    What killed MTV? Is it because they stopped playing music videos in favor of reality TV shows like The Real World and Jersey Shore? Some of what I talk about:
    --
    - Their early history and shows like Yo MTV Raps, Headbangers Ball and The Week In Rock
    - How The Real World season 1 changed everything by creating reality TV
    - How shows like Beavis & Butthead and Road Rules helped them become a lifestyle channel and stop playing music videos
    - How The Osbournes, Meet The Barkers and Newlyweds pioneered Keeping Up With The Kardashians
    - How Jackass, Viva La Bam, Wild Boyz and Tom Green pioneered prank channels like Fouseytube and Roman Atwood
    - The golden years of shows like Next, Room Raiders, Taildaters, Date My Mom, Cribs, Parental Control and more
    - Their last big hits like Jersey Shore, The Hills w/ Lauren Conrad and Life of Ryan w/ Ryan Sheckler

      The 90's were when what was played on MTV determined what was popular, but they weren't the golden years if you're referring to MTV as a music broadcasting channel. The 80's were when MTV was playing videos essentially 24/7, and the 90's were when that slowly began to decline, but at least they were pretty good about playing music videos all morning and at night. In the 00's it was almost as if radio became king once again, at least for a bit, because MTV almost completely dropped music videos from their rotation that decade. Now social media has completely taken over so no one cares about either MTV or radio anyway.

    Either you weren't allowed to or were too young to remember MTV in the late 80's, early 90's but it wasn't just New Kids on the Block. After school it was nothing but awesome videos, Alice in Chains, Metallica, G n R, Tool etc. Hangin with MTV, Rockline plus Head Bangers ball Saturday Night. Also lets not forget Liquid Television, Half Hour Comedy hour and Remote Control. It was non-stop awesome!

      Yeah, idk what Finn is talking about here when he says it was just New Kids on the Block and MC Hammer. I remember seeing all kinds of music all day long like Nirvana, Green Day, Danzig, Pantera, etc. Plus pop punk exploded with TRL, Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard was number 1 forever, not to mention that other pop punk bands like Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Sum 41, and especially Blink 182 owned the top slots on TRL in the late 90s and early 00s. Finn makes great videos and does good research, but I have no idea what MTV he was watching.

      this dude isn't old enough to make decent commentary on the rise and fall of MTV. I was in my teens when MTV arrived to cable TV. there had been a huge ad campaign before it's official launch and everyone was stoked to get it piped into their homes. He also doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to what was being played and what people were listening too, even without MTV. the music is out there, and people that are into it know about it without it being spoon fed to them via big budget music videos. some of the best bands I've ever heard never had a music video.

    • @kevrkey
      @kevrkey 3 роки тому +20

      He dates himself in his criticism. The rotation of videos he eludes to would've been ages after its launch. He doesn't even mention the Heavy Metal Half Hour and I don't recall him mentioning 120 Minutes either.

    If you ask me, reality TV killed not just MTV, but pop culture as a whole. Starting with 'The Real World' I blame that show for giving us all the reality crap we have now. The fact that worthless celebrities like The Kardashians are bigger than people with REAL talent who have to struggle to make it big infuriates me. However, as much as I want to see MTV return as A 24/7 music channel, music in general is very niche despite having A large impact on the culture. Sure, some of us like music, but the people who are So open minded that they will listen to ANY kind of music is very small.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife Рік тому +1

      Actually I think people being super open minded and listening to any music has changed what music even is in pop culture among the youth.
      As much as I have always been that person who will listen to anything, generations of kids who were obsessed with their niche corner of the music sphere actually was good for music. Like Rap having it’s own community meant you could market to that community. Metal having dedicated metal heads meant you knew what that market was. A lot of genras have bled into each other. Like modern country is very pop-music, rap/rock/punk etc have blended and melted-pot into each other so hard the frail line between them has now frazzled and broken. Almost any genra is pop music now. Those dedicated niche communities is what made shows like TRL or Yo!MTV Raps such special experiences. The internet has also changed everything. If something is popular now it’s ‘trending’ popular and everyone can access that trend via the same internet.

      From 2009 onwards, YT became the primary medium for promoting new music, including, of course, music videos, so MTV lost the role they previously had. Furthermore, newly remastered old music videos in HD or even 4K are still exclusive to YT.

    If you haven't yet, I suggest reading the book "I Want My MTV." It's basically a series of interviews/commentaries with various bands/musicians, MTV execs, etc. It also dispels the popular narrative that MTV immediately blew up when it premiered in August of 1981. In its first year or so, the network was struggling quite a bit - they had a small selection of videos to work with (at least a third of which were Rod Stewart songs), a number of technical/production issues to iron out, etc. And nobody was sure it would even last. But then "Thriller," the "I Want My MTV" campaign, etc. happened the following year. And the rest, they say, is history.

    "You have UA-cam. What do you need MTV for?"
    UA-cam launched in 2006, the same year you begin the decline of MTV. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.
    I'm about your age but I never really had MTV. My folks refused to get cable for the longest time. As my dad said "why would anyone pay for television?" Eventually he gave in but by that point I was pretty much an adult and didn't really care that much anymore. I don't pay for TV today. But that's a whole other thing. We have the internet today and more broadcast channels than ever..
    I did catch MTV at my friend's houses though and was always mesmerized. They would flip through fifty channels barely giving each a second and say nothing good was on, meanwhile I was like "wait... what was that... and that... and..." I remember MTV mostly in the '92-95 era when grunge was big and industrial was also in its heyday. Kinda wish I would have had cable then to see shows like Headbangers Ball more than just every once in a great while.
    I wonder if MTV went retro today and started playing just a lot of music videos along with a few classic style shows like Headbangers Ball, if it that would respark the channel. Maybe the current youngsters would be into that as something novel. What's old is new again kind of thing. Unlike a video on UA-cam you have to find or go out of your way to play, the one thing TV still has going for it is the auto-on nature of it. Where you just turn the channel and something is playing and you just get sucked into watching it, no matter how terrible it might be. Something you would have never clicked on if you saw the thumbnail on youtube. That's assuming you have cable and even turn the TV on.
    Probably not. My fifteen year old son barely even touches a regular computer let alone a TV if he isn't playing Xbox. It's pretty much just his phone for everything. I don't get it. I gotta have a laptop. A tiny phone screen just doesn't work for me.

