Well, i agree with you that they were more like brothers. But, to answer your question why people shipped them I think it started with the prank Dylan and Thomas did were they almost kissed each other. We, have to understand this: Most of those fans were teens or young adults at the time. Most of them fell in love with Thomas and also Dylan and were fantasising about them, witch is normal in that age. Most of them knew they couldn't have them in real life, so what to do about that? Yes, we pair Dylan and Thomas together instead, to make us feel more comfort and some sort of relief and less hurt when we can't have them ourselves. At some point both Dylan and Thomas understood that and was well aware of both Newtmas and Dylmas. They even said in a couple of interviews that they played along with that and thought it was fun. They never seemed bothered with that. And to be fair, they also said that it's their own fault because they started it themself.
