I used to do a bit of traveling, and one thing I've learned; when a customs person asks you for something, anything, you do it. No fuss. Just give them what they want. You get where you need to go much quicker.

Very dangerous... looking at the TSA today I can see parallels. That's why: there are limits to cooperation with government agents, no matter what. Also, other than the fact that they were a little over the top and someone else paid for their trip there were no clear signs that they were smugglers and those small "signs" aren't even good ones since they would describe a large number of travellers. It's cause once you've gone passed the border without declaring the material you've then broken the law, so they seize the lot, if they declare it first chances are they'll be allowed to take what the limit is.
Because if you are in excess of the legal limit, you lose the privilege to keep that allowed amount.
Reason being is because it means there’s no punishment or nothing to stop further importation . If there’s no punishment then people will try over and over and if they get caught it won’t be a big deal and will try again .