Producers discovered they could save a lot of money on overhead by hiring neither actors with a pedigree or a scriptwriter, produce a "reality TV show," earn the same advertising revenue for the time slot, and make a MUCH higher profit since expenses were a lot lower. Quite a few points to make here
    1. When MP3s came out and we were ripping CDs left and right, we still watched MTV. 120 minutes was the Obscure music show, there you could find the music you would never hear anywhere else
    Tom Green was the first to do the crazy UA-cam stuff way before YT's time. He predated Jackass. Then he did his own show from his mom's house, which I believe he was one of the first to do that
    I'm saying this as a joke, but don't ever say Whack while having Guns and Roses on the screen lol. They started riots and often
    Parties used to revolve on MTV before things got wild. MTV was always on in my house. It's probably the biggest reason why I became a musician. Again, before UA-cam, I would play along with the music.
    Tons of us waited for hours and even days for a specific video to play. You kids think about that lol.
    One of the biggest things that people don't even mention or think about, is that an artist's music video was a major deal. Like Tool's videos were and still are a big deal when they come out.
    Also one of the biggest things of all, is the music video industry made a lot of people money. Certain directors were sought out because they specialized in unique and innovative videos. Spike Jones, Hype Williams, Gondry. Also the entire production team had jobs
    I hated TRL, you forgot that one, but it was a big deal to the teens. Us rockers hated that show and that kept a lot of us from watching.
    I don't what the kids talk about these days. But we would talk about music videos. Even the highly anticipated premise of a music video, it wasn't a Huge Deal, but it was a thing people looked forward to. MTV kept a lot of kids home. If I wasn't jamming, I was watching MTV or wrestling at home. We would go to each other's houses just to watch MTV for hours
    It was more than a music channel, it was a center piece for a lot of us. We aren't complaining about it going to shit, we're grieving

    • @actuallyNo...
      @actuallyNo... 4 роки тому +7

      That's all true...
      A lot of the purpose we had as kids/teens for MtV, was to sit around and jam, or party while it was on...or hell, we'd just lay around and watch it while we talked about what we were seein...and again, once we were back at school, or off the couch anywhere else, we'd still be discussin'what we saw on MtV, be it the latest vid., Somethin that happened on MtV News, concert dates, or the newest animated series episode.
      ...and shit yes, we'd wait for 2 weeks for a video to make its debut. All that anticipation. Jesus. Lol. What a rush. ..and all for 3 mins or less of a vid.--well worth it thow. [I'd wait all day just to get home for Headbanger's Ball, to see the chat with whatever band was on!]
      MtV wasnt a channel, it was a frame of mind!

Still, I can’t help but to get nostalgic about better, more entertaining times! But yeah, I’m definitely an avid UA-cam consumer nowadays lol

    I watch your channel all the time and I think I'm about 10 years older than you and I gotta say that MTV in the 80s was the best thing EVER. As a kid I watched it nonstop, I was transfixed with the videos, it was LIFE for pretty much everyone. When they brought on shows like headbangers ball, 120 minutes and yo MTV raps it got even better! Shit just died with the inception of the real world and slipped down a slope into complete crap as the years went on, it just got shittier year by year. So sad, it was such a great time while it lasted!

    I feel like you missed where the golden period was. From my perspective there was a sweet spot in the Late 80's / early 90's where there were programs, but mostly music video based, or music culture based. Programs like you mentioned 120 minutes, Yo MTV Raps, Headbangers ball, then The top 20 or so song that day. There were game shows "Remote Control" Musicians would be guest VJ's sometimes. They covered some large concerts, or Spring break. The Woodstock concert in 94 was great. There were long interviews with the artist, and tons of live sets it went on around the clock and brought the Woodstock festival to your house. Unplugged was terrific even resulted in some great albums. Liquid TV was the experimental show where Bevis & Butthead came from. That played late at night. They also had Dance programs like "The Grind". When the "Real world" came out, it was popular but, not for everyone it was hated by many people. MTV was great cause you could have it on in the background and still hang out with your friends where your not totally sucked in. Once it went all program in the late 90's early 2000's and beyond I hated it, and most people I know felt the same. I still don't understand what happened, why completely destroy your business model? Why not just create another channel that is programs and leave MTV a music television channel?

    • @Rayvn7

      And it was terrible that Fuse did not come onto every cable company by then, not until at least 5 years later before we finally had Fuse which was better in the first place in 2000s anyway since it was a rock and metal channel! Oh and your description is not "early 90s" it's just 90s; yes MTV got worse before the last year of the 90s which is 2003, and yes Real World already unfortunately existed, but the rest of the channel it still had enough normal shows and videos, it still had TRL, it still had metal shows, we just turned it off if Real World was on or other bad shit.

      To me, it seemed like the downfall started around the time Carson Daly left TRL. Maybe that is because it was around the time I started working full time and just home to watch it it every day.
      I also loved the MTV Movie Awards in the early 2000's, but that was mostly because of the movie parodies. I never really cared for the actual awards, so when they stopped featuring so many parodies between awards, it stopped being worth watching.
