  • In this video, I do an expressive abstract painting using blue and orange acrylic paint. This painting started with the prompt “cracks in the pavement” like in my previous video - • Push Your Creativity: ... . This is a spontaneous painting session using big brush strokes and making marks. I spend time layering paint and looking for the direction this painting was leading me.

An expressive abstract painting is a vibrant and dynamic work of art that communicates emotions, ideas, or concepts through non-representational forms, colors, and textures. It is a visual exploration of the painter's inner world, revealing their unique interpretation of the world around them. Through bold brushstrokes, energetic splashes, and intuitive mark-making, an expressive abstract painting conveys a sense of spontaneity, freedom, and self-expression. It may evoke a range of emotions in the viewer, inviting them to interpret and connect with the artwork on a personal and emotional level. It is a celebration of artistic freedom and a reflection of the artist's creative spirit unleashed onto the canvas.
Acrylic paint colors used in this painting:
    Prussian blue
    Light blue permanent
    Winsor blue
    Cerulean blue
    Cadmium orange
    Cadmium yellow medium
    Naples yellow
    Titanium white.

Turquoise teal pink and violet but I'm liking orange lately.
I thought I was the only person that took pictures of cracks in the sidewalk, up close and personal with tree bark, piles of garbage if the colors are nice, after images of leaves on the cement in the fall, oil in puddles, such pretty colours like a trapped rainbow.

It's amazing the inspiration we can get from so many things most people never even notice. 😊

@@chrisloudart my very favorite thing is looking for tree people, when you're camping in a forest take the time to truly look at the trees there's often faces in the bark or twisted limbs in the roots.
It's a bit like watching clouds 😂 but they lurk in forests usually at dusk, I like to call them tree spirits.😊. I don't even bother telling most people, they just don't get it. 🥺 I also have collected rocks 🪨 ever since I was a little girl, each and every one is a different shape and color.😂

Forests are excellent places to get inspiration like that. Both looking up and down. I'm a big fan of finding patterns, colors and shapes in rocks as well.

I also like blue and orange... quite often i make mud, though. Also like prussian blue and ochre with dashes of orange.. I keep wanting to paint wet on wet because i am impatient. It's reassuring to hear that you also go through moments of not seeing where it's headed. The end depends so much on current mood and even focus. Thanks for the video Chris.

Hey Emmanuel! I'm pretty good at making mud myself. I have to keep reminding myself to slow down so I keep the colors separate.

Reminded me of one of those lantern fish towards the end. Big thanks Chris, BTW. I'm working on a painting of the poppy "super-bloom" in CA. Thanks to your videos and inspiration, I ended up finger painting a lot of the hills texture and raided my kitchen for tools to lay in the field of poppies. Carved up kitchen sponges did the job 😁

Hey Becky! I hadn't noticed that before, but I can see what you're talking about. I'm quite jealous about getting to paint the "super-bloom"! I love poppies! For some reason kitchens always have the best art tools, I do the same.

I'm new to your channel and love it! Can you tell me if you gesso your pages prior to starting a new piece of art? Also, what brand(s) of acrylic paint do you like best?

Thanks, J H! I typically don't gesso my sketchbook pages, however, I just bought a sketchbook that I can remove the pages and re-insert them. I think I am going to pull a bunch out, gesso them, then re-insert them. Loose pages and canvases I always gesso. For paint, Winsor & Newton for canvas pieces and typically use Liquitex Basics, or something similar, for sketchbooks and warm-ups. What paint do you like to use?

I tend to lean to the warmer colours in the red hues, I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone and I've been looking at abstract to do that, but I just don't get it yet. I experiment, but it just looks rubbish! 🤯😵‍💫☹️. Your painting looked great, thanks for sharing. Cheers!

Thank you! It took me a little while at first and many cringe worthy paintings to figure out how to work with abstract art. You'll get the hang of it. I still create many abstracts that just don't work, but I have a good time playing with them.

@@chrisloudart thank you for a reply, yes at the moment its ugly rubbish I'm producing, I've opted to experiment in my sketch book which no one gets to see. I'm finding it hard to change from nice safe landscapes that make sense to something......hmm obviously different, my mind can't make sense of it yet, I hope it will eventually. 😄 Thanks again for the videos. Cheers!

If you're interested you might find a channel called " imperfect paintings" interesting 🤔 he goes through all different styles of abstract art by different artists, many of which I didn't know, in a fun way. I went from hating abstracts most of my life to being very intrigued, to downright fascinated which is why I ended up here.
