@SwegleStudios fyi Hurricane Ian has been upgraded to a Category 5 by the NHC.
I can’t go one day without watch your vids
Congrats on the sponsorship
Thanks!
Reminds me of Better call Saul😂
@@soj3091god it really does🤣🤣
I love the canned laughter so popular in advertising haha
Just a week ago, Hurricane Ian was upgraded to a category 5 by post analysis. The NHC officially updated it to 160 MPH sustained winds.
Live here in PG our airport recorded up to 190/200 mph on some of the gusts!!
The Storm Surge I think is way more horrific than just the wind.
@@boogitybear2283yeah, and the flooding..
…
@@TheGreenViewer456 something wrong buddy
Having lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming at an altitude of 6,000 feet, winds gusting to +60mph are rather common. However, air density being 20% lower than at sea-level makes these higher winds significantly less damaging. Something to keep in mind when trying to estimate wind-damage in parts of the Western US.
Also I can imagine how a hurricane from sea level with all the rain that the water laden air is going to pack more of a wallop at a given speed than dry air.
I'm here in Cheyenne, thank you for explaining why we don't get such extreme damage! I always wondered how we can get 80+ mph winds fairly regularly especially in the fall and winter and not too much actually ends up happening
When I first watched an episode of "American Justice" which profiled the murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming in October of 1998; the narrator Bill Kurtis said that the high plains which surround Laramie are well-known for their incessant and punishing winds.
I believe the annual average wind speed in Cheyenne is close to 20 mph.
Cheyenne Colorado. Wyoming does not exist
Always love to see a new Swegle video in the sub box!
A point about hurricanes vs tornadoes that is often overlooked when comparing damage in relation to raw windspeed numbers - A tornado will typically apply its wind field to a given area for at most a minute or two whereas a typical hurricane will apply its winds for at least a couple of hours. This can make the damage from an "equivalent" tornado look much tamer in comparison to a hurricane when you consider, as an example, that a typical category 3 hurricane is like having a strong EF2 to weak EF3 tornado on top of your house for several hours.
The Jarrell tornado is a good example. It's entirely possible the wind speeds by themselves were lower than the F5 criteria, but because it didn't move it caused more damage. It quite literally blended Double Creek Estates.
Not only the wind speed, but also the negative pressure that just pulls buildings apart as well and then the wing shreds them like a blender
I would say the difference is a matter of concentration. The damage from the tornado is concentrated at the base of its funnel, that is where the wind speed is potentially 200+mph, but it can be so concentrated that you can be in your house watching your neighbors' houses across the street get demolished while your house has almost no damage at all. That's what happened in the Andover KS tornado last year that was filmed with drones.
Also, hurricane feeder bands before the hurricane actually hits you can cause in-land tornadoes. Where I live, this is very common that we have our weather radio handy. It was hard to see, but our local meteorologists estimated there were about 10 EF0-EF2 tornadoes that spawned during Zeta in 2020.
@@Iceechibi That's another aspect most people don't know about! They're usually not very strong but there are often a LOT of them in a concentrated area. I lived in Bay county during the outbreak from Ivan and I think we saw 100 or so over two days.
Swegle in the sirens video: I'm not a nuclear bomb channel.
This video: hey
Thanks so much for putting the kilometers per hour in too! It makes the speed way easier to grasp for viewers outside of the states.
No problem!
Yes, a massive thank you, it's greatly appreciated!
Yup, always a pain in the bum, when you see an intersting video, but the creator didn't use real measurements.
I grew up in Florida. We have the wind scale of "Humidity at 320%," to "Tampa Thunderstorm! Hunker down in the bathtub!" to "I ain't gonna evacuate!" and, finally, "Homestead".
I live right by the area that had the fastest winds in the Iowa Derecho. I was one of the first residents to bolt out of their homes to help clean up, the damage was devastating. I have photos of buildings having their entire BRICK awnings ripped off, we lost so many trees.
