Thank you, this is one of those very rare complex tutorials that doesn't skip a crucial step at any point.
I'm so glad I found your channel! This was the best thing I've done to my chromebook
I just installed it. It's literally the best thing I've ever done to my Chromebook.
yeah im going to do it rn because I can't anything with this chromrbook. I mean not anything but it's VERY limited
Just got through the installation process. Normally I'm having bad luck with tutorials like these, however this one was super accurate and enormously helpful!
Thanks for the video. I just installed Gallium on my Acer C710. There were a few things I had to do differently to flash the firmware and the Gallium install crashed a few times until I re-wrote to another usb stick. Thanks for helping me get this done!
I'm trying to do the same and just noticed firmware update being necessary, do you have a guide you used for that part?
Installing GalliumOS dual boot as I watch this. And it just finished up.
Excellent!
It really worked fantastic!! I got my Chromebook with Gallium OS up & running!! thank you!!
Good shit man. Works like a champ. This was my dad's Chromebook and he recently passed. I didn't want to trash it and didn't like the crouton method so now I have a little travel friendly laptop for entertainment. I'm a Ubuntu/Pi user so this fits in great. Thanks again...
I just installed GalliumOS on my Acer chromebook an hour ago. The instructions in this video are clear and precise and I was able to follow it and install this great linux product. To me it is far and away a better choice for my chromebook. It is snappy and quick and just what I needed. I was going to sell my chromebook but this is a keeper now. Thank you DB Tech!
Thank you very much for your video sir. This is probably the most comprehensive tutorial video I can find
Top Notch!!!!, Great step by step video, you're 1 of a special kind,
Thanks for the tutorial, man, you such a legend, it working on chromebook almost 1 year, i used galliumos to play game, big thanks for you
Super helpful video with straightforward well explained clear instructions, thanks for your work.
Now I know why you said to use Gallium instead of Ubuntu. This is definitely the way to go. Great video!
Thanks! I'm a big fan of Gallium on Chromebooks. Only problem is that updates come out kinda slow for Gallium, but I don't use my Chromebook much unless I'm travelling so it's not a huge issue for me.
I appreciate this video a lot. It still works. I am somewhat incensed that this much crap is necessary to rescue old Chromebooks from the landfill. Google should make this easier for the razor-thin percentage of us who want to prevent Chromebooks from becoming e-waste. In fact, they should prompt users of EOL Chromebooks to do it proactively. At which point, they can wash their hands of support issues.
But we all know exactly why they don't do this.
Thanks for leaving this 4 year old video up. It is now 2022, and this does the trick.
Hey. Followed the video and have Galliumos installed on my Acer c720 Hoo ah! Thanks bubba. This is a huge benefit for me. I need the computer to study and the only hardware I could afford was a refurbished Chromebook. Galliumos turned the hardware into a computer. Thanks again.
Excellent tutorial, thank you.
Worked like a dream. Many thanks for adding value and longevity to my Acer C720!
thank you. other text based tutorials were incomplete. this was flawless
i'd like to know if you used the same text for bios given in the description and did it work?
im a 14yo with zero knowledge about computers and Chromebooks or anything like this and i cant believe i did it. i made the bootable usb and downloaded the gallium os on my Chromebook thankyou sm for this 😭😭❤️
this was a great video and it totally still works!!
I did a lot of reading on the subject of a Chromebook with Linux on it. I was torn between Kubuntu and Xbuntu but GalliumOS kept coming up in my searches. I have a GNAWTY Acer that I got new for a sweet deal. I forgot to reset the BIOS to boot from the Hard Drive (LOL) and thought I screwed up. I backtracked and realized my mistake and now I have GalliumOS Bismuth on my Acer Cromebook 11. Bye Bye Google BLOATWARE. No more data mining me through my devices.
Thank you sincerely for this video. It was informative in the right way and i accomplished another Linux Installation and on a Chromebook no less! Watching my NEW minilaptop updating is a sight that warms my heart!!!
THANK YOU AGAIN for the instructions. The online instructions did not get the commands right and here they were the right commands to execute the installation from a flash drive.
