Looking back, how did I not LOVE this song upon first listen, or acknowledge how good it really was? Possibly the best song they've written, and certainly one of the best I've heard. Just, everything about it is amazing. When taken into context of the story of Epica/The Black Halo, it only becomes better.
I accidently discovered this band just 3 weeks ago. Reading the last chapter of one romantic story, I saw a short comment: "Kamelot - Love you to death". There were also comments of people thanking for sharing that awesome song which fitted the mood perfectly (the story is really tragic). In order to distract myself from the tense and thoughts of obvious and unavoidable ending I tried and listened to the song... Only to start shedding tears and get a lump in my throat. What a great voice, what a text - AND THAT GUITAR SOLO, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL, IT'S DIVINE! The ultimate expression of the feeling of loss. I ended up crying a lot that night. Then I found "Elizabeth I, II, III" (Live) and couldn't stop listening to that powerfull and emotional song for several days. Roy is awesome, the band is great. I listened to other songs, too. But only after I had listened to the albums "Epica" and "The Black Halo" with commentaries (here, on UA-cam, user SlackProduction kindly uploaded them) I understood - and completely felt - the deepness, emotionality and meaning of the songs. What makes them so great is (partly, but importantly) their interrelation. I was left speachless by the middle of "The Black Halo" album and got constant goose bumps. And the last three songs... PURE EPICNESS. "Memento Mori" is truly the perfect ending song. When you know the story, you understand the meaning of the lyrics, the scale of Ariel's thoughts and feelings. It didn't sound great to me before that. And that "Ariel..." (x3) at the end. OH THE TEARS AND THE CHILLS!! I hope it was really the voice of Helena in heaven, not just Ariel's imagination. SO, since I discovered Kamelot thanks to some user, I feel that I should follow suit and recommend a group. And I know the perfect one - and the perfect album which really resembles the Ariel saga (mostly because of the main antagonist). And the group is also legendary. Trans-Siberian Orchestra - "Beethoven's Last Night" (2000). ENJOY!!! P.S. Roy Khan looks really similar to my professor of philosophy who also loves metal music.

My favourite band made a conceptual masterpiece inspired in my favourite book!!!! Epica and The Black Halo are timeless albums to me!!!! I can´t help but to be all happy whenever I listen to this great songs!!! An awsome job for an almost 9 minute song that u just want to replay!!! Thnx 4 the lyrics
Wrong! Faust is the main protagonist of Goethe's myth. Ariel is a secondary character in the book. But here, This is the story of Ariel If he had been the main character in Kamelot adaptation of the book.
You are partly incorrect. The Ariel in the concept album is based on Faust, though none of the details are matched. The whole concept is very loosely based on Faust with the names and circumstances all changed.

The outro is one of the most soothing pieces of music I've ever heard. The whole keyboard sequence at the end reminds me of Nightwish's "Moondance."
