"that's just right, you narcissist" haha!
😂
Guess you're in big trouble now... you've stolen your presidents daily mantra
I'm totally going to try this. Setting my vocals into the mix is the hardest part for me. Drives me nuts that I can make the band sound amazing but I feel like my voice stands out like a pop-out in a childrens book.. gahh..
Same.
Your voice will always sound weird to you if you know you can do better, keep ya head up king🤙🏼
To be honest. This is one of the best mixing tipps i've ever gotten. Thanks, Joe.
This was a torture to my mind. Thanks God you are alive.
You have no idea how much this is going to help me. Thanks for the tip
I have been doing this exact thing and it really does work. What also helps is doing this in mono and turning off one speaker.
Great tip! Im always go back and forth from thinking the voice is too loud to thinking its too quiet in a second, so this is really helpful!
Great advice. Andrew Scheps just did a streaming thing for Waves and he was talking about how he approaches mixing, which he said he often does through headphones, at low volumes, then checks his work on his monitors. It makes a lot of sense.
That dude's a beast.
Definitely going to try this out, just finished a mix earlier today, and vocals sound right in my headphones, but sound louder than I’d like when playing car or anywhere else
I have watched other self help videos and all would say, "the vocal needs to sit right above the music", but never said how to achieve that level. I have been recording at home as a hobby since 2010 and this is the first time anyone has demonstrated how to make the vocal sit just right. This one video has made my day. Thanks so much!
The first time I saw this technique was about 15 years ago when I was cutting some songs in The Tracking Room Nashville. I still use it every now and then.
Thanks for this. I constantly forget to turn the mix down and just listen.
Simple. Not stupid. Works. Great tip Joe. Really handy!
Wow! I passed on this tip to a colleague last week...I still use this technique from time to time. Simple and effective. Excellently explained..Cheers Joe from a fellow Narcissist : )
00:00-1:00 OH MY FUCKING GOD NEVER HAS SOMEONE UNDERSTOOD ME SO FUCKING WELL I LOVE YOU
Very cool! Just finished a mix and this was exactly what happened to me, and like you, I loved the vocal sound, but was a bit to loud. Thanks for the video!
ahh joe you've done it again! Problem identified problem addressed. I have this issue all the time and it often doesn't become apparent til I listen to the song several months after the final recording.
thx for the schoolin'.
Yes!! Coming through in the clutch Joe.
Yes! I always bring the mix down to check vocal level. Sometimes I will switch to smaller speakers too ☺
Thank you so much for this!! It helps me sooo much when I’m listening to my mixes on different speakers and headphones!!
It actually worked I’m actually surprised, most tutorials don’t really help like that
That's a game changer! Thank you so much for that tip Joe. So useful.
Joe. I needed this tip. As a singer who records in isolation, I tend to overblow the vocals all the time. Ooooo the vanity!!!!
That "stupid" Tipp is just the smartest Tipp ive got so far on UA-cam, im an artist and im not really into Mix and Master but im Playing around with fruity loops for some years now and started mixing and mastering myself, its hard enough to get confident on mixing the own voice and finding the sweet Spot in loudness is even harder. So thanks for the Video and Keep up the great work!👍 #AboBellLike 😊
Hey Joe, just what I needed to hear yet again. Thanks mate😁👍
Every time I start to battle with that one dB up, one dB down cycle I do this. It really does work. My problem is to convince the client that is where the vocal should be, since they are used to a louder vocal in cans...!
Great tip!! I sometimes get lost with the levels when I'm listening to the track at a high volume for long. I always only realise the vocals are way too loud compared to the beat when I'm listening to my stuff on spotify 😅
I actually discovered this technique myself haha, awesome to see other people do it
I would say that this trick is useful for every lead track you want to balance. I use it for vocals, but also for guitars, for synths... It works pretty well. And it can sometimes help for just managing the volumes, not only for lead elements.
When it sounds right to you it's perfect
WOrks like a champ! Thanks Joe
This guy is a genius!
great tip almost passed this video by as I tend to like the vocals much louder but this is brilliant thank you Joe
Mann!!!. This CHANGED everything. Haha. Thank You 🖖🏼
Thanks! I try it tomorrow.👍
Nailed it! Thanks!
Spot on.
Thanks for sharing Joe; what a difference this makes to the overall balance of the mix; something so simple but extremely effective; great tip!! Keep up the good work.
Thanks I always have struggled with that
Great video! Trying to properly mix a podcast intro. Thank you!
what an excellent technique. I love this video!
Thanks Joe! I'm just learning to mix and I've really been struggling with this.
WOW! You really put me on with this simple and effective video much appreciation from a hiphop artist that grew up on all genres of music.
Perfect timing! I am mixing a new song and trying to get the vocal volume just right. (And the in-and-out backing vocal just make it harder.) Thanks for the tips!
