This is a really good video thank you for uploading it, I'm starting to learn this x
This video looks like it was done in Kettering ohio. Pretty sure I’ve trained in that room.
@@troyec001 nailed it Troy!
Do have any videos on the 3 Section Staff? I could not find any. I am making my own, and two sets of 'chucks. Yes I will soon be double 'chuckin' again!
I am having a real problem with the figure 8 spin. I do not think I am turning the staff correctly. Even in your slow motion mode you give here I can grasp the manner in which to spin the staff. I have tried pausing the demonstration periodically throughout the demonstration but can not understand how it is spun. Do you have anyway to help me out with this?
I'm suddenly completely hyper focused on learning bo staff.
Can relate, my love for it started when I saw Darth Maul
What the hell is a staff staff?
@@omarnaja5535 bro yes do you remember, may a kotor person, that had a saver staff that would split into two dual wield sabers? I want a staff like that.
Same tbh

1:47 "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." such a simple combination of words that means so much.
Thanks. I heard that a lot during training in the military.
Him : Japanese bo, Korean longstaff
Me: Broom with the sweepy thing taken off
THAT"S LITERALLY WHAT I DID TODAY TO PRACTICE!! HAHAHAH
Me: Extra PVC lying around
very accurate and that's exactly what i did haha
@@asew4897 same also a broom stick tho
me: 5 feet of 1/2 inch pvc pipe
The Stick is the oldest man made weapon
It's in our blood
You are right!
Actually, naturally grown sticks were, along with stones and rocks, the first weapons
@@KaptainCanuck He said man made tho.
Sharpen the end and it will be in their body too, lol XD
Bone
I love how you teach as if the student (camera) is next to you! It feels realistic 🤣 do more bo staff pls!
whos doing this over qaurantine and just has a nice stick
I started with a stick!
I made a bo staff from a tree in my backyard
@@pasquinilli same I'm using a stick that my dad uses to mix paint.
Lol i was cleaning my bunnys' poop with a broom that was kinda broken and it broke and im using the stick
I made a big stick with my broken rake
Woooow I- ur the best teacher I’ve ever seen thank you so much
You teach so simple and easy , I respect that , cool dude thanks
My pleasure. Thanks so much for watcuing! Keep training.
bro i'm finna be Donatello 💀💀💀
Go for it!
I'm still at it practicing with my boa staff paint stick, self taught myself for 12 years, I'm 66 , now and love the range of motion, flexibility and speed increase and even spinning it behind my back..I'm learning now a lot from you, your an excellent teacher..I love the boa staff and also still need to get a boa staff from you..
Thanks for posting your videos. I was on flag team in high school (15 years ago now) and we used many of the same practice spins and some of the strikes that you cover in your videos. Your tutorials are a great refresher, as I'm using my old training flag as a workout and had forgotten a couple of things.
I remember flag team! You guys are master spinners! I’m glad you are reconnecting with your flag! Keep training and keep your passion alive!
The Epic Music was a nice touch!
Haha. Thanks!
I love this guy, thx for the tutorial man!
Thanks Zuya! I love you too! Keep training!
you sound like your doing it for life an death
Thanks for this video. Since the quarantine started my old muscle injuries have been getting worse but this video is helping me learn how to use a bo staff as a part of my physical therapy.

@George Klauss Awesome! Great staff to start with! Really strong and light.

I know now I’m a master
loving the vids :))
Does a square stick work
Love this! Thank you so much for this great video. Very practical tips. One can see you are a great teacher by your clear and crisp instructions.
Thank you Anupama!
I just knew what a Bo staff is and am suddenly interested in learning even tho I don't have a staff yet
Grab a broom!
I'm a woodworker who was looking for a physical activity that would connect with my love for wood. The Bo staff seemed like a great option so I crafted my own out of white maple and here I am now looking up how to use it! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this tutorial. The thing about starting slow really helped me !!!
There is something interesting about learning staff martial arts for me. For some reason I really love it. Probably because it's really multifunctional. It looks and feels cool, can also be used for self defense and also works as a workout or exercising to improve my condition. That I call a really nice 3 in 1.
