The first scene shows Helen as a small child, lying in a bed. Her parents and a physician are near the bed. The physician speaks to Helen's parents. The caption reads : "Blind ...deaf and dumb". Helen's mother and father embrace and the caption reads: "We must never lose faith, my dear". Helen's mother gestures toward Helen and the caption reads: "Helen! ...My Baby!". The next caption reads: "Then follows a black night of five years. Just a lonely wild animal. Without knowledge, without thought". The next scene shows Helen as a young girl holding a doll and walking on top of a fallen tree trunk. Helen falls a few feet to the ground. She becomes angry and begins striking the ground and tree trunk with a stick. Helen walks to the steps of a house and trips. She becomes angry and begins picking up potted plants and breaking them on the ground. She sits on the steps and begins striking her doll. A young black girl with several braids in her hair watches Helen. The caption reads "Martha Washington". Martha speaks and the caption reads " Fo de Lawd! De debbil's suttinly got dat chile!". ( translation: "For the Lord! The devil's certainly got that child".) Helen realizes Martha is nearby and suddenly attacks Martha. Striking her and pulling her hair. Martha runs away and Helen chases her. They struggle again and a Black woman dressed in a long dress and apron and wearing a turban on her head appears and separates the children. Martha Washington runs away and the woman restrains Helen as Helen struggles to get free. Two young boys are holding tree branches and pushing them towards Helen in an attempt to control her. Helen's Mother appears from the house and Helen's father arrives riding a horse. The woman in the turban holds a handkerchief to her face and begins to cry. She speaks. The caption reads: "Poor lil Chile" ( translation ; "Poor little child".)The scene ends with Helen stroking the horses head, slightly smiling. The next caption reads: " In despair, appeal is made to America's great scientist, Dr Alexander Graham Bell, whose work as teacher of the deaf, led to the invention of the telephone." The next scene shows Helen and her parents being greeted by a bearded actor portraying Alexander Graham Bell. He speaks to Mr. and Mrs. Keller as he examines Helen. The next caption reads: " And yet, here is struggling intelligence. It must be set free." Dr. Bell searches his desk for a paper and shows it to Helen's parents. The caption reads: " From this comes the first great helpful idea of education, and a teacher for Helen." Helen's mother speaks to Dr. Graham. The caption reads: " You have given us hope. We shall do everything possible." Dr. Graham escorts Helen and her parents to the door, and the video ends.
