- The Tree Planting Day had been one of a series of events to launch the Limited Edition Atlases, created by the public art project, Atlas Pandemica.
Inspired by one of Karen Campbell’s short stories from her publication, titled 'Here Is Our Story', Brian McAviney (Community Assets Supervisor), alongside Elaine Murray (Council Leader), and Rob Davidson (Deputy Council Leader), planted a ceremonial oak tree at Dumfries Museum on 25th March 2022.
As part of the public ceremony, Karen read from her collection and Joanne McKay read from her Atlas Pandemica project, 'What Remains'. Judith Hewitt (Dumfries Museum’s Curator) received an Atlas Pandemica Atlas on behalf of Dumfries Museum.
What Remains:
'What Remains' had been a research project led by Joanne McKay, working with council museum staff, local archivists, historians, and artists to unravel the history and meanings of pandemics in Dumfries and Galloway. A variety of prints, writings, objects, and artefacts had been exhibited in the Dumfries Museum in Summer 2021.
Here Is Our Story:
From July to December 2020, Karen Campbell had been Writer in Residence at Dumfries and Galloway Council. She interviewed staff across the Council to produce an anthology of 21 short stories called 'Here Is Our Story'. The anthology had been published in a limited edition by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
About Atlas Pandemica:
‘Atlas Pandemica: Maps to a Kinder World’ was a compendium of ten projects led by creative people, each investigating a different theme highlighted by life during the COVID-19 pandemic. These projects worked directly with people in Dumfries and Galloway, focusing on the impacts and the learning from the community’s experience of the evolving pandemic. Atlas Pandemica was conceived and managed by the community-led arts organisation The Stove Network. It explored local responses to the pandemic and how these might shape new approaches to our shared future.
The project was supported by the Scottish Government’s ‘Supporting Communities Fund’.
