    Prohibition in the US not only wiped out most distilleries, it destroyed thousands of brandy distilleries. Brandy was the first uniquely American spirit, and peach brandy became the first drink made by the colonists they couldn’t get back in the old world. Fruit brandies are making a small comeback, but it’s disgusting how the self righteous puritans imposed prohibition. It’s still hard to find good peach brandy, but Catoctin creek makes an amazing one. It’s not complex, but it smells like a peach orchard in the morning, and tastes like peach cobbler.

    • @Kinshasa9200
      @Kinshasa9200 Рік тому

      With an unlimited budget, what peach brandy (from anywhere in the world) would you recommend?

    • @CharlesOffdensen
      @CharlesOffdensen Рік тому +2

      "Brandy was the first uniquely American spirit" - well, they have been making fruit brandy in the Balkans (Bulgaria more specifically) since the 13. century. That doesn't mean that US brandy isn't better though.

    • @richardbostan4286
      @richardbostan4286 Рік тому

      I am wondering if you know what the word "uniquely" means. To be "uniquely American" would mean that brandy, at the time, wasn't being made anywhere else in the world. It was certainly being made in France and Spain, at very least. Rye whisky may have been the first uniquely American spirit, preceding bourbon by about 150 years, but even that might be incorrect, since some historians contend German farmers were turning rye grain into distilled spirit before it happened in the English colonies in America. If rye whisky doesn't count, bourbon certainly does count as uniquely American, and the name "bourbon whisky" to this day is "geographically protected," meaning it can only be made in the US and labelled as "bourbon."

    • @CharlesOffdensen
      @CharlesOffdensen Рік тому

      @@richardbostan4286 Yes, I am indeed confused. What do you mean by "uniquely American"?
      "brandy, at the time, wasn't being made anywhere else in the world. It was certainly being made in France and Spain, at very least." - this is wrong. Fruit and wine brandy was made at that time and before in all Balkan countries. Brandy production started there in the Middle ages and never stopped. Brandy is made even in Turkey, and has been made for centuries.

    • @richardbostan4286

      @@CharlesOffdensen-- Why are you addressing me? I certainly didn't say anything "wrong."

    Hi Ralfy great to find your channel again, I have been a Rum drinker for most of my life, brought up in a public house in Comber Co Down. From the age of three I could only reach the Rum optic in the bar which was dark rum from Guyana, but, this taset has followed me all my life resulting in a good collection of Rums from around the world Totaling 60, my house tipple being Appleton 8 year old mixed with equal measures of Coke or coconut. Most of my collection are supplied by Master of Malt as there selection is fantastic .Continue with my education as I do with friends who can sample my taste and enjoyment.

    Rum was my initial tipple before getting into single malt scotch. I have to confess it was spiced rum and cola 😂however I began my “proper” rum journey a few years ago, I continue to enjoy bottlings from four square, the Doorlys range particularly the 12 and 14 year old, el dorado 12 YO. I love when you do a rum review. Your knowledge is second to none.
    On a side note , it was your passion for scotch whisky that got my journey with single malt started when I stumbled across your channel a few years ago. Thank you Ralphy 👍🏻

    Hello Ralfy, The rum of choice I've had a hard time beating is Pampero Aniversario. I've enjoyed Pusser's as well as Smith & Cross lastly Cruzan aged. All fine choices but Aniversario is my hands down favorite.

    Great video Ralfy (as usual). Now, I've started branching out from single malts to 'good quality rums'. Managed to get hold of an independently bottled 14yo worthy park (bottled by Thompson Bros.) and I cannot wait to try it. This will be my first 'proper' rum, and have big hopes!
    Anyway, cheers mate, take care.

    Hi Ralfy. I got lucky with Rum, I tried a few, not too keen on the over strength type Navy or the lighter Mount Gay type rums. I do really like the OVD (Old Vatted Demerara) and the Trawler and Demerara Rums from Taylor's. These 3 rums are some of the cheapest out there which suits me. Thanks for your videos mate.

    America has the advantage in rum varieties and prices at the moment. Anyone in the US should be taking advantage, this era will not last more than another 10-15 years before it’s ruined like the whisky scene has been (by high prices).

    The Brits expanded taxation to all exports to the colonies, they were nickel and diming the colonist. When they hit the ships in the harbor they ended up tossing bales of tea leaves into the harbor. Hence the name.

    Ralfy, love the glyphosate rant! After these 3 years and counting, the terms "science" and "scientists" just no longer command the authority they used to have. Well earned, too. Scientists are easily bribed, their careers depend on it. It takes real courage to go against the big science establishment.
