For the boot of a car, I always go handlebars first and have one end of them go down between the back seat and driver's seat gap. This usually means only having to remove one wheel or managing to fit into some tiny cars.

I put my bike in handlebars first so they fit between front seats and that way you don't need to remove the rear tire. This work even for my small Ford Focus and XL sized bike.

As a small car owner, I have to remove both wheels every time. One trick I have come up with to deal with the loose chain, is to reinstall an old hub (without the rim) I had upgraded from back in to take up the slack of the chain

Handlebar at the front. Always. Unless you want to spend extra if it banged the rear windows. Place small cardboard box/cloth over mech just for protection.
Place some old towel and newspaper underneath to prevent scratches and bike debris.
Got an old '98 Honda Integra and my hardtail fits alright.

  • @junka1975

Definitely great advice there Neil. I like to use a plastic tarpaulin as a liner in the back of my wagon, it can handle the mud and water and keeps the car reasonably clean and protected. Also a light strap to keep the bike from moving around.
When I use the tow hitch bike carrier on the rear of the wagon I also have a light bar with indicators, brake lights, number plate lights and the bike carrier number plate on it. (In the state of Victoria in Australia you have to by law be able to visibly see the number plate of a vehicle from 20 meters away. Bike carrier number plates are around $40 to purchase to go with your car here and can be ordered through Vicroads over the phone or in store but not online surprisingly).

I carry my fatbike that way during winter to protect it from road salt & I double up on the moving blankets as studded tyres do the job on car interiors. I have scratches to prove it. My last two car purchases I took my bike into the dealership to make sure the bike would fit. Got a few strange looks and a couple of thumbs up.

I save the thick plastic cover from a mattress to use as a waterproof boot liner and find it easier to put the rear wheel behind the front passenger seat which I slide forwards as I am quite tall and my seat is a long way back.

Nice real world vid. I was expecting life changing tips and realised that I wasn’t so bad after all. 😅 In a golf I manage to keep rear wheel on but moving passenger seat way forward and tilting seat forward. Annoyingly I don’t have memory seats… but still faster than removing rear wheel.

  • @Falasi4

I did this for a long time with small and large (usa) cars - back in early 2000's even my L/XL mtbs were no big deal to fit but seems like wheelbases keep growing.
Good tips but best tip is have a car that can have a hitch rack. I did like the out-of-sight storage of having the bike in the trunk if I was planning a ride as part of something else where my car would be sitting in a lot.

  • @tonyo4984
    @tonyo4984 2 роки тому +2

I think its a case of finding what works with the car you have and then sticking to it. I use a massive old camping tarp which I can lay on the deck and then fold over the bike, that contains the mud. I am defo on the side of always fitting the disk caliper travel spacers, they stay with my travel kit and only take seconds to fit and remove. Echo the comment below about securing everything so if you do have a crash you don't have toolkits et al coming at you.

The only problem with my wife's e-bike is transporting it. It is HEAVY! Just about managed to manhandle it into the back of the car with the front wheel removed. I had planned to fit a towbar and rack, but that practically doubles the price of the bike, and I don't expect to have the car very long. I'm still considering the options!

  • @zmuzzy101

My favourite way for longer trips is both wheels off then lift the rear seat bases. The bike then goes in where the seat bases were. Wheels can then sit in alongside to give a full boot of space.

I can fit a Large Polygon Siskiu in the boot of a Fiesta, without taking the rear wheel off! Drive side up, rear end towards passenger seat, passenger seat forwards and tilted. Flip bars 180 so the forks take up less space. Obviously you can't have any passengers this way, but for solo rides it beats faffing around with the rear wheel.

Good info, when I get home.....bikes go in the basement, no stickers on the car, and we installed Samsung smart things on the bikes just in case

I put the bike into a sleeping bag. It keep dirt on inside, offer protection to bike and car. Also the bikes covered from view.

Get a honda jazz. Get a little axle stand (mtbvans). Screw into piece of wood. Take front wheel off and chuck it in. Loads of space left to chuck kit. Laugh MTBers with big cars covered in racks :P

had to put my frame size 60 road bike in my girlfriends Toyota Yaris. Even taking off both wheels it still didnt fit. Had to ride back with half a bike sticking out into the passenger seat with me bending around it :P

So in my VW up I have to take the fork off to make it even shorter when I want to have space to fit anything else in or want a passenger on the front seat. But, at least I have a bike and a car so why should I complain, I can build it up in a few minutes.

I got some sweet dents on the side of my car from my bike falling off my roof rack on the freeway. Fortunately the bike stayed attached to my car and only the seat was destroyed. It could have been so much worse.

If you use a outside rack... keep the locks closed. I know someone getting his bike stolen at a Red traffic light while he had to stop...

In merica we don’t have a problem. It’s like tossing a coin into a warehouse. Doesn’t even matter, our cars are so big.

With how often bikes are being stolen at gun point these days in my area, carrying my bike on the roof or trunk isn’t an option anymore. Too risky

Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1. Very light2. Solid quality build3. Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected.4. Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)