Oh wow! We lost a few trees at my place as well.
I live in Cedar Rapids and there are still dozens of trees down in specific areas shit was crazy
My favorite tornado channel. Congrats on the sponsorship. Have you done a historical tornado tier-list?. 🎉
Yes! i'd love to see that
Thanks! Not yet but I'll add it to the video list!
I live in Texas and deal with pretty intense storms regularly. Unlike other Texans, I HATE storms. I have a phobia of tornadoes. I know that fear is a perfectly reasonable reaction when faced with a spiralling wind tube of death, but even thinking about them can make me panic. Your channel is proving to be transformative in how I understand storms. I love how informative you are, and how much admiration you have for the topic. It's compelling, and it convinced me that tornadoes might actually be kind of cool. I don't think I'd ever want to meet one in person, but yeah, they're kinda cool. Considering education is the best way to combat fear, I just wanted to say thank you and that I think your videos are pretty dope.
Interesting thing with Ted Fujita, he was actually in the original target for one of the bombs when they were dropped, but cloudy weather meant that they went with a backup target.
Thanks! How long ago did you start watching?
@@SwegleStudios today
@@SwegleStudios around a couple months ago! keep the content coming, i absolutely love it!!
@@SwegleStudios sorry for the late reply, I started watching around the Warner Robins and Tornado Hotspot Cities videos
From what I understand; Nagasaki wasn't the original target for the second bombing. The five targets in question were Hiroshima, Yokohama, Kokura, Kyoto and Niigata. Yokohama is rather close to Tokyo and had been largely destroyed by traditional air raid and firebombing campaigns; so it was eliminated. Kokura and Niigata were spared due to the weather conditions making it impossible to locate the target. Though the reason why Kyoto was spared is rather surprising: Henry Stimson (the Secretary of War) had spent his honeymoon in Kyoto and became so fond of the city that he was adamant about Kyoto being spared.
I love your content, dude! It's the best thing to watch while you're bored at 3AM.
Glad you enjoy it! I catch myself watching a lot of UA-cam at 3 in the morning as well
My favourite weather channel 👍🏻 much love homie
Also thank you for translating to Km/hour for us Canadians
I thought y'all measured everything in moose, snowfalls, and poutine.
@@cavalierliberty6838 which Canadian leaked this information to you?? We have to find them and lock them up for leaking national secrets.
@@cavalierliberty6838 The Canadian / US border is now known as the Poutine Curtain.
Something to note about nuclear blast winds is that testing has shown that lower-yield weapons can create what's known as a precursor wave where instead of a static burst of overpressure that would lightly damage a jeep and other vehicles, precursors are dynamic winds that heavily affect drag sensitive targets so the jeep that was barely rocked from the high-yield weapon will be sent end-over-end many yards away by the precursor wave.
It seems to happen on surfaces like the desert sands of the NTS, where the heat flash causes a popcorning effect with the sand vaporizing and causing a layer of hot air near the ground.
I laughed way hardeer at that guy losing his tent more than i should have lol😅
SWEGLE!!!!!
It’s always a good day when you upload a new video. I love your content so much. It’s very unique and I enjoy that it delves into areas of tornado history that most other tornado UA-camrs don’t care about.
So glad to see your channel gaining so much popularity!
Thanks so much!
Just wanted to say congrats on the sponsorship, this was a fun video to watch.
I was thinking a fun idea (which has a mini series potential) would be doing videos on notable (or obscure non notable) tornadoes which strike outside of North America, such as Europe, Japan, south America, Africa, etc...
I think it would be fun to learn about unusual tornadic events in other countries.
I agree.. Its on my current video list, but its a long list haha
@@SwegleStudios ohh ok, awesome! Yeah no worries. I'm glad you have a long video list, can't wait to watch more of your content, been really enjoying it! Thanks again!

