That will be one special John Deere 400 once it's done! Parts aren't always the easiest thing to find, especially for a specific John Deere. You got that right, iSaveTractors carries various parts, they carry a great assortment for the Kohler K532 Engine. Whenever I source parts, I look on Marketplace (which is local) and if I need to on eBay. Many times, it's a waiting game, since you never know when you'll find the parts. Another option would be to find a parts tractor, which has the parts you need. This might be the best and cheapest solution at the end of the day. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I have one also! It’s been sitting for years in the garage. It’s clean. Fuel stabilizer was add. Oil is good. New battery I need.. I do notice leakage of oil from something. Going to use her for A snowblower. Also have a F932 JD with 72” mower and a small JD140
That's awesome! It sounds like your machine is in great shape, especially with the fuel stabilizer and fresh oil. The oil leak might just be a simple seal or gasket issue-hopefully, it’s an easy fix. Converting it into a snowblower is a clever idea; that engine will definitely come in handy for winter work. The F932 with the 72” mower is a beast too-perfect for big jobs! @@WorkshopRebuild I need to correct myself, it is a restoration accompanied by a repower. When I got the 400 the engine is all in a cardboard box and from the looks of the cylinders 30 thousands will on get rid of the scoring. From the looks of it, the rings had a catastrophic failure.
@@4cornerssmallengineandfabr535 That's totally fine if you repower a machine! Sometimes a repower is a better solution, as they are newer and possibly more reliable. In your case, you did the right thing. Once the K532 is bored 30 over, you don't have much room to play with. I hope your 400 treats you well, with the new engine and that your 400 will last a long time! Cheers

Have you ever added a rpm gauge to this tractor, if so what kind did you use and how did you hook it up. I just finished a bunch of work to the motor and now need to dial it back in. Thank you and awesome videos!
I have never attached an rpm gauge to a small engine like this. I‘m not sure if there is any purpose for it, because most of the time these engines idle or run at the maximum rpm rating while mowing, tilling and doing other work. There are some great options on Amazon and they seem to have great ratings. Maybe this will help you determine your max engine rpm and give you good you, as an operator good feedback. Have had one of these in my collelction for about 8 years now and the one thing that heldl me back was where did the drive attach , I See Now , didnt think that was where it bolted to , but If It Works . Thank you . BTW : I Have the K582 Model Engine , basically the rest was basically the Same as the rest of this series with only very few minor changes in design and hp
It's nice to hear that you have a JD 400 in your collection, James! Hopefully with these help of this video you will be able to identify what repairs are needed. The Kohler K582 is a shade bigger than the Kohler K532, one being 23HP and the other 19.9HP. There is a spring connected to the parking brake that connects to the parking brake link/handle on one end but where does the other end connect? Mine was broken when I bought it and I have a new one but don’t know where to connect it Thanks a lot Great videos!!!
Hi there, great question! The parking brake spring on my John Deere 400 hooks up to the linkage by a cotter pin (this is the top end of the spring). The bottom end of the spring is hooked up to another cotter pin on the shoulder pin of the park brake mechanism. The shoulder pin is passed through two frame tabs and the pivot block that locks in place. Since the cotter pin is used to hold the shoulder pin, John Deere used the loop of the cotter pin to hold the spring. I didn't find any drawings where this is shown online, but I hope you understand this explanation. Regards Andreas
It depends how far they were in the engine. You want to clean out as much as possible, especially if they got into the intake! If it‘s just around the cylinders, make sure that‘s clean👍🏽

Thanks a lot Sergei! The orange knob for your High & Low gear is just pushed on! If it spins, you can easily pull it off. It will not break, the plastic has a pretty thick wall so you should be good. I hope that helps. Cheers
I recently just sold one on eBay and it was identical to this one (front exhaust style). I would recommend checking marketplace and see if someone is willing to part out a machine or possibly on eBay, but there aren't many of them for sale. I hope you'll find one, Best Regards -Andreas

Why dont uploaders ever check their volume balancing before uploading?? gotta turn it up to hear them quietly speak, and then turn it way down when the speakers start to bounce from their annoying random royalty free music..

Do you realize that the audio on this video when it first starts is so low that I can't hardly even hear it with my volume turned all the way up!!! And then the music starts up so loud I have to quickly turn the volume way down!!! But no matter what I do to the volume all that I can hear is that stupid music and I cannot hear any dialogue or work being done!!! In other words the dialogue is way too low and the music is way too loud!!! I'm sure a lot of people out there would like to complain but they're afraid to say anyting. A study showed that only one out of every twenty-seven people that don't like something will ever say anything about it. That means for every single complaint that you hear there's at least 26 other people that want to complain but didn't. So you can multiply every negative comment by 27. Some UA-camrs like honest constructive comments and others don't. What kind are you?
Hi TF856, thank you very much for your comment! I really value every single comment under my videos and I try to improve where I can with the feedback provided to me. I had a few videos with this problem, where the music was louder than my dialogue, and therefore the viewing experience was very poor...at least if you had your volume turned up all the way, while watching this video! For some reason when I edited these videos on my PC with headphones on, nothing stood out to me and I proceeded to upload this video. After receiving multiple comments like yours I was able to make adjustments and I haven't read any comments like this again. I believe I have since resolved this issue and I hope you will find my newer videos much more enjoyable. Thank you for pointing this out and sharing these facts with me! Regards Andreas
