- Polygamy is largely looked down on in Indonesia, where about 86 percent of Muslims oppose it-but the husbands and wives who practice it believe it’s the ideal form of marriage, and they’re ardent about convincing folks to think the same way. Riski Ramdani has dedicated himself to making the controversial arrangement more mainstream, and he’s gathered a pretty passionate following. But he’s still facing harsh, widespread criticism that polygamy, at its core, is just a form of abuse.
VICE Indonesia met up with Ramdani, his two wives, and their children in West Java for a look inside their unconventional marriage, and to hear why they support the practice, as well as the struggles they face. Then we spoke to a scholar who studies polygamy and a woman who left her polygamist marriage to hear how-for many women-the practice can be traumatizing.

@@nnn-v6wI am not well versed of what quran stated about women and polyandry, however, in biological stands point I can see that women would have a difficulty in determining who is the dad, as you mention, and yes relating it to religion, as long as the person is known as your biological dad, you can't marry him, but you still can marry your step father (if the ladies remarried/and the daughter is not raised by the stepdad; however not in case of polyandry so not sure*), in case he divorced your mother one day so theres different debate to talk about the "awrah/modesty" within the child with his other father. But technology can prevent this by paternity test, tho, to be honest how many people have money and time to do the testing, especially coming from not as advanced country right?
Other biological factor that I can see is women can only reproduce/pregnant every 7-9 months, taking into account of pregnancy and only one sperm from "any of the partner" that getting conceived. In reproduction it is disadvantages for the other men to wait for the women baby to be born, and well to wait their time to be able to successfully fertilize with the woman. That's why, polyandry is not advisable. Social stand coming with how the men pay for the child support, which husband gonna pay for it, of let say she have two husband, and who gonna take the last name, etc in which can be very detrimental in the kids future. I am only saying in the context of reproduction and also in this situation marriage in Islam.

Also, the woman marriage according to islam, only the first husband is consider the real father, so it would mostly be disadvantages for the kids to be label illegitimate child, this is in accordance to shariah law. It would affect the kids throughout their life if they live in muslim countries from schooling to marriage especially "daughter" they need a dad/dad's families* in accordance to shariah as guidance during her marriage in most case.

The ratio between man and women was very high. In Islam if a man has more than one wife he has to treat them equally otherwise he will be punished in the afterlife hence it's a rare practice these days.

As an Indonesian Muslim I just want to say that these kinds if people are of the minority. As the person in the video mentioned 86% OPPOSE polygamy. God has permitted polygamy, but keep in mind the state of things at the time of Prophet Muhammad. It was a dangerous time for an unmarried woman. My personal belief is that polygamy should ONLY be practiced in order to protect the women, as a LAST RESORT. In this day and age, women are allowed to work and some even gain more money than the average man. That’s why I believe the practice is not necessary. It is a husband’s duty to curb his desires for other women periodt😤
We are now given the opportunity to become independent people, why the heck would anyone want to be someone’s second, third, or fourth wife? There are so many other things you can do to worship god and become a better Muslim.

There is no need/value for all the reasons/opinions/justifications. Polygyny is clearly declared optional in the Quran. Do it if you qualify and want to, don't if you don't.
The prophet pbuh did it and some of his best companions did it, he didn't discourage anyone.

As a Muslim, polygamy isn't a religious practice that grants you a pass to heaven or a practice that will make you a better Muslim it is something that is permissible meaning it is permitted but it's not necessarily a holy action, polygamy is only to be practiced if you treat each wife the same, same amount time together, same gifts etc. Also another thing is polygamy is meant to be used in times when there is a shortage of Muslim men for Muslim women to marry or to help women in poverty. And if a Muslim woman does not want her husband to be married to another woman while married to her they can put in the marriage contract that polygamy is not allowed in their marriage and if the man breaks that promise it would be extremely bad.
That man didn't understand the purpose of allowing polygamy. It is allowed (in Islam) because in many societies, a widow is often left without any ressources and can't work. So being a second wife is a way to escape this dragic fate.
But that man married another woman only for lust and to avoid cheating, as if God didn't give him any self control. A wife is a partner, not a toy.

Moreover, his wives may have agreed to be in this situation because of their upbringing. Indeed his second wife even said her father pressured her to. Rusty Shacklevert nowadays they actually do make accurate DNA test especially if you have the DNA of the people in question that makes it a hundred percent guaranteed actually(and they have pretty cheap mail in ones that are just as accurate when you have everyone's DNA sample) or if they were that concerned about it they could switch off every month and use the calendar technique when trying to conceive! that way they could know who the father is 100% without a DNA test.

In Islam, God forbids the occurrence of a lady being forced into marriage and the woman has great value. Maybe I’m missing something here but one would think that if God really intended for polygamy to be the norm, he would have made sure there were far more women than men on this planet. The natural sex ratio at birth is 105 boys per 100 girls so I would love to know how polygamy would work out on a world wide scale.

Most women in polygamous relationship do it for financial reasons , the man usually have lot of money and the girl are poor , so it win win situations for them , the girl family just wanted her to marry to rice guy so they can feel they done their part , while the girl may have just done what her family told her but if she did not marry him with her high school degree what kind life or work can she do , she will end up marrying someone in end and living in provity , so her family thought about all that before marrying her up to the richest guy to knock their door .

He's doing polygamy and marrying widows because their husbands are died in war and they need someone to protect them from any harms(I understand how these widows will be exposed to many kinds of harms, especially in old times when the logic of the people is not as progressive as modern times and the stigma about widows). For Aisyah RA case, I know she's still underage when Rasulullah SAW married her but he waited until Aisyah RA reach her adulthood to really start a family with her and never even touch her before that.

personally i don't think there's anything wrong with polygamy, if you have the ability to share your love with more than one person then by all means find someone who is like-minded and be happy being yourselves. however it seems that the women in these cases were either not consenting, or had to be coerced, it is not their wish to be polygamous and yet they were made to believe they must be in order to fulfill their duty as pious devotees. the relationship of the first family seemed very nice but the foundation of that relationship is built on a narrow interpretation of scripture, and i think that makes it deceitful. the idea that it is only okay for a man to feel an urge-- not even love for another woman, but a wish to be adulterous-- to be with another woman, that they believe in logic but use ungrounded reasoning, that the same people who use this reasoning will tout that their faith respects women the most but doesn't consider them capable of rational thought, is probably not the type of thought that any god would reward. the concept of polygamy is fine, it is the conditions it is practiced under that are not fine.

@Wasim Ahmed while polygamy is not 100% bad , like rather then man cheating on his wife he can take in another wife , rather then couple hiring sorgatte woman to carry their children in case of infertility and rather then guy divorcing his infertile wife he can marry another while keeping both , their many social problems that might be solved with limited polygamy and woman can get divorced if she not like it , so I think it ok .
me personally I would not be able to tolerate polygamous relationship with my husband BUT I know their many women who not mind sharing their husband whether it be cuz they need husband support financially or ok cuz they have problems like infertility .