Just one thing, closed captioning is a nuisance. Closed captioning made the command 'sudo poweroff' to be 'pseudo poweroff.' Big tech derp right there. Sometimes technology just does not make things easier like it is supposed to.
works fine on my chrome book 3, no issues thus far, all media buttons work. (y)
@DB Tech just an FYI. . .the gallium wiki states: "Custom firmware builds for some models were previously available from CoolStar and John Lewis. That firmware is no longer recommended nor supported (by us or them)." You might consider updating this video to reflect that. The Mr. Chromebox firmware builds are the only ones still recommended.
hey, when i types in the cd;bash thing successfully and i pressed enter to supposedly bring it to the seven options, but it says that snappy isn’t supported by this script at all
My dude... you are a F*ing legend! worked perfectly on my Acer acer c731 chromebook. Thanks so much for the tutorial
Just got the big FU from google last night saying my chrome book is being supported until June 2022. I will be using this walkthrough very soon. Thank you!!
So. something to think about with this method is that, if your device is compatible, there are some quirks that have frustrated people with regards to the boot up process. You might also look at this method: ua-cam.com/video/kXnU_S5ZNJQ/v-deo.html
Make sure to read through the description, though
Thank you so much DB Tech!! Much ❤️
Awesome!!! Followed your instructions and worked like a charm :)
@@DBTechYTHi there.. Only thing i noticed is when i shut off my (former) chromebook and turn on again, it shows the white screen with the verification message on.. So i hit CTRL + L and then ESC.. Do u know if there's a way to always bypass this screen? Other than that is great!
That's just one of the downsides to this method. Whenever you reboot, it will take a few minutes to go through a system check. You can wait for it to complete and then boot or you can do the CTRL+L thing to bypass it, but as long as you use this method, you'll have to wait or intervene. You might look at this method: ua-cam.com/video/kXnU_S5ZNJQ/v-deo.html
Just be sure to plug in your GalliumOS USB when the video says to plug in a Windows USB.
@@DBTechYT ahhhh... Perfect, thanks for your prompt reply!!! Cheers from Vancouver, BC!!
Hello. Great video. I need some help. I have exactly the same Chromebook model Acer C720. I followed everything on your tutorial and everything worked until the part where GalliumOS installs. My problem is that after the installer asks to restart the chrome; when it restarts it gives me a message saying OS / USB missing yet, the USB still there and I am just supposed to be waiting for the message saying remove USB like in your tutorial. But it just said OS missing. What can I do to resolve this issue. Please let me know. Thank you.
still helpful after 3 years. Thanks a million
@@DBTechYT I just got Gallium OS installed on my 2014 Chromebook. I'm running multiple apps instead of just chrome. It was possible just because of you. Thanks again from Pakistan.
I've got the Acer CB3-531. Followed all steps and when trying to do Ctrl L, it just beeps twice and does nothing
I have an Acer cb515-1ht that I want to try this on, but I cannot connect to my wireless in developer mode. Is there a way to flash the bios without being connected (like from a flash drive or SDcard)?
Thank you very much for the help. If I
Didn't know about this os, the chrome os expiration date would have been an issue for me.
hey did you use the same text given for BIOS in the description and did it work
@@laiba4630 what I did was boot it from a usb, and when you boot the os up for the 1st time, there should be an icon that allows you to install gallium os as your main os.
Hello, I have a Acer C720 and installed Gallium OS and it was working fine till I let someone use ut and they did not enter "Cntrl L" on time and now I cannot get it back. Please advise. Thank you
So I went through the tutorial completely but when I got to the side command it said use "dev_boot_altfw" is there another way
when I enter the boot menu I can't boot from the usb. When I select the usb it just shows me a white underscore on the screen and nothing else, neither the grub nor the distro's installation process. What can I do?
Big ups to you man. thank you
I’ve tried this a few times and get stuck when I put in the bootable usb with Gallium and hit ctrl +L, it either beeps twice and continues to chrome or it will open up a black screen that os blank, no boot options. Do you know what I might be doing wrong? Do I have to remove the WP screw?
gallium os supports my chromebook, but on the crosh part where you type the Johnlewis thingy, it says that it doesnt support coral. is there a different way i can do this?
When i boot into Gallium OS it has a blue screen and i can't do anything i've tried doing it again and it has the same issue please help.
in the part of selecting the boot device, I press the usb number and the message "booting from hard disk..." appears.
Would you help me ?
I am going through all the steps, but I've just got stuck after entering developer mode and command console, after typing "shell" in step 2, I try to do a bios modification through "cd;bash ...", but it throws an error that the SSL certificate of the server is expired. I tried to use http address instead of https, and it initially accepts it, but then in the next screen I select option 1 (RW_LEGACY) it throws an error about expired SSL cert of the server once more. Any alternatives or solution to this? Many thanks
after i do cd;bash and so on it asks for a password. Please help thanks
thanks this really helps. I have roughly 100 chromebooks to do this to so ill be busy for the next couple months or so. PLZ RESPOND IF YOU GET THIS
Ive been using galium since it first came up. I was a windows user before so now i have a dualboot setup on my i3 acer chromebook (m2 ssd 4gb ram). Galium is so much snappier and more functional than windows that i rarely use win10 nowadays. I took a bit to get arround new system but Gallium works almost flawlesly including all chromebook function keys and hardware support. Built in synaptic manager is a bit rough but you can still use console version of aptitude and most known software have debian packages available so its not big of a deal. I love multidesktop feature! - a must have for multitasking user. I got took over from windows to debian because of gallium distro.
