The best ride Hobie Mirage adventure island sailing kayak on a windy day in Long Beach NY

- I show how to start out from dock with a single seat always peddling into the wind which is southerly. Heading out to the channel on a windy day on Reynolds channel in Long Beach, NY. You better be fit to run this buggy. When going against a strong wind is just like going on a steep incline on a bicycle. But once you catch the wind its like a water ride. Video recorded with GoPro Hero2. If you just want to kayak, remove the outriggers and sail. Coordinate the pedals with the oar and you can fly.
I can't see putting anything attached to deflect the waves from splashing, that's the fun part.

Robert,
Hello from the other side of the country--Long Beach, CA! I sail a yellow Adventure Island out of Alamitos Bay, and your vid exactly captures what it's like out there. These boats are a blast; thanks for helping spread the word. Fair winds! -- Ken Borgers
I love your exuberance! The Adventure looks fun
Lot of fun in hot weather. Thanks for comment.
Man I gotta get one of these. I just made my own little sprit sail for my fishing kayak last week and am loving it. Kayak sailing is just more fun than my day sailor, I have a CLC Skerry, which is a cute little wooden sailing row boat. It is fun under ideal conditions but is a real pain to get in and out of shore on a rough day. Being able to switch from sailing to paddling quickly or doing both at the same time makes for a much more enjoyable and safer experience. Think I am going to sell the old Skerry and get one of these bad boys. Thanks for the vid.
thanks for your story. I like it for getting wet and having to peddle, then I use another kayak for upper body. Have fun
Congratulations on a great teaching video. You gave your audience excellent commentary on what you were doing and how to do it. 👍
Thanks for the comment. That was my intent
From an Australian Hobie sailor - nice work!
Thanks for commenting
Nice and a good sailing lesson for beginners like myself. Like the way explain what you were doing....
Great Video, very exciting, looks like a lot of fun.
JCameron Video Productions Thanks for comment. In just a few more weeks I'll be on the water again
Just watched 9 years later and still a great video. Just recently got both a single place and a double place: Adventure Island and a Tandem Island. In SoCal and can’t wait to do a Catalina run.
Very nice, have fun sailing!
DAMNIT MAN! Now I gotta buy one! Curse you for posting such an awesome vid! :D
+Ark Survival Play
sorry, it was so much fun I had to let the world know
could run you up to almost 1k once you add spinnaker, tramps, and dolly. if buying new. and if spending the 2k extra for the tandem, which is actually only 2 feet longer
+Larry Troxler cheap
It's quite a bit more than $1k. Try $4.5k single and $6.2k tandem.
After almost 8 years, this video is still fun to watch! It is your narrative and the excitement in your voice! Do you still use it?
I have to replace seat. Almost went out today
Way too much fun! Great footage thanks!
Good video, Mr. Chef. That is a nice kayak you have. Have fun.
this is a fantastic video. a strong wind with no waves. I too have to pedal around when I come about into the wind. Sometimes I can get up speed and come about without using the mirage drive. In Sarasota Bay it is so shallow that I often leave the mirage drive at home and just use the paddle to go into the wind.
Thanks for commenting. I have gone out on low tide and had to get out and push. No matter, all is fun even the time I went off shore from inlet to inlet with no turning back. Got bounced around a bit. Will do it again this summer.
Great video!! Cheers from the Northwest!!
Al Pine Thanks for commenting
first class video. Thinking of taking this up with a view to getting in to sailing. In Scotland wind is not a problem, i can assure you.
That is awesome!
Great video love the way that actually talk throughout the video. Keep it up :)
just need trampolines lol nice set up would love something like that
I have them, used them twice, not a fan. Thanks for comment
Looks fun. Keep on sailing.
Thanks for comment. Can't wait for summer
Yes, I hear that--but the tandem is a LOT more work to heft around--a major consideration for a guy like me who's getting up in years. Also, if you sail mostly alone (as I do) you can't beat the 16 for ease of handling and thrills!
-- k
Looking forward to getting out tomorrow!
Good wind today. I'll go out in 2 hrs. when the tide is up a little. Enjoy your ride.
@@ChefrobertKhoury We were having a great ride with a west wind 20-25 knots but on the way back it shifted from the north and the Hobie doesn't do well sailing close to the wind. I just got us closer to shore and pedaled for a mile
Nice video! Thanks for sharing.
