Nobody is really self taught, if they are following tutorials, or reading documentations. The only way you can truly be self-taught would be if you opened up a program, pressed all the buttons and see what they do and make some notes. Games design is pretty fun, I used to study Engineering then I chose games design, at first I struggled, but when you find a bunch of tutorials you will pick it up quick.

For me self-taught = learning by my own using only available sources without heading to some private lessons or courses with possibility to talk to a tutor. Googling, solving problems on your own and so on is time consumable and for me it's meaning of self-taught. Just imagine having a friend who has years experience in blender and is willing to help you at any time and also spends time with you to show you a lot of stuff. This would be not self-taught for me.