This nailed it just perfectly! I always wondered why some of my friends told me that my voice sounds too loud on my mixes. Now I know why. And I also learned how to fix it. Thank you so much!
I love you Joe. Your jokes, sense of humor and style of teaching. You have helped me a lot on mixing and especially on Studio one. #family
Thank you 💞 am having some issues of a very long time
I love you
Spot On!!
Super helpful!
Wow!!! That actually worked. Thanks for the tip.....now I have to go back and check my other mixes. LOL!!!
back at it again coming through with the life saving mix tip
Thanks for this tip Joe! I’ve been struggling with this with vocals and guitars squashing the bass and drums. Never thought to bring volume down. I recently installed Arc 3 room correction. It brings the volume down and corrects my room. I haven’t been using it in this context. I’m going to start using it for this purpose.
Thank you. This saved me alot!
Thanks mixing the vocal with the snare help my mix time 100 I was wondering my vocals too loud to mid range in the car and couldn’t here the snare or kick just vocal and basss
I remember one of the guys that taught audio at my college said something similar. Said that a good starting point is to turn everything down, and the vocal should be one of the last things that fades out when you get closer to 0 (like on a radio volume control).
I'm also a vocalist so I know the feels of making things too loud XD I also have issues compensating the other way around and the vocals end up too quiet.
Awesome thank you so much 👍🏽
i mean, i use this technique forever, and used to think this is stupid, but we are not alone, it works hehe.
Amazing 😻
Great tip.
Really good tip - as usual! Thanks Joe! Have a wonderful day!
THANK YOU! You just got a new subscriber
Beautiful voice Joe
Yep - I struggle with this. Thanks Joe!!
OMG this channel is like a mind-reader on all the topic I wanna learn XD!!!
Fletcher & Munson gave a shout out.
Cool trick btw
5:05 Sometimes its nice to be "stupid". Lol Thanks Joe!
THANKS
super super helpful. really love your presentation Joe. Keep it up!
Also, If you're using headphones one thing you can try is taking them off and bending them a little so each speaker is facing away but not interfering with each other. Then set it down and listening to the vocal.
Thank you
Joe honestly i think you tend to mix vocals on a quiet side. In the past, at least. Now i see you have changed your vocal preferences? :)
Btw i like your new mixes more than those you had in past. You did a great job honing your skill!
That’s the game!
This is worth being reminded of, thanks!
In Logic there is a 'D' button on the Master bus, which act like a dimmer - brings the volume down in 1 click. Very useful, IMO, for 'quiet mixing'. Is there something like that in Studio One? a macro, maybe?
(Gregor, if you're reading this..)
You could easily use the “mix tool” insert on your master bus and set the gain down to the desired level. Then you can just toggle on/off.
Great Tip, gonna try this on a mix I am working on right now. Thx!
Awesome tip… that “you narcissist” comment felt personal lmao😂 I do that too often. Will definitely try this as soon as I get home.
I literally was just looking for a video on this and you posted!
Thank you Joe! This is very helpful👍👌
Really good 🤙🏻
Hey @Joe Gilder, can you make an in-depth tutorial or guide about the proper way of gain staging?
Thanks, and I love your videos!
Answered on the podcast! www.homestudiocorner.com/episode-254/
Good technique for guitar solos especially.
Another thing that works similarly is flip your master bus to mono (or use a plug-in to to it).
Yes!! I've been doing this a lot recently...really helps
yoooooooo another video 😍❤️
Every week, yo.
@@HomeStudioCorner keep going, i watch em! ❤️
Great tip!! Gonna try it out!!
Brilliant tip. Thank you.
A possible solution to a long, LONG time prob. 😎
very helpful to me Joe. Thanks!
Great advice that I've not thought about!! Enjoy your tutorials!! They are always interesting and very useful! Thanks!
Nice song
I love doing it that way also.
This is a really good one ... this is something I struggle with
Here's a question for everyone: why do so many people crank themselves in their live monitors? How can you hear what the other musicians are doing? Are you (especially church musicians) just following the track, or are you actually paying attention? I have always preferred a mix in my in ears where I'm at actual live volume, and it has always made me extremely angry to hear that others crank themselves, but I want to learn. What is the deal?
Great tip, thanks!
Why do I love the low end in your voice, is this the earthworks or the mini k47?
The thing is wrapping all instruments around the vocal is key.
Thats an awesome trick! Lol I guess I like to listen to myself too loud too. But what if you arent using drums in the mix- I do a lot of piano ballads that dont have drums?
Thank you, tried this and it's an awesome tip. But now what if you're working on a song that is a ballad with no drums?
Thank you so freaking much!!!!!
I love how you just went into right away instead of doing a stupid super long introduction
you're a life saver haha