I travel the bays on Long Island NY, never gone too far. I travel east to west or west to east. I need either a strong northern or southern wind. At times I will head out from my canal and if the wind is wrong I'll have to zig zag and that is no fun even with peddling. then I head home and jump into a regular kayak.
thanks for comment, wish I lived in Florida with this
Nice video very well done
Thanks for commenting
Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
Very cool!
Richard Duncan Thanks for commenting
It's like TOO MUCH fun ))
I know, those flippers really move. When I remove the sail and outriggers it's even faster.
I would too ! Nothing like it around !
Awesome!
very good
Thanx
could show the Long Beach,Ca a thing or two...nice ride..New Yorker!

Thanks for commenting
check out the speed record for a sail..they placed the sail parallel to the hull on a pontoon..65.37 mph...Aussies...see on u tube
Hey Robert, nice job on the AI. I too own own here in SC.
Thanks for commenting. Good luck in getting one, it's like riding a motorized kayak.
so epic!
great vid inspired me
Thanks for commenting
thanks for comment. I handle my cooking videos in the same manner.
So im curious will this rig work for any kayak. or is it custom fitted? If I have an LL Bean Touring Kayak can i buy everything including the stabalizers except for the actual Kayak? Nice video by the way.
body weight is the only counter weight to the pontoon going under and pitch poling the entire craft....that is living on the edge.
+John Rogan I wonder if that happens much? I've seen several videos of this but no big splashes-
+Nick Weiss
It's rare that the wind is in my favor and strong
peddles and pontoons...way cool!
I have watched this a couple of times. It seems that you are having a lot of fun. I want to try out my friend's smaller Hobie kayak. It is a Mirage and has the sail, but she does not know how to use it. I am wondering if I should get the pontoons first. The lake is warm though. I used to sail out of Alamitos Bay, California, too. Now I live in the desert. I miss sailing a whole lot.
I use this more than my jet ski. It isn't set up to keep the waves off. Getting wet is part of the fun.
Robert Khoury Where I sail won't have the length to sail before having to turn around, but I am going to check it out. I will check the rigging to see if I can test it without the pontoons. The wind switches here a lot.
Rocque Bowen If you mean put up sail without pontoon, not stable
We just got the pontoons today and the furler part for her Hobie kayak, today. I get to be the one to test pilot it. Maybe on Monday when the lake is more empty.
thanks for comment. I pray for wind. Wish it had 2 more feet in length.
appreciate the comment, thanks
Thanks for commenting, and it is
thanks for commenting, Send me some of that Scottish wind.
Thanks for comment, have fun
I don't remember the wind speed that day. I'm guessing if the wind was 25mph I could be close to that.
I have a two seater and am looking to get a single seat with sail. I have an upper limb disability and might be in trouble if I capsized. Have you ever capsized?
Never, and never will. I site on the hull to keep level and I would release the sail to slow then pull it in.
Great vid! thanks for sharing looks like really good craic! What sort of speeds can you do sailing only in those conditions like in the vid?
Thanks
If the Kayak capsizes how would you upright it and perform a self rescue ?
The wind was whipping here at lake Murray. 25mph with 30mph gust! I attached my go pro to a 4 ft pole and took my adventure island out for a spin. Some really fun action. Head on over to my page.
I'll have to ignore your comment and go with those who have enjoyed the video.
Can you list your full setup. I really like your peddle Kayak with the pontoon's. Which kayak are you using and are the pontoon's an accessory? Did you use a hobie sailing kit? Thanks in advance!
What you see is the Hobie mirage adventure island kayak. I bought nothing extra. Mine is about 7 years old. They have improved of the seat which was the only problem.
Thanks for the quick response, would you say she's ocean capable?
I was out on long beach ny on a normal day for 15 mile run. Not a rough surf
yes, it needs it
Sorry, tricky business. This is the Hobie kayak adventure island. It is not custom fitted. If you were to see one close up you would see the hardware is attached.
hAVE YOU EVER GOTTEN TOO FAR FROM HOIME TO MAKE IT BACK OR DOES IT SAIL UPWIND AS WELL?
thanks for commenting
thanks for comment
Great video! I'm wondering how you transport this and get it in the water? I would love one of these. Do there come with a trailer or is that additional?
