Breath Controlled Buchla - Making a flute with a synthesizer

  • Here is the follow up video I promised, briefly explaining and demonstrating the "flute" patch I discovered recently. This simple patch involves an external input / preamp module with an envelope follower, an oscillator with timbre control / wave shaping and a vca. Adding a noise source as a secondary sound, opening it with a similar envelope, can really add to the illusion that its a flute. I am taking the envelope follower from the aux in, and patching that to amplitude and timbre of the complex oscillator. There is also a pulse generated every time I blow into the mic. The pulse tells a sequencer to advance, changing the note you hear every time you blow into the mic. Thank you for checking out my video! If you are interested, you can see me make improvised music live on twitch at / aarongoldberg .

Verry interesting! Man I wish I had time to build those things like that! I did experiment with Pure data.... But computer was too limited...!

Thank you so much! I have never tried Pure Data. Is it like Max? You could most likely easily recreate this using VCV rack. Would just need an audio interface to bring a mic into the computer environment. Have you played with VCV before? There is another program called Cardinal that is a virtual modular synth too. I have not tried that but heard good things.

@@AaronGoldbergMusic , Hey Aaron! Yeah, you did a nice job with recreating the flute! What I found most beautyfull, is how much expression you got out of the self-build breath controller!

@@AaronGoldbergMusic . Yes Pure Data is like Max XP, but than free? If I remeber correctly!
My problem is, I always run into limitations...!
With pure Data i've tried to create the basic controls and waves for a On NOISE based Synthezer, which then again. I wanted to combine them with some ideas I had created with creating sounds out of Math Only!
The Idea of the noise based sythesyzer was to be able to make really natural sounding sounds and less repetitive sounding samples and synths!

@@novardifunkegenaamdkaiser3491 Thanks a lot! I was so happy with the level of expression capable with this simple technique. In the main body of the video, I have the timbre cv amount very low, but if I raise it higher, there is even more variety available at higher amplitudes.

@@novardifunkegenaamdkaiser3491 This sounds like a really cool idea and I would definitely be interested to see it if you ever pull it off in the way you hope!

    That was fantastic!
Can you run the trigger for the sequence advance through a +/- attenuator to play with threshold?

To be honest I’m not 100% on sure how pulses behave so I really don’t know forsure but probably, that’s a good idea. Thank you for watching! I’m continuing to explore with this patch and I can try that out to see if I can dial in a threshold.
