I disagree. Michael's advice is the same thing as Vito's. It's basically an edict to control your emotions and never let anyone outside of the family know what you're thinking. Michael absolutely puts more trust into his own blood than outsiders just like his father. Michael's problem is that he didn't know how to handle the pressure of wielding power over both business associates and family. That's the contrast we see in Godfather II as we see a young Vito rise up from poverty with Michael's ascension and gradual isolation from being at the top.

Sonny expresses his interest in solozzo's proposal after the don has already given a final answer. This way he unwillingly gives insight to the family's internal disagreement on the drug issue. Solozzo realizes that by removing the Don he might still have a shot at making business with the Corleone family, as the new leadership under Sonny and Hagen would appear to be more willing to cooperate in that matter. In an earlier scene you can see that Hagen too seems undecided on the drug business, but emphasizes its importance in the years to come. Yet, unlike Sonny, during their meeting with an outsider he keeps his thoughts to himself and presents himself as entirely submissive to the Don's stance.
Good analysis. Solozzo isn't stupid. In the movie screenplay Sonny's speaking out of turn confirms Solozzo's suspicion that there is a split in the Corleone family regarding getting into the cocaine business. He knows that the Don's position is somewhat "old fashioned" syndicate business (corrupt unions, gambling, prostitution) but Sonny, Tom, and perhaps others (Fredo?) would likely go for his deal. Mike knows this (when he says Solozzo needs to kill the Don, its his "key") but chooses to defend his father.
Al Lettieri put on a tremendous performance as Sollozzo. His gravely voice, menacing demeanor and authentic Sicilian New Yorker persona made his character seem very natural and genuine as a sly gangster.
I said this on another Channel but it kind of parallels David Cohen keeping his mouth shut with Rachel Mencken of Menckenburg's Dept Store took a Meeting with Roger Sterling, Don Draper and Pete Campbell on Mad Men.
Actually it was genius. When Sonny spoke out of turn it made it seem like they would go along with Sollozo but Vito was holding them back. By sending Luca is would've confirmed that the family is tired of Vito. Problem was the Tattaglias and Barzini already had a spy in the family (Paulie "Leave the gun take the cannoli" Gatto) and they knew Vito's plan.
When he said to Hagen "tell Luca Brasi to come in" the camera switched from the light side to the dark side of the Godfather's face. The meaning of this is clear. That is good film making.

Watch this scene from 1:00 to 3:00 without sound. Sonny really stands out. Everyone is pretty motionless, except for Sonny, who is almost fidgeting. He moves around more than anyone besides Vito (whose motions are very deliberate). Sonny takes a drink while Vito is speaking, whereas the others are paying close attention. At the end, the others rise pretty much in unison, while Sonny takes a few extra seconds to stand.
I also like the dismissive wave Vito gives Sonny at 1:11telling him to move aside so he can get the bottle, and then Clemenza and Hagen’s faces at 2:14 that both seem to say “Oof marone, Sonny, you just f*cked up!”
As perfect as the Godfather is, Luca Brasi should have gotten more screen time. I love how the Don was just as nervous to talk to Luca Brasi as he was to talk to the Don. They even showed a little of that in the wedding sequence where Don Corleone asks Tom Hagen if he has to speak to Luca who was very nervous about speaking to the Don.

+dorsal 2008 exactly my thoughts. They sort of ruined the Luca Brasi character in the movie. In the little screen time that he gets, he is shown as a bumbling oaf and later he gets killed easily. In the novel, Luca is a killing machine greatly feared by the entire criminal fraternity and one of the main reasons why nobody would mess with Don Corleone. His brutality is described in detail in the novel where one of his hostages chokes and dies when he sees Luca torturing the other one. I love the Godfather movie but hate what they did with Luca.
+dorsal 2008 They weren't gonna show Luca's backstory. He had a mid-wife throw his newborn child into a furnace after an irish girl he raped became pregnant.
Al Lettieri died at 47 from a heart attack, same age as his character Virgil Sollozo, also the same age Marlon Brando had when he played Vito Corleone.
That's a mistake by the Godfather, worse than the one he admonishes Sonny for; no one is going to believe that Luca is unhappy or disloyal. He's sending a good soldier to his death. He should have sent someone else.
Yes, but Luca Brasi wasn't really part of The "Don's Family" he was just someone he used once in awhile for help. Remember the Contract Situation with Johnny Fontaine. Also remember he didn't expect to be Invited to Connie's Wedding. If anything he was like an Office Temp who didn't the perks that Full Time Employees get. Benefits, Pension and the like.
I thought he didn't expect to be invited because he was one of the unsavory henchmen the Don utilized. His hands were bloody and he didn't expect the Don to treat him as anything but a hired goon. He expected to be kept in the shadows and the back alleys.
I learned a lot from this scene. Especially when Don Corleone asks "why do I deserve this generosity?". Sollozzo thought that Don Vito was a greedy gansgter, but he never counted with Don Corleones wisdom to smell something suspicious and dark in the operation. I think when there is not a good deep personal reason to start a business, and there is only money involved, that business has something wrong. Normally a business with associates has a policy, a motive that goes far beyond money, and Sollozzo could not explain that.
