- Place 61.8 g in a 500 ml round-bottomed flask, add 22 g of butyl alcohol. Equip the flask with a 50 or 60 ml Dean-Stark trap.
Heat the reaction mixture in an oil bath at 140*C while stirring until water stops separating.
The excess butyl alcohol is distilled off in a vacuum using a water pump, then tributyl borate is distilled off in a vacuum (temperatures differ).
Tributyl borate is "afraid" of moisture and hydrolyzes to boric acid and butyl alcohol. It is stable in air for 3-4 minutes.
Oooh i hate the smell of n butanol 🤢
A little spilled in my container of all of my alcohols and i havent been able to get all the smell out.
Very cool video! Any plans to use the tributyl borate produced for another synthesis?
Oh, yes, it smells terrible, if it spills you have to ventilate the room for a long time. Yes, it will be used in the synthesis of coumarins, in one of the possible future videos.
Thanks for watching and commenting
@bobh5004 Very cool. Well, I hope to see that in the future. A synthesis of a coumarin would be very interesting!
@@midwestchem368 Oops, I have curcumin (simple) on my channel, and a video of coumarin synthesis will be in the future. Tributyl borate is needed in the synthesis of curcumins. Please forgive me, I made a slight mistake
@bobh5004 oh that's quite ok no worries! Honestly curcumins would be even better since i don't believe there's any videos here yet.
@@midwestchem368 I have a video on my channel about curcumin synthesis.