I missed your post. I live on a canal. There is a trailer for it
I put my adventure island on top of my car. I own a hyundai sonata and it does just fine. Make sure u do get some good roof racks though the yak will bend low quality ones. Its a pain in the a$$ to load and unload but if u have a hobie cart with inflated weels it should b no problem. U dont need a trailer unless u have the tandem AI. Take the akas and amas apart and put them inside the veichle to lessen the weight
@@attiumeyami417 how do you fit akas and amas in your sonata. Don't the amas have to go on top?
Do you have a centerboard of some sort on there?
Some of you say living on the water how long can you live on it can you pack enough supplies for more than a couple of weeks can you paddle it with a regular kayak paddle
I live on a canal not the kayak. Remove the outriggers and sail and you can use it as a kayak
looks like a fun wet ride ! how do you like that hobie ? im thinking of buying one ?
Kenneth Ingalls
I enjoy the wet ride, that's where the fun is. I love it. The newer model has a sturdier seat. permanent daggerboard. Thanks for commenting
im envious !!!! enjoy bud !
Ken Ingalls
Thanks much
Alright I'm tore I want one if these or a 60s 16 foot statecraft what should I get ?
2 different animals. With the Hobie you get wet, peddle when needed, alone unless you get the tandem, or join a group, It's fun and a workout, no gas, you can fish with it. You can relax with a boat and fish and bring a friend, pay for gas and hose it down, paint it, a lot more work.
never happen to me, if the wind was so strong that you loose control. Pull the sail in. Also I wouldn't be out with 30+ mph wind
do you have problems on just going downwind?
Sometimes tacking doesn't work. The waters I run go east to west. If I have a direct north or south wind, that's fun. east or west wind lots of tacking not fun but great exercise
if I could only be
what are the circumstances of a windy day?
If your walking and your hat gets blown off your head
One more thing ..... Yo can I come to dinner at your house ? Damn you make some food .... I just ate and I'm starving now wtf
Hobie adventure island
like ernest hemingway
This is hillarious! "We're running now", when the boat is on a reach!. and "let's try to make a turn now". wtf?
It's a video for fun sorry if you don't see it, others do.
+Robert Khoury sorry, it does look like a lot of fun. And actually i have to admit that this thing might actually fill a nich for people like me
How easy is to tack? I noticed that you pumped the pedals just once or twice while turning through the wind. Is that just to give it a slight nudge past the in irons point?
If the wind is not in your favor in one direction you get a work out tacking. If I would have done a quick turn no tacking is needed
+Robert Khoury I would think it would be the opposite in that if you manage to tack without cheating with the pedals, then it's certainly less work. can you actually tack it. I know that cats are fussy that way. lots of people backwind the jib to come about.
Sorry, not on any kayak. This isn't custom fitted. It is the Hobie adventure island.
Just got a hobie outback with a sail.. heard its a little tipsy
Never had a problem. If a side lifted out of the water I would slide out of seat and put my ass on the side of the hull or you can pull the sail in to slow. I never slowed or tipped over.
@@ChefrobertKhoury nice thanks cant wait to try it, i got the amas to help stabilize in Hawaiian waters
Did you have a gps? if so, what was your top speed. I am debating whether to buy a Hobie or a Windridder 16.
No gps, lower in the water than the 16. I wouldn't use the nose attachment to avoid the splash. That's what I love, getting wet
ok, I wanna do this but.. especially in NY you have big sharks out there. ever get scared?
never entered my mind. I never saw a shark. Only went into ocean once.
And thanx for commenting
seems dangerous
+John Rogan
Not at all. I have never flipped over. If wind is too strong just release the sail
You really understand sailing, Robert!....the principles are the same on a 73 foot sailing yatch!
If your outrigger floats are that wide, it is giving a hard pressed rig false clues. You really shouldn't need that wide. The problem with this rig is that it is not giving sufficient feedback about being over-pressed. A conventional boat will heal progressively and that gives you clues about reefing. This rig is fundamentally flawed in that it doesn't give feedback until you catastrophically capsize. The rig is also far too complicated and expensive. There are too many parts that could fail. I am surprised that Hobie cannot think of a more elegant, simpler solution that is also safer.
Interesting comment. It is easy to be critical. I'm aware that this unit is at the low end of its group. I would never tip over. Release the sail and roll it in. It only has one sail but I have fun for the price I paid. I use other kayaks on a calm day. I also enjoy getting wet. Your comment will help many in decision making.
It's very fun! The Tandem Island is the best. Good for fishing also. It's not a Weta, not supposed to compete.
bad idea the video effects.

How very expressive you are