"What was the windiest wind ever winded" Beautiful words Swegle

This channel and Pecos Hank are my two favorite weather topic videos I enjoy
The 2020 Derecho knocked out my power in the quad cities for like 2 days. It was crazy.
You are EXTREMELY underrated, keep doing what you’re doing this is great content
I love a nice breeze during a pour, it’s nice when you walk in the rain
FYI, owen wilson has a line he repeats in a lot of his movies, "The wind's blowin' up a gale!" Prime material to edit in for future videos on wind!

When you are describing how the EF scale works, putting in *”aka El Reno”* really made me laugh.
I love that you added both MPH and KM/H! I love watching the channel grow, your videos are so bingeable keep it up!
another note on mount washington: when the northeast got hit with that massive arctic blast back at the beginning of february, a new US record wind chill was set there at -108 degrees fahrenheit! early that next morning i had to walk to work in boston through -30 wind chills. it sucked lmao
I absolutely love learning about this! I was in the 2020 midwest derecho and it was absolutely insane!
Im a train guy like seriously but this guy is making me a tornado guy
Thanks! My best friend is a big train guy too haha
@@SwegleStudios hehe
i remember the iowa derecho very clearly. I was on the edge of the Mississippi river in a town called Oquawka IL and was watching the storm roll in. i've never seen such a dramatic change in temperature, color and sky. My first sign that it's time to leave was when downward vorticies slammed into the ground and threw up dust and debris. i got my in truck and booked it east to peoria and was racing the storm at 80 mph and it was keeping up and nearly beating me! I remember going through construction area and watching cones and pylons getting flung into the air, some going 20' into the air! i finally got home as the edge of the storm came down and there was a slight reversal of the wind before every tree in the area bent over, knocking out power and throwing debris through cars and windows. I have a picture of the edge of the storm rolling over the Mississippi river if you ever want to see it.
Your creepy wind sound was definitely on par 😂 congrats on your success! ❤
😁
I see power rankings and my brain activates 👀
Ian was reclassified as a Cat5 recently
I remember hearing about the sanibel island lighthouse
This channel has quickly become one of my absolute favs. You have the same obsessive weather thoughts I do!
I was at work during the Derecho in Iowa. Whole time I was stressing about the condition of the home I was in at the time. It was difficult to get home due to trees and power lines in the roads. I finally got to the block I was living on and there was pretty good amount of damage. Hardly a stick in my yard and had power within 2 and a half hours, some went without power for 4 days. Had some of my employees at the time sleep over because I had ac and it was pretty hot at the time. No one in Iowa will likely forget the event.
I survived May 3rd 1999 in Moore Oklahoma. I was parked in my truck right next to the water tower at 9:20. I left my homestate of Oklahoma of 39 years shortly afterwards. Me great grandparents lived on tenth street in Woodward Oklahoma in 1947.
Was leaving influenced by the tornado or was it other factors?
@@GetOffMyLog Yes. Their were a few other factors but this was the final straw. Do you really want to know? bro that sponsor add for morgan and morgan thing was honestly very creative, one of the few ads that youtubers have made that i like. Good job bro!
There was a derecho last summer in South Dakota that had 107 mph wind! 😮
I remember that, i was so scared, i live about 30 miles north of where those wind speeds were measured.
@@cosplayforever yeah I live around Sioux Falls.
You're the one channel that I get really excited when see a new upload, congrats on the sponsorship as well!
Great video!!!! That was very interesting!! You covered all of that information very thoroughly!!!!👍
NH represent!!! Lol sorry I get super excited to hear my state get mentioned in a weather video XD. But all the facts you said about Mt. Washington are 100% true. There's been many, many, MANY deaths on up Mt. Washington bc of the wind and the cold. Which is why a lot of NH natives are nervous to try and even hike it. I mean I'll be honest, it's been on my bucket list for years BUT I don't think I'll ever achieve it. It's still wild to me that the wind speeds can get that high on top of Mt. Washington. Not wind related but just recently back in February it hit the coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of NH at -108 degrees F on top of Mt. Washington. Btw overall amazing video man! I truly love watching every video you post!(:
Thanks! I love NH. Only been there once tho haha
@@SwegleStudios you're welcome man! And it's very beautiful here during the fall and winter time! During the fall, it becomes a beautiful and colorful area. And during winter, it's truly like a winter wonderland. :)
Always glad to see another upload from this channel, and a great video btw! Very relevant in my life the last week or so lol. Several days ago when that monster front pushed through my area in northeast TN/southwest VA we had about 8 hours of winds sustained between 40 and 50 mph with gusts around 60 mph. Barely rained at all, the sun was out the entire day practically, but it was literally like having a severe thunderstorms winds plow through here for 8 plus hours. Took down so many trees around here, which took out power most of the day and night until it finally passed. I can't complain too much though, over by the TN/NC border on the TN side places like Camp Creek had sustained winds of well over 60-70 mph with gusts around 90 mph. You don't wanna be in Camp Creek when the wind starts blowing lol.
Hey man I live like 2 miles east of bristol Tennessee at a elevation of about 1900 feet and here it was like a low-end ef0 and it was scary we had like siding flying by our house going at least 40 mph and at one point it got so strong my weather station had a 73 mph gust and my neighbors gutters fell off we also had multiple pines big pines snapped in half.
Bro literally got sponsored by Morgan & Morgan omfg

Love your channel dude!! Very happy I found you. Keep up the stellar job.
You should go be a comedic actor in Hollywood. Love the channel.
haha idk about that.. but thanks!
I seriously never heard of the terms used so commonly now in my life of living in an area with a long history of tornados in Arkansas...like El Nino, derecho, etc... I've learned so much since becoming interested in watching tornado chasers and weather forecasters here on youtube online. Interesting history on the study of tornados on noaa about the studies going on in the 1880's. Derecho being a term coined in 1888 in a scientific journal article published by John P. Finley U.S. Army. Very interesting read. Great job on another trek through weather history Swegle! Keep bringing us new content! Love it!

I appreciate the metric measurements! Thanks for adding them.
Congrats on your sponsorship dude...you definitely deserve it. I'm curious as to what your thoughts are of the 1968 Tracy tornado. Apparently it had 300 mph wind speeds according to various articles and news feeds. Could be worth looking into...if you want that is

😃 Speaking of SoCal, I was there all week and it was VERY windy. Thanks for always watching my videos!
@@SwegleStudios cool! I miss California, I haven’t been there since October of 2012. I lived there for 22 years and normally the weather there starts getting nicer this time of year since the rain season usually ends in April. It’s also the time of year when the hills are all nice and green, which lasts until about June and then they all start turning brown from lack of rain. Santa Ana winds can be brutal. I’m a truck driver (owner operator) and I always hated driving in them, especially with light loads. I really enjoy your videos. They are all very well researched, filled with lots of facts and interesting trivia, and I like the format as well. Keep it up, you’re doing great. The fact that your subscriber base is growing phenomenally is living proof of that.👍

Brilliant video! Thank you on behalf of your international viewers for including metric conversions... it makes content much more engaging when you don't have to do mental gymnastics! 👍 And we have it comparatively "easy" here on Earth... fastest winds in the solar system are over 1500 mph (~2400 km/hr) on Neptune... while it's a gentle _125 million_ mph (~200 million km/hr) wind circling a supermassive black hole! 🌀🌪
No problem! Solar system wind speeds could make a great video so thanks for that idea as well haha
