Introducing the NEW 2017 Audi RS3 Quattro! When I was growing up hot hatches had 118hp 4 cylinder engines and cost £10,000...things have changed! The all new Audi RS3 Quattro has just under 400hp, 7 speed dual clutch S-line gear box and of course the incredible Quattro all wheel drive system developed for maximum traction...

A bone stock RS3 has done the 1/4 mile in 11.8. Very impressive. Tuning will put it easily in the 10's.
Having a 10 second car that drives in all weather types is very impressive.
The funny fact is that the inline 5 engine in the RS3 sounds way better than the stupid V6 in the RS5. I just wonder what were the engineers thinking?
Fortune Cookies The problem is mainly the exhaust system on the RS5. The same engine sounds great in the Panamera. That said a 5 cylinder always beats a 6 cylinder in sound.
Exaclty, agree with kraenk12 as well, reminds me of my 80 B4 2,3E 5cyl. N/A, amazing sound.

The V6 in the RS5, first of all, is not stupid. It is an extremely potent engine with great behavioural characteristics. The exhaust/engine sound in that V6 lacks the character of this inline 5, but unless you are wealthy enough to buy a brand-new V10 in a car, anything will be lacking, since the I-5 just sounds so good. And every reviewer that compared the Panamera 2.9 set-up to the RS5 2.9 set-up put the RS5 in front. It is still a rapid sportscar, only not so frentic and without a V8.

I Need That Car I've got the S3 306bhp in saloon form and love it. Had it since May. Kind of wish I'd waited a little longer though and gone for the RS.
1980arw the S3 Saloon is still a brilliant car especially in the conditions that Mr JWW had in his vid. I love the way that car looks especially in Sepang Blue (I had one before I got my Cayman so slightly biased). The price point of the RS3 with options is a lot though. To put it in to perspective you could buy an RS4 for £60k just a couple of years ago.
I Need That Car I the mk2 TTRS with 340 hp with the awesome 5cyl engine. It is a blast. The sound is incredible. You will have a lot of fun!

At this pace 10 years from now, we'll have 600bhp hot hatches that do sub 7 Nürburgring lap times.
Probably sooner actuallly, now that I think about it.

Well it's essentially half a V10 R8/Huracan engine, hence the similarities.

SilverS I didn't even know what he was trying to say...Audi A3/RS3 has always had transversely mounted engines. The only 5 cal ever longitudinally mounted was in the older Quattro coupes.
Never been a fan of the alcantara so I wish they done a comfort interior in it because of the amazing exterior looks. Great car though

"The weather is terrible..." Huh!? Ever been to Ontario, Canada in January? Yeah, we don't get the RS3 in Canada (don't know why), but my A3 e-tron is brilliant, even in the snow! Love the virtual cockpit!
It's an exceptionally beautiful piece of kit and performance. Fast practical daily car which goes head to head against its rivals like the Golf R and Focus RS. I had a chance to test drive the S3 in Misano Red back in Boston and boy it responds to roads well and the turning radius is very sharp and spot on even when I darted in and out of traffic at break neck speeds. Certainly gave the salesman the scare of his life. Nonetheless, would settle for this but definitely wait for the price to come down a bit with some deals and rebates in place. Awesome video James keep it coming.

Yes I own one of those original S3's, well a 99T, ironically the same colour as the RS3 your testing here, its only done 40k, its like new and has been sheeted up in my garage for the last 10 years, Love it. That New Rs3 looks awesome! and sound's like and Group B S1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!.. Nice work bro..

Transversal layout comes from the MQB platform which is more efficient and compact. Sadly this means only Haldex quattro, which can only split 50/50 max, rather being FWD.
Still the car is just perfect. Theres nothing better than that 5cyl and the RS3 Interior... one day I hope I'll own one

I drove the 360 BHP 2015 RS3 a couple of years back and that thing was a beast! 0-60 was definitely quicker than Audis quoted 4.3 seconds

450BHP in the W12 i used to own was awesome for such a big car, so 400BHP in an a3, must be mind blowing!, have to say though, i'm preffering the RS3 SEDAN look :)
All the recent small Audis have had their engines mounted and it is done for packaging reasons (platform shared with VW Golf). This is not new for this A3/S3/RS3. The transverse mounting also implies a less sporty Haldex centre differential as opposed to the traditional Torsen used with longitudinally mounted engines.
I think this video again shows how much better james does his videos compared to the other british car yt. Just much more exciting.

Hi, James,good review of this astonishing RS3 !!! I've been thinking at your description below the video. Nothing most true of what you said! When I was a child I was looking to the hottest hatches and they have that average amount of that kind of power. But now An RS3 that has a bit less power of a BMW M4 is just unbelievable!! I don't dare to imagine in the near future what ABT or MTM will be making at this model and the performance that will be achieving!!
The saloon doesn't look right but the sportback with Daytona Grey is the way to go

Well I wouldn't say that Abt or mtm is right decision for a ecu upgrade, proper ecu remap only is a thing that does car drive smooth, because mtm and Abt only offer piggyback systems
for the road all year round... it has to be the RS3... if only they could put the best chassis under that power train it would be a legend.

There a is alot to be said for 4-wheel drive in any car especially in high performance cars put the hp to the ground in dry or wet conditions

I heard it was the crank shaft that was hollowed out, most prop shafts are hollow have been for years

Hey James. Great video but..What was that mumbling about the transversely mounted engine?! Every A3/RS3 ever had a transversely mounted engine. The new one is built on the MQB platform. Q meaning quer which means transverse in German. The last 5 cylinder Audi mounted longitudinally was used in the Audi 80 and Audi 80 coupe.
Below the A4 Audis share the platform with VW which had always had transversely mounted engines. From the A4 up they use the MLB platform, L standing for L like...yeah...longitudinal. Cheers

Hello James :) so the RS3 is a better driver proposition as a hatchback or the L version? i'm talking as weight distribution ( does the L versione understeer like the hatchback? do have they impreved the hatchback from the last gen?
It's amazing to think that hot hatches are now getting close to 400bhp. I mean they're practically encroaching on their bigger brothers toes now. The AMG A45 is close in power to the C63, the M2 is close in power to the M3 and the RS3 is close in power to the RS5. Makes you wonder why even bother spending the extra on the premium class models if performance is what you're after.
James, what did you think about general road noise? I test drove an S3 a couple of weeks and found it so noisy (road noise, I didn't mind the engine noise). Totally unacceptable so now looking elsewhere.
