It seems the gradient banding is only a problem if you don't use the gradient tool. Using it gives you the powerful Dither option that destroys the banding almost completely. Soooo satisfying. Great tutorial thank you :)
Wow amazing detail and explination. Superb! Glad to see content based on PS 2020, thank you for taking the time to pull this together, much appreciated and well done.
@@brianfromsecane387 Hi Brian! For me, I knew as this video came up on top of the search I did for PS2020 UA-cam videos. I also recognized the menu layout and some of the features that 2020 has. I don't disagree that it's frustrating, software changes so often nowadays. Be well.
If you want the rectangle over the image you would have to turn the visibility on for the layer containing the rectangle. You could then change the transparency style and opacity settings to determine how the gradient interacts with the image. You could also adjust the opacity in the gradient settings. If you wanted the gradient to be behind the image, move the gradient layer below the image layer. Hope that helps!
In the gradient window, there is a symbol that looks like a clock with one hand and a text field next to it that is probably showing '90' . That shows the angle of the gradient. If you change the value to 0 or 180 it will change the gradient to horizontal. Hope that helps
Sometimes when I use gradient and applying the second time, it adds, it keeps adding instead of resetting from the start. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. When you say it adds, do you mean it adds the previous gradient style when you create a new shape? Photoshop will automatically remember the fill and stroke styles from the previously selected shape. You can select the basic gradient from the fill options before you draw your shape and that will fix it. I hope that helps.
@@solopress It adds to the same shape. It behaves like a painting on the wall, when you apply the paint layer after layer. I found out why. If I select a gradient with transparency it acts like painting, the more I apply darker it gets. if no transparency when it applies as a new gradient.
There may be a few ways of doing this but you could try creating a long rectangle filled with a linear gradient. Then rasterize the layer and curve the shape using the warp tool to create a ribbon effect.
Thank you for the tutorial but I have a problem and that is when I want to use the gradient tool I get an error saying that I cannot use it because the contents of the layer is not editable
This has helped me sooooo much. Thank you. The given information was very clear and i can really use this now. I only wonder how i can make a gradiant with black and white blocks at the end. So from blue to blocks. Is this also an option?
Thanks! Amazing! I could not figure out how to change the color of the gradient. It's hidden within the small slider handle, you double click on the handle that is designed to be dragged... obviously! I'm sure the designers of Photoshop got an enormous laugh out of hiding that option!
how do I change the properties of a gradient when I draw it using the gradient tool? This tutorial seems like its only for gradients contained within shapes?
Thanks for the tutorial. I wanted to begin drawing pixelart stuff and I had to check out how to do gradients on photoshop. On every other program it is incredibly easy, but on photoshop it is truly a mess. You should not need a tutorial on a tool that is supposed to be intuitive. Thant's when you know the program is badly designed.
I'm watching this 1/12/22 and it's out of date. When I click on the layer thumbnail a completely different window comes up and I'm stuck. Can't learn anything when Photoshop 23.1.0 has completely different panels. ADOBE, STOP CHANGING THINGS!
Hello!! This is a great tutorial! I was wondering though about the foreground to transparent type... I'm trying to use it but it remains white where it's supposed to be transparent... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... Would like your help please! Thank you ☺️
Hi Matthew. The gradient shouldn't change when you move the object. The only instance I could think of where that would happen is if you had a gradient applied to an object using a clipping mask. Hope that helps.
Ok but can we just appreciate the microphone? That audio was so crisp. Thanks for the video! Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
This is the best tutorial on gradients I've ever seen. Excellent job!

How the heck am I to know it is PS2020? I am so annoyed by PS videos that are using the latest when I have a 5year old program.

I'm not aware there is one. Please let us know if you solve it. Thanks
This is by far the best tutorial I've seen for using the gradient tool in PS! I have watched several only to end up frustrated. Thank you for this!

Great so far, but I don't see those tools in my PS tool bar.