That's really cool! I only found about it recently and love having it on this Chromebook.
Hi sir,
I just installed galliumos on my Chromebook, but it can only boot while press ctrl+L ,any solution to self boot? Kindly help
I booted Gallium on the same Chromebook model as yours (following the tutorial step by step) but when trying to boot it again, I'm getting "Chrome OS is missing or damaged. Please insert a recovery usb stick or SD card." Idk what to do..
I have the HP Chromebook 14-x010wm I can't fond out what download I need... Please help....
is it possible to install Waydroid to Gallium? also couldn't find a link to the separate video mentioned at the end regarding mute, volume buttons not working...
bro ... እናመሰናለን ... meaning thank you in Amharic... IT WORKS!!!!
THANKS TO THIS I WAS ABLE TO INSTALL DEBIAN ON WRITE PROTECTED OLD CHROMEBOOK, THANKS
Hello, I want to ask for your help if it possible. At the moment I have a Chromebook acer with Gallium OS. I had to change the bios to install this OS, but I have a question, in this moment, exist a way to restore the original Chrome OS bios ? I make this question because if I use a Bootable usb with the ChromeOS, my Chromebook read it, but doesn't charge the next steps for the instalation. This have a fix ?
THANK YOU SO MUCH DB TECH!!!!!!! EVERYTHING WORKED ON MY ACER CHROMEBOOK 14. THIS GUY IS LEGIT THANKS 10000000X!!!!!!🥂🥂🥂🥂
also 1 question: is it okay to delete gallium os and its files off the usb drive i used to install it? thanks
After it is installed on your Chromebook, you can remove the USB from your Chromebook and do whatever you'd like with the USB.
Thanks great tutorial. I have a Lenovo Flex 5 CB. It's comet lake i3 so I tried the Skylake bios. Unfortunately got an incompatibility message. I guess it's too new. Good was it was simple to just exit developer mode and go back to normal ChromeOS.
Worked Great, Samsung chromebook 3 Braswell chip
I want to install either Ubuntu or Windows on my acer chromebook 15. But the usual recovery method doesn't work. it doesn't recognize the commands its a R42 model. I tried to remove the write protect screw but its so taut i actually ended up stripping it and now it just won't budge at all. I might just sell the thing and get a windows laptop. if there was an easier way without having to fight with it and not accidently damage it then ill give it a shot but otherwise this OS is soon gonna run out of security updates... They stop updating it sept of next year so Im trying to find and alternate OS to replace it with..
Hi DB Tech I liked your videos because are perfectly explained. I installed the gallium year ago but won't boot it's on the page when it's says chrome OS is missing or damaged and before I was press ctrl+alt+ l and it was working but now won't boot.
Thank u for your videos!!
Hello i got a question will this work for the current model: Acer C83-431-c2QG
thank you for another awesome video i am asking if you may do one for Slax Linux
It would be the exact same process. Just create a Slax Linux USB and install the same way as this
hey, can I just boot it from a USB drive with no wasting storage because My Chromebook is 32gb I have a USB drive I want to boot from so I can still have 32gb left?
can i leave my right protect screw enabled
Would you try installing a completely different operating system on your Chromebook?
I’ve tried doing this before with another operating system but I just get an error when I try to modify the bios (I think u are installing a new bios Called seabios tell me if I am wrong) it is pretty late so if u want to help me I will tell you what the error is tomorrow
"I just get an error" doesn't tell me anything. I can't troubleshoot that. What error are you getting?
I also had some issues with Sea BIOS so I had to use a different link in shell and it worked just fine. From what I understand it is not compatible with all chrome books but most. What I recommend is try finding different ones to try until you find one that works. When I did this process to get linux on my chrome book it took me some time to find the right combination of bios and favor of linux to work just right. Good luck with the process and have fun doing it.
