this happens a decent amount of the time with instrumentals. i think its because drums also are mic'ed as well as the singer, so even when they cut out the vocal track theres still faint singing from the drum mics.
Yes it's usually hard to remove 100% of the vocals with the vocals being so closely tied in with the instruments. Especially when bands or singers use a bunch of harmonies, and overlays, and shit like that.
