Green Lane Park - A Contaminated Spot?

  • Green Lane Park appears to be a nice, normal park for families to visit and enjoy. Originally is offered swimming and other activities, but at some point, the water somehow became contaminated. The sandy beaches were covered up and people told to stay out of the water. With that said, the park, trails and surroundings are still beautiful and worthy of a visit. So come along with me as we take a walk around to show what Green Lane Park offers. Enjoy

I used to live 5min if that from the park n the spillway that is caged is actually a soil retention as well as for overflow in case of flooding n the majority reason it's alleged to be contaminated is because they had painted the iron bridge you walked on n it killed a multitude of fish from paint dropping down in water n another reason it's contaminated above the spillway is because of constant sewage leaks from nearby residents in cottages n it runs down into the tiny streams right into the park water n finally you have the wild life water fowl that's a contributing factor n that's why ur not supposed to be feeding them but however people do lol but that's actually why but the officials there or of the County of Montgomery are not at liberty to admit that or they just won't due to the negative impact of general public n it's sad because i remember years ago swimming in it fishing n further down the rapids tubing in it swinging off a rope swing into the water further down route 29 near the old mill the had caught fire years ago, which by the way i grew up with Edward swade jr who is the son of the original owner. That place is awsome n huge inside it's got like 5 floors to it it's completely awsome. Anyways like i said i grew up in upper perkiomen school district so i know every square inch of that park n the sister surrounding parks of it in the neighboring town. Oh and for those who didn't know there is a campground uphill from the gazebo u were in across the roadway up above the parking lot also. I've been in that park countless times since I've been a young tot to adult but now live 3hrs away n not far from Centralia lol 😆 go figure one of ur shows of travel bout graffiti highway so sad it's been covered up with soil or whatever it is.

Thank you for all that info. Definitely answered a lot of questions. I have grown up around this park and used to swim here as well. Ironic that you ended up near centralia since we always seem to end up going up there. Thanks again for filling in the blanks.

Back in like 92 there was a platform on that tree that was literally parallel to the water. It was the best. You could swing out, back, kick the tree, once again and finally jump. Saw some nasty rope burn on a guy that year, but that tree fell in. Also I once bought a new 1" yellow water rope, tied a monkeys fist to the end, climbed up to replace a clothesline, came back and some jackass removed it, unknotted it and it was hanging as a rope ladder to climb out of the swirling pool. I wonder if they built a bridge to get over that cement hole to get over there, my g/f was afraid to cross it 5 years ago.

Water is infected by Cadmium, Lead and Nitrogen from main sewer leaks that still leak. Fish are contaminated and one of the reasons why you can't swim there. Imagine if you drank some water.

You were in my neck of the woods, about 15 mins away. There is also a camping area there. When I was an assistant Cubmaster we took the cub scouts there for an overnight camping trip. I have fished that lake and ate the fish with no problems. The main reservoir where they take the water for drinking is further up and has a huge waterfall.

10:45 That's the emergency flood spillway, in case the primary spillway can't handle the water in the event of a sever flood event. The dip in the damn, which you can see as you walk across it, channels additional water that the main spillway can't over that point, and the bails of stones prevent it from eroding the downward face of the damn in such an emergency. The upper part of Knight Lake is actually part of Deep Creek, while the lower larger part is the Perkiomen. I don't think the waters from Knight Lake are used for any potable water uses. Knight Lake is a small flood control reservoir. The smaller upper part of Knight Lake is definitely the most abused water body in the park because of it's ease of public access and amenities, while most of the large Green Lane reservoir is surrounded by dense forests and / or steep banks and cliffs in the deeper areas and private property in the shallow end. The Green Lane Reservoir, which is part of the Perkiomen Creek proper, retained by the larger spillway damn farther up the Perkiomen Creek, is used as a water source for the area and as far away as Philadelphia.