But to answer this question I wanted to run Mint but I could not get the left mouse click to work with the track pad or usb mouse even. Doing LFS (Linux from scratch) would be pretty cool
For me, the keyboard originally didn't work. This was fixed for me by plugging in a USB keyboard to complete the install, then by running sudo apt install linux-image-4.12.0-galliumos in the terminal
During the installation an error came up and it presented this
can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
I tried to wipe my USB and flash GalliumOS again on it but to no avail :( Been like this for weeks
I use a HP 11 G5, hope someone will see this :(
Hi! How can I change the bootloader installation location to be another usb drive that I have plugged for an expanded memory? I know that in this video, you go with the regular installation, but I believe that I have to change something when it asks for installation type -> something else?
Don't try to install an operating system on a USB drive. It's not going to work well if at all.
I have Lenovo n22. Which GalliumOS would be best. Thank you for any help.
What does it truly do? Can you download apps and documents like for oculus quest with this?
I think manjaro xcfe should make the volume buttons work but i will try this one may be better for battery life that i need this very much also if you got any addition to battery life apps that i can add to gallium os i use manjaro as desktop and is very good
Tutorial is Perfekt, but how do i move Verification is Off when i start my Chromebook ? Its annoyi g every single time to press ctrl+D..do you have any tips for.me ?My chromebook is Acer c720
Hello, I have the Lenovo N23 Windows edition, and I don't know how to install it. I tried installing it directly from an USB but it doesn't start up Live Image.
If it's already got windows on it, you should be able to just plug in a GalliumOS usb and reboot but I can't verify that as I don't have that device
When I upgraded the C720's internal SSD "dev_boot_usb" and "dev_boot_legacy" got set to 0 again. I had to restore Chrome OS. Is there anyway to keep the settings to 1 when the battery gets disconected?
I don't think there is. I believe it has something to do with a jumper or something that happens with the bottom cover. When you remove the bottom, it resets. I hate it when that happens on mine.
I have a New Chromebook Which is the forward button?
Thank you for your tutorial . it's perfect on a old chromebook HP stream 14 full fonctionnality on galliumOS .Juste one question is-it possible to disable on boot up the. CTRL+L or it's necessary to flash the BIOS with new firmware.
Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do with this firmware. Take a look at this method of installing: ua-cam.com/video/kXnU_S5ZNJQ/v-deo.html
It was originally about installing Windows, but once you modify the BIOS/ROM, you can install basically any 32/64 bit operating system with it. Make sure to use the alternate script in the blog post as it is better maintained these days than the script I show in the video.
I have a acer chrome book 15 cb3-532 how do u find out how to find out how it was made
You need to figure out what processor you've got. Then figure out what architecture it's built on (Haswell, Braswell, etc.) then go here to make sure that your processor is compatible: johnlewis.ie/custom-Chromebook-firmware/rom-download/
Your antivirus may have a fit because the site has a cryptocurrency miner on it that you can turn off if you want. At the time of writing this comment, the site has no virus that I'm aware of.
da school chromebook lookin good right there 😏
hey, just a quick question, can you use the Chromebook Recovery Utility tool to flash the OS onto the USB? it worked for regular Ubuntu. but does it work for GalliumOS?
When I keyed in the line with 'johnlewis' I got the error message
Curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'https'
Are you connected to the internet? I was able to download the .sh file just a moment ago with no issues.
Do i need to install the write protection sccrew to install this?
bro, I have a problem, I followed all the steps but when the distro is already being installed I get the installer has failed
I'm running appolo lake and just can't get to make it work :/
Is there any way to boot straight into galliumos without having to press ctrl+l at the os verification screen and select the mmc?
When I typed the Sudo crosssystem command it said command not found
I got all the way through the installation then update. That was an amazing tutorial! Unfortunately I hit a hitch when the power shut off on my chrome book and when it turned back on it said it said chrome os is missing or damaged with no sign of gallium. Is there anything I can do now? I’m trying to get chrome book recovery utility to work but it’s crashing every single time it begins to write to the flash drive. So right now my Toshiba chrome book 2 (swanky) is completely stuck.
Not sure what went wrong, but it seems like you need to create a Chromebook recovery USB and reset your Chromebook back to factory and will need to reinstall Gallium if you want.
First off, GREAT VIDEO! Seriously! However I do have one question... does it work on a Samsung chromebook 3 exynos. It might not be able to work on my device, would it?
Do you need to do all those shenanigans every time you turn your computer on? ctrl+l, esc and option 1?
Worked flawlessly for me too. This is the second time I have used your excellent tutorials to resurrect an old chromebook. The latest one having been bought only 3 years ago as new and the AUE expired this month. I hate throwing good hardware away - so I hope this gives it some more life. Thanks again
