- Here's how to play Leonard Cohen's iconic song, Hallelujah in the original key of C major. You'll need these 5 chords: C, A minor, F, G and E7.
Key: C Major
Time Signature: 12/8, but you can feel it in a big 4 (meaning you can still count 1 2 3 4)
Form: Intro, Verse, Chorus (repeat Verse & Chorus x4)
Strumming pattern options:
1.) D (Simple downstrokes)
2.) D DU
3.) Finger style arpeggios

I have a question for you. Could I substitute G7 for G. The transition from F to G7 is easier for me.
Hi Tillie - absolutely, great question. You can definitely substitute G7 for G, especially in the key of C. 😊
The key of C is too low for my voice range. Can you please transpose to a higher key. Thank you.