BRIEF HISTORY OF GREEN LANE PARK
Green Lane Park is Montgomery County’s largest County Park, at approximately 3,400 acres. The variety of landscape includes rolling hills, forested uplands, open meadows, wetlands and three bodies of water - Green Lane Reservoir (814 acres), Deep Creek Lake (38 acres) and Knight Lake (26 acres). Today’s Green Lane Park is the result of the collaborative efforts of Montgomery County and the Philadelphia Suburban Water Company over 40 years ago. Its earliest roots however, began in 1939 when the Montgomery County Commissioners dedicated 425 acres as Upper Perkiomen Valley Park.
Philadelphia Suburban Water Company began planning Green Lane Reservoir in 1929 with the goal of providing a reliable water supply for the region. The actual construction of the dam across the Perkiomen Creek began in 1954 and was completed in 1957. In 1959 Philadelphia Suburban Water Company opened Green Lane Reservoir for public use for recreation activities with limited shoreline fishing and boating in the 1960s. In 1983 Green Lane Reservoir Park was established when Montgomery County took control through an agreement that turned over recreational easement rights from Philadelphia Suburban Water Company. From 1983 to 1998 Green Lane Park was operated as two different parks - Green Lane Reservoir Park and Upper Perkiomen Valley Park. In 1998 Montgomery County merged the two parks into one, now called Green Lane Park.
    EARLY HISTORY OF THE AREA
As with most areas of southeastern Pennsylvania, the area within the park was originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Indians (Delaware Indians), or “true people.” The Lenni-Lenape were among the first Indians to come in contact with the European settlers (Dutch, English, & Swedish) in the early 1600s.
The name Green Lane is believed to have been given to the early iron works located in the borough of Green Lane, because of the abundance of evergreens covering the rocky hills surrounding the valley and the narrow road or lane that led from the “highway” to the furnace. The name of the borough is derived from the furnace name.
The Perkiomen Railroad was extended through Green Lane and Perkiomenville in 1872. A train station in Green Lane made the community more accessible to the outside world. This encouraged the growth of the borough, increasing the population and the expanding industry. By the turn of the 20th century, Green Lane was home to many businesses, including banking, carriage works, mercantile, cigar factories, ice manufacturing and clothing mills.

I remember picnicking and swimming there with my extended family back in the mid-late 80s until they closed the park. The beach wasn’t finely ground sand either, almost like gravel, 1/8” to 1/4” in size. And the stone walkway you show, I remember walking on that to the pavilion areas and concession stand. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. Quick side note, the Perkiomen Trail is the old right-of-way for the Perkiomen Railroad, which was leased to the Reading Railroad, and ran from Perkiomen junction just outside of Oaks PA, up to, if I recall, Emmaus PA.

It’s been a looooooong time, lol. So it’s hard to recall entirely, but yeah, I think it did. It may not be all there anymore. I believe they dumped it every season onto the beach area and then it would wash into the reservoir as the months went by. I’d imagine the currents probably carried some of it downstream or pushed it up against the dam areas. It’s a shame there is no way to remediate the area and reopen it to swimming.

Let's be real. That 'concession stand' was once a giant outhouse and 30 foot deep hole that had about 28 holes in the floor as toilets and the smell of like you've never smelled before. There was a drain pipe at the beach where kids played in thick mud coming down from that hill. They blamed the ducks, they blamed the paint... it was human feces runoff.

You answered my question about vehicle access. I would definitely walk on the immediate left or immediate right because those sides were less used by vehicles of course because where it’s rotting the most is the middle. Wonder how often the county comes and checks out the bridge to make sure it’s still okay to walk on? It seems so soothing out there. A nice walk especially when the weather gets cooler and before the snow comes. Oh look at that runoff!!! Gorgeous! Oh my goodness, Alan!! When you said that about his finger JP, I pictured Alan ending up looking like Swamp Thing or like Stephen King in Creepshow. 🤣 That Dam Breast sign. JP, you are too funny! 😂😂😂 I was gonna tell u I’m sure he’s gonna have more chances to fall. 🤣 Thanks for sharing!!

Doesn't look at all contaminated to me...I think it's beautiful there. But I know things can be deceiving. There was a long bridge just like that near where I lived in N.C. but it was also closed and traffic re-routed. So, we, as teenagers, used to party on it! Shot fireworks from it too. They eventually dismantled it and I hate that I NEVER took any photos before that happened. These videos keep my week from being so boring so thanks, as always, for the outing!

The video of the larger spillway looked like an infinity pool edge. Very pretty! Too bad the water is contaminated. Kind of takes away from the appeal of a park.
