  • Been pretty busy last week, but I decided to play with the accelerometer module and made this Altitude indicator. I hope someone will find this useful.
    Parts used:
    LilyGO T-Display AMOLED Touch : www.lilygo.cc/O9VrA9
    LIS3DSH high-performance three-axis "nano" accelerometer
    CODE: github.com/VolosR/altitudeInd...

Nice project. One little problem. The artificial horizon - Y axis is good but the X axis (roll) is reversed. the horizon should stay horizontal. Roll on 100K !

If you use a temperature, pressure and humidity module, you can also have altitude reading added to the altimeter in the top right. The airspeed indicator (the gauge on the bottom left) should be on the top left. If you google "aircraft instruments six pack" you will see the standard setup of instruments. Sorry, couldn't help it, I am a pilot. ;) I hope you don't mind. Love your channel, I see that you like to play with Lillygo T-Display S3 a lot. I can't make mine work for anything. It seems a bit wrong... when you turn left, the artificial horizont "turns right"(in fact it must be aligned with the horizond, because it is the plane that turns-roll/bank).
Yours turn in the same direction of the "bank angle"/roll angle.
That is good you are not a aviation instruments provider. But the thing is cool.

@@VolosProjects It doesn't matter which board, I bought many types from Lilygo because of your videos. I suppose the regular S3 is what most people have. I'm interested in how to do a countdown, such that meanwhile, for example, a bar decreases or a circle diminishes, etc. I guess many could make use of this sort of thing, whether in the kitchen while baking or for other types of timers, for example, when the expiration time is approaching, then a LED turns on and when it expires, a piezo, etc. What I wrote, unfortunately, sometimes slows down the process and doesn't measure the time accurately, of course, it might be because in the meantime, based on your code, it also displays the time from the internet...

This is sooo cool! Will have to look up and get the sensor. Adding a GPS to the mix to have a directional arrow showing you the path and maybe an overlay of controlled airspace would be a cherry on top of the cake or at least per second logging of altitude and coordinates in a log file would be a killer.
If I may point out that you need to invert your logic on left and right banks. You have it inverted. Left bank would put your left wing in a dirt if that makes sense.
Do you think esp32 could handle some basic maps?

I love this project! Made me think of another idea you might be able to contribute to. I'm thinking of an absolute altimeter, that is, one that shows the height above the ground rather than the height above sea level. I bought you a coffee so you can think about this one ( - : Most people have heard the "50... 40... 30" feet above the runway callouts heard in passenger liners. That is good, but what can the pilots look at that shows this information? I've tried to design something for Makerfab's 1.3" touch screen but I'm not very good at screen design. You, on the other hand are quite the expert! So since you say these type of projects boost your viewer count maybe you can think of something for a future project. Thanks for everything you do.

  • @dr_jaymz
    @dr_jaymz 5 місяців тому

Nice, I have done an attitude indicator using an AHRS and its a lot more basic - in an actual aircraft you cannot use accelerometers for pitch and roll. When an aircraft banks at any angle, a pendulum would always point direct to the floor, because you are turning in a circle when you bank and thus the forces cancel (unless you are flying out of balance). Similarly for acceleration and deceleration, if you use an accelerometer you would think you were tilting back for acceleration and forward for deceleration. And that is because gravity isn't a force its an acceleration. An AHRS fuses data from gyros with accelerometers as well as magnetic flux to maintain its place in space - which is tricky. Luckly you can buy one that does all of that and gives you the figures and you just draw them.

That would be cool to put in a fpv rc plane. If you could figure out how to make that function with rc plane electronics you could probly sell it for a decent price. Someone else sells something similar for $400 but isn't nearly as nice. If you could get real time sensors to display altitude, air speed and attitude it would be perfect. Or get it to communicate with fpv flight controller via uart or sbus or other rc plane protocols

Very Nice and I'm looking for months to have this 'RC scale cockpit' to use it in FPV. This is so awome!!
Indeed a reverse of the roll is needed,
Is there a possibility to add a gps with flux receiver to have speed and direction?
A barometer to have pressure altitude?
Will it still work if I put it in a plane, because accelerometers are fine to calibrate but it should work of gyroscopes.
Because if you make a coordinated turn for example the roll indicator will indicate a level situation although you're banking.
In this case, using only a accelerometer it makes a turn and slip indicator.

Another beautiful project (you have excellent UI skills !). Which dev env do you use ? Im having trouble getting these recent projects to compile. For several years I have used the PC Arduino IDE application for older ESPs. There are now options for web IDE and PlatformIO. I have bought several of these newer devices you have shown us (LilyGo should pay you a commision :-) ) and for all of them I have failed to get the correct libraries installed into the IDE and worse can no longer build my legacy code. I feel I need to start from scratch or have alternate IDEs and be able to configure different library locations ? I understand the board manager and location of libraries but it seems the specifics of lvgl paths for different boards can interfere with each other. Appreciate your suggestion.

Just install esp32 boards in arduino Ide, version lower than 3.0 and then you can install libraries in libraries folder by hand, and dont update them.

hello, sorry for late answer, sprite need lots of memory, so largest sprite s3 can handle is 400x400, you can use few smalers, or you can push same sprite on diferent plasec on screen, it is hard to explain, so basicly you draw content of sprite and push it to lef corner, next you draw another content and push it to anoother corner, FPS will suffer but do you realy need 30 fps. i used that aproach in this video ua-cam.com/video/4-wQCipEX4A/v-deo.htmlsi=jE0_cF-hEGaH1VV9

You do amazing graphics. Your attitude indicator has inverse reference, left wing down should show left wing lower in reference to the horizon. Another use case for this in off road vehicles would be an inclinometer (tilt and angle). Thanks for your hard work bringing these displays and code examples!

To all the Pilots that want to use this: Don't ! You will need actual airspeed and rate of turn to get the bank angle correct. Otherwise it will level out when you are in a normal turn. Likewise, but to a lesser extent for pitch angle. This because the sensors are just accelerometers / gravity sensors vs true gryo's so they are good detecting movement. In a steady turn / pitch (1G) they will null out.

Sorry Sir, but your display is a horizon indicator, called an "artificial horizon", and is used to determine the hotizontality of an aircraft in space. Altitude is the measure of a flying object's height above sea level

I did loaded the Adafruit Sensor & LIS3DH but the attempt to compile still lists the temp_sensor.h file as missing. I don't know which library that error is talking about to load it as there are so many others also listed when I search.

I have not been able to find a tablet since the HTC Jetstream that has a REAL compass so that I can use Google sky map... With that tablet, if I attached it to a telescope, the tablet could tell me what star the scope was pointed at...
If you could find a tilt sensor that has a true compass in it and somehow make my non-compass tablet think it has a compass, I could use google sky map again.
