Among the several ways to conduct Tchaikovsky, this quintessentially Russian performance, along with those of Svetlanov, Eisenzopf, and Gergiev, is to me the most compelling. On UA-cam there is a live performance of Reiner conducting the Fourth, which tops anything he did from the Russian repertoire in a studio. Monteux was terrific, and I always have a warm spot in my heart for Dr. Klemperer's 5th, which while understandably sounding German, turns that trait into a virtue by showing us, as always, something we had not yet perceived. Hoomeyow!!
This movie was taken in June 1978 in the Grosse Musikvereinsaal in Vienna. My wife and I were in the audience. In the second half they played the Shostakovich Fifth. At the end, the clapping continued even after the orchestra had left the stage. Mravinsky eventually came out, and took a single bow. Only then did everyone leave.
Lol the cinematography is ridiculous here. It shows audience way more frequently than the musicians, which none of the solo playing gets a single close shot. Good old Russian filming skills. Unbelievably fantastic performance, though.
Pure music no ego …sincerity enormous skills and calculated inspiration
Mravinsky no ego? My man, you should read up. Great musician, no doubt, but with self-importance to match.
Probably the best conductor for Tchaikovsky's symphonies.
Yes, the greatest russian conductor!
Simply the best
Indeed especially considering the 1956 recordings of the 5th and the 6th symphonies while the 1957 recording for the 4th symphony is highly mandatory
The best. Mravinsky played the orchestra like Ashkenazy plays the piano.
Incomparable ❤
he is my favorite interpreter of this work. thank you for this deeply appreciated post.
Maestro ! Grazie!
Looking at his hands you could hear the music exactly like the orchestra plays even if there was no sound.
people who were in the concert hall must be the luckiest person in the world
Absolute masterclass on conducting.
1st mov. 00:40
2nd mov. 14:09
3rd mov. 25:50
Finale 31:10
thanks

True Master.
this symphony must be mravinsky's best specialty.
Beautiful..thanks
His favourite Tchaikovsky symphony indeed with the 5th symphony of Chostakovitch, the best 2 symphonies ever written in his own wise understanding
Vitali Bujanovsky Solo Horn
Absolument titanesque...

Not Vienna...but Leningrad Philharmonia
This is not the Grosse Musikvereinsaal. It’s not in Vienna at all. Great performance.
It was in Leningrad (Saint-Petersburg), not in Vienna. I didn't see you in the audience, but your wife was definitely there. We've noticed her.
What a hall!
Philharmonia hall in Leningrad

😀
More like the orchestra 😂
