been a mistery that I wasn't able to figure out. Years! And you gave me the answer in under half an hour. Looking forward to learn more, thanks again from Argentina!
@@htws I found this channel month or two ago. I love you guys I’ve shared you with a number of my friends. I’ve been writing for 30 years. Most of what you’re covering I knew but you guys have showed me so many things that I did not even think about. Thank you
Really a great work, nice examples and illustrations, cover all the basics in only few minutes... And definitely improve my minor keys songs knowledge! Thank you, I'm happy to buy 2 PDFs from you and you have a new subscriber.
good! the substitution with the full diminished chord and its inversions is interesting. Heard maybe a million times but never realized conceptually why and where sounds good. And the V7 role too! for what I understand it's borrowed from the parallel major tonality
Hey lorenzo! The V7 is 'sort of' borrowed from the major tonality, but in the history of music, it became popular about 4 or 500 years ago when composers were seeking a stronger cadence in the minor key, and ended up generated what we now know as the 'harmonic minor' - they basically invented a new minor scale to accomodate that V7, rather than conceptualizing it as a 'borrowed' chord. These days, composers really think of it, and talk about it, and use it as a truly 'minor' key chord, just coming from the harmonic minor.
@htws I always think of the V7 in a minor (Aeolian) chord progression as the V7 of the i. Since E7 is the V7 of A. But I'm self-taught 48 years, so perhaps that's not the case theory-wise. 😊
Hello, what were the chords that were played around 24:25, when you wanted to demonstrate Departure, Return and then another chord to increase the tension? Thank you
amazing video as always, question, if i have my capo on how do i find the different voicings, i tried finding on google found nothing. so i am writing a song with capo on 2 fret and in minor key em and want to use some of these suggestions, now i don't know how to make or find these chords haaa, any info on this? would love something in print of these different chords with and without the capo obviously, you touched on them a bit here. thankyou!
Thanks! Good to get feedback on what specific topics you're keen for more on :) I'll add more modal stuff to the list :) If there's every videos, tutorials, or topics you'd like to see (or see more of), please let me know here: facebook.com/keppiecoutts/posts/5788800087813751
What a brilliant lesson. The fog is lifting from minor alchemy after 20 years..... Thanks a lot. can you speak about songwriting with modes in this sort of presentation?
Hey Daniel, Keppie here! There are a couple of videos posted on writing in modes, if you look under the Music Theory for Songwriters playlist. Hope that helps!
Minor chords sound sad and may therefore induce depression in listeners. Always precede a minor chord song with a trigger warning or you could be liable for someone’s suicide.
This is gem of a lesson, beautifully explained, nice guitar playing and singing too. Thank you
Thanks, much appreciated! Glad it was helpful!
Man really love the G# being exploited as a leading tone to Amin in Thrill Is Gone. That's a classic walking bass maneuver!
I just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you very much to taking the time to share this priceless knowledge. Excellent cathedra Maestro!

This is the video and information I have been looking for for so long. Thank you! Once I absorb this fully, I will want to dive even deeper.
Yes! After the breeze that the major scale version of this video was this minor deep dive, is a lovely workout for the head and fingers. Love it!
So cool. The More I watch these videos the more the concepts click.

Hi , I love your Videos , But I'm French , is it possible to get the subtitles in French , Please , Thank You ?
Hi Kish, glad you're enjoying the videos! I'm not clear on how to customise the subtitles in UA-cam work but we'll look into it. Thanks
Why do you have a flat over the major chords/ III, VI, and VII ...
Q: What do you get when you drop a piano down a mine shaft?
A: A flat minor.
hmmm ...excellent!!! Innovative 💡 cos most lyrics sings nonsense!!! GypsyTrail
Thanks Daniel, appreciate the feedback!
I can often get a catchy couple of bars, and then moving anywhere else feels forced and broken
your fretboard is dirty as swill
clean it