Awesome. Thank you for that thoughtful comment!
I didn't realize this is what I have been doing for at least a year on my own with a broom stick. I'm so excited that I can learn more than what I was playing around with!!!!
Awesome. Glad we found each other. Merry Christmas!
When he said space and time you knew this is next level learning
Thank you Harry!
Morgan from the walking dead inspired me to learn bo staff ha!
I love that! He is all chill after learning to use the staff too. Then he cracks some rotting skulls with it!
Same here dude! TWD is my favorite show and I found Morgans stick training to be cool and time filling during quarantine lol
lel me too
This is the only instruction I've seen that covers the "push up" grip as he calls it! It is by far my favorite and no one covers it. Great video!
Thank you for your clear and focused tutorial. I'm about to learn bo staff and watching this has given me confidence.
Thanks Zarah! I’m glad it helped!
Can't wait for the warmer weather to start practicing these.
Tom Strauman find a shorter staff that you can use inside now and go through the motions slower at first. If you master the shorter stick inside, you will be amazed at what you can do with the long staff outdoors.
Off to Home Depot for a 48” dowel rod tomorrow!
That’s the idea! Keep training!
Thank you man, I watched you about 4 years ago when I was 6 I WAS 6. This really helped me I wanted to come back to you to thank you.
this is the best youtube channel to learn martial arts not even joking
Thank you! That is very kind of you to say!
After watching a lot of the Batman movies I've been really drawn to learning Escrima and Bo Staff fighting due to my favorite DC character's Nightwing and Red Robin (who uses a bo staff as his main weapon). I did this with a workout stick we have and I surprised myself that I have the coordination for this! So excited to see where my progress goes!
i've started training and as a women it feels awesome to know if i have to fight, i will fight. i may not win but i will not give up that easy before trying to defend myself. Thanks to the great teachers on UA-cam, thanks to you!
Here is my question, i am a small women, what would be the best martial art for me to practice in order to defend myself when i have to?
You will win! You should study and train using principles instead of techniques. I’ll make you a video about what I think is best for you. Start here in the meantime ua-cam.com/video/gm4rPf50YMA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/NqDwUHpH1rQ/v-deo.html
@@pasquinilli Thank you so so much!

This was so helpful and useful!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!!🙏🏻😄 I’m so pumped now👊🏻
Another great lesson! Sam
thanks Sam!!!
meme me hi Melvin
I learned tae kwon do from a korean friend and i practiced for a long time in prison kicking and blocking and blocks and punches and the other day i told my sister i could handle 3 guys with knives as long as i had a stick to keep distance first and to work my way out of the circle second then to either run or start breaking arms and jaws with a staff. But i thought huh theres got to be forms to learn with the staff and was very glad to find your video. Proper form and practice helps alot in a fight. Not using form but having the reflex memory. My reflexes are lightning fast when im mad or my back against a wall
I’ll finally live my dream of becoming Donatello💜
Recently taken up Bo as a form of exercise after my medical condition got worse already loving it not 24 hours in.
Fantastic! Keep training!
This is a great video, very easy to follow and informative. Excited to get started after having my staff sitting in a corner for a long time. Cheers
Hold on bad guy I have to warm up first
Hahaha.
Wow, Matt you're a great teacher, inspirational and very skilled I'm making a lot of progress.
Out of curiosity, would already having a similar familiarity with a staff or stick make learning some aspects of the bo staff easier? I used to do baton twirling, and I noticed that the spinning techniques are very similar if not the same.
yes! You will be a natural!
My staff was handcrafted by me, harvested from Alaskan Diamond Willow on my property, it is approximately 1 1/2" diameter and about 70" in length, have had it for over 20 years so I guess it is about time I learn to use it other than a walking stick. Alaskan Diamond Willow is so strong when the staff tips are set on chairs or other supports, a 200 pound person can sit on it in the middle and there is zero flex in the staff.
Great staff! Sounds super strong!
1:14 cant the attacker drop the weapon due to... you know the arm being hit hardly by a staff? wont there be a risk to hurt yourself really bad, especially if their weapon is sharp and not blunt?
