I have owned DS and ID since 1972, and I never want anything else (except perhaps an SM...). Today I drive a DS 23 IE Pallas - 74, which really is my dream car. Greetings from Sweden!

Been a DS owner for decades and this was a pretty good guide. In fact I can´t remember anyone doing it better. If I have to say something I would say that the engines not only is "good" but that they are incredibly good. They can take abuse and high mileage better than the classic Volvo "redblocks" and some of Mercedes old engines. Yes I said it, but I say that as a Swede who own classic Volvo´s and Mercedes´s too. About the rust. They are kinda "different" with that too. Of course the classic salt-rust is there as any other car. But by far, the worst D-models I have seen is from leaking roof seal. The roof frame is like a gutter which leads all water via the C-pillar and parcel shelf down to the VERY important structure around the rear trailing arm mounts. If it goes bad there, it´s really hard to get it right. Other than that, the structure of the car is mostly straight metal. In my experience it´s much easier to do rust repair on a DS than on a Volvo 240. And the hydraulics... The short story: If you don´t want hydraulics, get a bicycle. If you realize that all cars have hydraulics, why not get the best there is? In 30 years, I haven´t had any major problems with the hydraulics on a DS. Spheres, fluid service and bleeding brakes is the only thing my cars ever needed. Overall, with all the kinds of cars I had over the years, the DS has been by far the most reliable. And that´s not only me saying that as an enthusiast with a garage queen. I have been driving crazy amounts of KM in different DS´s including a lot of "beaters" back in the day when they were cheap.
Anyone capable of servicing any old classic car will learn the DS´s few quirky bits really fast. And as with any classic, the more you pay for a good example, the happier you will be in the long run. If everything is alright, it will be (yes actually) pretty quiet and the suspension comfort should blow you away completely, otherwise something is wrong. And it should also handle surprisingly well. These things are way faster in the corners than most people think. But with suspension spheres from a CX and/or crappy low-spec tyres it will not get that crisp response they had when new.
And yes, you dare! You can thank me later. Best thing I ever did was getting my first DS back in the day. It was of course crap, but it never let me down once. Instead it started a life long relationship with the best car ever made. The one I have today is a DS 23 familiale which had over a million KM on the clock (old taxi) when I got it decades ago. It has been dragging around really big caravans, it has been my company car. My (now adult) kids grew up in it and it has been to different countries and hauled a lot of cargo.

I understand that some of the older Citroen mechanics have never seen the insides of the durable 4 cylinder because it's so reliable.

It has a very bright and "angry" red "STOP"-light if the hydraulics fail! So you wont miss that!

It was a mistake to attach that wireless microphone to that jacket, you’ve destroyed the sound and rendered this video unwatchable as a result. All you can hear is SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH.

I love these videos, but the microphone noise and you speaking quite quietly and quickly make this video really hard to watch.

@@alancrisp1582 as someone born in 1997 I'd consider myself very lucky to own a a Citroen Xantia, Saxo or even a late build 2CV at this stage

Yes and no. The first DS was not quite as beautiful, and the first all broke down because of the LHS.