ProtoNagaiako yes I think you are right. But in self defense, you are being attacked whether you fight back or not. Best to fight back, hit hard and first and maybe end the fight before you become the victim.
I don't know how to do the first spin
the sound of terraria I will make you a new video!
Just ordered my first Bo. Very excited
Awesome. Congrats! Let me know how it goes!
Just ordered my bow staff. Thanks for teaching the basics
why do i already know these technicues
i just found a big iron stick in my yard and have used it as a staff
You are a natural!
This was very helpful. Thanks for Sharing!
Im a fifth degree blackbelt myself (I train in karate and taekwondo for nearly thirty years) and im particularly interested in kung fu weapons. I see Matt that you obviiusly specialize in the subject of weapons.
Thanks Nicholas. Yes I have a deep passion for sticks as self defense tools!
Wow, that was a whole lot of information in 7 minutes. I need to watch through it a few more times then move out to the yard and practice.
Thank you Kip!
I think this is an excellent straight to the point video! Thank you so much. I think that just knowing these techniques alone is a very good start for self defense!🙂👍👍👍 Liked and subscribed!👍
Thanks. Welcome!!
Much love from Salta - Argentina. Thanx master!
Thanks Roberto!
Dear sir it's been a while since I done bo,wasnt proficient but after watching some of this and profect everything your teaching even in my late 50s
That’s great! I’m glad you are training with the Bo again! Welcome back and keep training !
The Bo Staff is my favorite martial artist weapon because, its all about discipline, smooth fluid like motion and crashing attacks. Makes you really apply what Bruce Lee was trying to teach us,
Bruce lee-
"Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
It worked! By jove it worked! The secret was "slap" grabbing the staff rather than waiting for it to strike my hand. This may not be used in combat but a spinning bow staff scares the crap out of most.
Thank you. I’m so glad it worked for you!
This Bo straff training is what keeps me of the bottlen. I practice this in the forrest and watch this video. Spin and figure 8 are the hardest parts for me
That’s great Jeroan. The Forrest feeds the soul.
Thank YOU love everything about this vid the explanation slow mo absolutely everything
This honestly just looks really relaxing
It’s like moving meditation. Will lower your blood pressure fast!
Thanks Matt . I trained in this at a very young age (judo - jo) and now I’m a little past the middle of life ; I’m getting into it again - your video is very helpful and I will practise all these moves and warm up techniques. 🥋🙏🏼 🇦🇺🦘🦘
That’s great Bodhi! I have many Jo tutorials here too. Have you seen them?
@@pasquinilli not yet, but I’ll be sure to check them out ! Very excited to practise all these techniques . Thanks again. 🙏🏼🥋🇦🇺
I just want to be wukong
Grab your money staff and train with me!
Amazing! This technique reminds me of Naruto vs Jigen . Jigen is the antagonist who uses a Bo Staff to fight .
If you run a quick search for "Naruto vs Jigen," it'll be the first result, just skip the video to 1:00 minute.
Although the fight is animated, pay attention closely and you'll actually see some key moments of Jigen using his staff to defend. Very interesting.
Thank you for your training videos, you make it easy to understand, and you are so charming ❤ thanks
Thanks for training with me Bianca!
I love the bo staff because it's a weapon that anyone can learn to use properly and one of the most practical. If someone's attacking you, you're more likely to find a big stick just laying around than something sharp. So it's a very useful thing to learn.
I enjoy your videos and trying to do them. Thank you
Thanks Tim. Keep training!
awesome instruction-- as I develop, I will watch them all..... thank-you !
This is amazing. I learned alot. Thankyou.
Awesome. Thanks for training with me!
Thank you, Sir, This is wonderful instruction!
Thank you Diana!
Bo staff just came in the mail, wish me luck ya'll 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Train hard and have fun!
Just bought a bo staff. Should be coming in a couple of days. I wanna be a passionate about something n get in the workout as well :)
How is it going? I'm currently waiting on an order myself
I use a mop with a broken head, it makes a perfect staff
Thank you. You're very good at teaching. Simple, defending and killing, not dancing as my japanese karate used to tell to their pupils.
Thanks! That’s how I like to be taught too! Keep training!
This is great. Just bought a Bo staff to learn as a hobby but you make me want to train under a waterfall.
Do it! So peaceful!
YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH
This came out 4 years ago and since my summer is boring i might as well spend it doing this because it's really fun! I wanted to learn this ever since i saw morgan in the walking dead-
Well, hopefully this is useful. I learned a bit when I was little doing shotokan karate, but it’s been a very long time and I don’t remember much. It certainly won’t hurt to re-learn and learn more.
Thank you Sensei Matt, greetings from México.
bienvenidos!
I learned the figure 8 when I was younger while in taekwondo but never got to fully practice due to lack of funds. Thanks for uploading this! Better to know how to do it and not need it then need it and not know how to do it
Good point Devin. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Thank you sir! I'm trying to get my cousins to spar with swords and my cousin favors the staff so I sent him your video!
Man, This was some Good Teaching! Thank you so Much- Charm
Thank you Charm!
Looks cool. I hope I will train this way.
You will. Thanks!
I hike a lot with a 54" hardwood staff, so I thought I should at least learn how to use it and practice. Thanks for the succinct videos. They're harder to find these days. I'll look into your link for bo staffs. I've found that spinning is much easier with heavier, longer hardwood staffs.
That’s great! Thank you for sharing and training with me. What kind of wood is your hiking staff?
@@pasquinilli I believe it's hickory or maple. I bought it at a hardware store. It's a handle for a rake. I have a 60" ash handle that's thicker and heavier, but it's not a uniform diameter.
You make it look so easy. Thanks for this
My pleasure. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Hey man I'm noticing a very similar technique to spinning rifles. Also, "the slow is smooth smooth is fast" hints at it as well. It's actually my ability to spin rifles that got me interested in learning this. I'm constantly spinning broomsticks, mops, or anything like that. I originally learned with a PVC pipe filled with sand back in 2005 ish, progressed to the demilitarized m1, and occasionally with my m4 while I was active duty. Anyways thanks for the video.
Thought after years of boxing I'd try something else and look where I ended up! Great video, very clear and easy to follow, thanks man!
Thank you Matt, I'm getting inspired
Awesome. Keep training!
Yo that was awesome!
Cant wait to get good at it
You will!!
@@pasquinilli Appreciate it! ^^
Im training at a sanshou Kung Fu dojo but I also wanna try to master a weapon and I love staffs
Suddenly I’m very determined to learn martial arts again. As a kid I was in taekwondo but I quit out, and now my best friend is in it and I’ll never forgive my younger self for quitting so early
I’ve been doing this with sticks since I was small (i didn’t know it was a actual thing) and today I found out what it’s actually called !
This is very useful thank you
Thank you Jameson!
Outstanding!
Thank you Steve!
I always loved the bo staff the range and defensive makes it fun
I think I can learn this. Thanks .
Yes Victor! You will learn it!
You're a boss Matt!

Thank you, master.

Very good! Thank you. I dont have a staff yet. But im gonna get me one. My intrest started when i was watching the walking dead. Carl in Sweden.
Thanks Carl! Morgan from TWD is very effective with his staff!
Great video. You teach well. Wish I could be one of your students!
Great job 👏 of job show how to spin the bo you have my full attention
Thank you Olowa! Glad to have you here training with me!
I just got a staff and this video was so helpful to get me started!!! You make it look too easy hahha Wonderful video!!
For me, I am inspired by the staff scene in Cobra Kai. Using it to rehab from a rotator cuff injury. Thank you.
Great tutorial.
Thank you James!
Ever since I started watching Songs of War and watching Achillean fight Ingressus with his staff with great endurance, I really want to learn bo staff.
I need to watch that. Where did you watch it?
Hmm I don't know how to set a link but I'll give you the short video of it by the community. It's called Tidesinger vs Deathsinger.
Love this guy
Wanted to learn how to use Darth Maul Sabers in Beat Saber. My interest into it intrigued me into learning how to how an actual staff cuz i have one.
I'm using a broomstick - it's not as long as it should be but it's a good start.
