I just recently started sewing and I am in an actual physical class with a teacher BUT you are the only reason why I even know how to use a sewing machine as the teacher of my class leaves a lot to be desired. So thank you, thank you so much. Your instructions are detailed and clear, your voice is pleasant, your hands and nails are pretty (I know it may seem petty but that is what we are looking at most of the time so it helps that they are pleasant to look at), as someone noted there is no distracting music and your videos are done very professionally with good lighting and clear zoom in on details. Let me put it this way: the fact that I know I can find your videos on so many techniques is the only reason I have not given up sewing all together yet. It's been several years since I last made a garment, but I've rediscovered my love of sewing recently, following the passing of my mother, who taught me to sew from a young age (my direct maternal line were all skilled/professional seamstresses going back at least 6 generations). I have to say that I find your videos the most enjoyable, not only because you explain things so thoroughly, but also because in nearly every single one I've watched, I can hear my mother telling me the exact same things, almost word-for-word! 16:30 most people aren't symmetrical and if you are sewing for yourself you know which side is bigger. This is a good place to make those adjustments. For men, this is where you want to know which side you "dress" to for fitting trousers. Your attention to detail is very good.

Hello Menna, thank you so much for your lovely thoughts. Really pleased that I have been able to help you. With regard to contour darts, I personally sew the darts from one point to the other. However I generally teach students to stitch from the centre out to each point, people generally find this easier and therefore the finished dart is accurate. Hi, great tutorial thanks! I ended up here because i'm a wheelchair user and i'm working out how to alter / make jeans that fit in the sitting position. So as you said in the beginning, darts help create a 3d structure; in this case i need a curved / slightly ballooned bum area with the waist higher at the back than the front . This should help to keep the jeans on when shifting and make them comfy. Any chance you could show something that uses 3 or more darts working together? The examples i've seen have 2 vertical darts on each side and a horizontal dart on each side where the hip bends, if this makes any sense at all! I'm also hoping to do something on the knees to create a bend in the trousers that matches a seated posture, so any tips here would be great too

Hi Beatriz, it depends on the thickness of the lace. Otherwise you would need to cut away the darts from the lace and hand sew the lace, to make it look like they were never there. I am just filming some sewing with lace videos for UA-cam and a full online class (on my website) on making and sewing a lace skirt; this might help, but it probably won't launch until June. Aneka x
John Dekker Hi John, thanks for your comment. Generally patterns will ask you to do this when the dart is very large. If the dart is larger than say 2" (5cm) in total width then it might be something to think about. But cutting out the centre you will be reducing the dart bulk, obviously it can depend on the fabric you are working with too. I hope this helps? Aneka
I just made myself a pattern of a 4-panel midi-maxi skirt. I did the pattern by tracing out a replica shop-bought skirt that I’ve owned for so long. However, after completely having made the paper pattern and added seam allowance to it, I realised there was 1 dart on the waistline of each of the 2 back panels of the original skirt. I don’t want to throw away my pattern and make a new one cuz it took so long. Is there a way I add those darts to the back panels patterns that I already made? Plz help
Yes, you can measure the darts and draw them onto the pattern (coping them like you have done). Then however much the dart measures will need to be added to the side seam at the waist, and the connected back into the side seam. Otherwise if you cut out the garment and sew the dart it will be too small. Aneka
@@MadetoSew here is what I understood: say the dart base measured 2cm. I divide that in half (=1cm). Then I take the first back panel and add 1cm to either side at the waistline. I take the second back panel and so the same. That’s 4 sides in total. Now, here’s the thing, how do I finish drawing the line at each of the 4 side seams? Do I just draw a slanted line to connect it to the side seam of the skirt as far down as it takes (e.g. 5cm (that’s a random number, not true) down the side seam, a dart side edge will meet with the skirt side edge). Hopefully I got you right, please let me know :)
Hello, so you need to measure the base of the dart. Is that 1cm folded, on one half of the back? If it is 1cm folded on one half of the back you need to add 2cm (1cm folded) to the side seam at the waist on one half of the back; and then you would have the same pattern for the other side of the back. Same for the front. And blend back into the side seam to where the dart would have finished (the end of the dart); about the High Hip. I hope that explains it better?
Personally I like to press my vertical darts towards the side seam. However there are different schools of thought on this. A lot of pattern suggest pressing them towards the centre. I prefer to press towards the side seam because most people hold more rounding or bulk in the centre of the body and I find the darts sit in a little bit and usually make someone look slimmer pressing towards the side. You will need to follow the same technique I have shown here, but when you measure the length of the darts check them against their corresponding dart on the other side. What I am trying to say is that both of the darts (next to each other) won't necessarily be the same length, but you will want to get both sides symmetrical. If you have any questions let me know. nice video, but the pins should be put in perpendicular to the seam you want to sew, making it simple to pull them out as you sew, Pinning along the seam as you have done is putting pins right where your stitches need to go, so they are in your way completely.
Hi Bobbi, thanks so much for sharing. This technique is called pin basting. When you pin on the stitching line. The pins are of course removed before stitching. There are a few different techniques you can apply when pinning and everyone does them differently. So whatever works well for you. I have just found pin basting darts helps my customers to make sure they are sewing the two lines together. Aneka xx
You should be able to unpick a part of the waistband to reinsert the elastic, use a safety pin or tool to push the elastic through. Sew elastic together and then sew the waistband back closed. Does that help?
Hi Esmeralda, a lot of darts are shown with broken lines, it just depends on the pattern. These are sewn and marked using the same method. I hope this helps? Aneka x
I love this presser foot. It actually comes with Husqvarna machines, or it has done with all of the Husqvarna's I own. It is one of their standard foots I believe. Such a great foot though.

are the "last 2 stitches" past the "end pin" or the last 2 stitches should stop right at the end pin?
Thanks Anika. I once had a pattern that had me cut the dart seam open and press to each side. Is there a reason this isn't often encountered.
John Dekker Hi John, thanks for your comment. Generally patterns will ask you to do this when the dart is very large. If the dart is larger than say 2" (5cm) in total width then it might be something to think about. But cutting out the centre you will be reducing the dart bulk, obviously it can depend on the fabric you are working with too. I hope this helps? Aneka

I just made myself a pattern of a 4-panel midi-maxi skirt. I did the pattern by tracing out a replica shop-bought skirt that I’ve owned for so long. However, after completely having made the paper pattern and added seam allowance to it, I realised there was 1 dart on the waistline of each of the 2 back panels of the original skirt. I don’t want to throw away my pattern and make a new one cuz it took so long. Is there a way I add those darts to the back panels patterns that I already made? Plz help
Yes, you can measure the darts and draw them onto the pattern (coping them like you have done). Then however much the dart measures will need to be added to the side seam at the waist, and the connected back into the side seam. Otherwise if you cut out the garment and sew the dart it will be too small. Aneka
@@MadetoSew here is what I understood: say the dart base measured 2cm. I divide that in half (=1cm). Then I take the first back panel and add 1cm to either side at the waistline. I take the second back panel and so the same. That’s 4 sides in total. Now, here’s the thing, how do I finish drawing the line at each of the 4 side seams? Do I just draw a slanted line to connect it to the side seam of the skirt as far down as it takes (e.g. 5cm (that’s a random number, not true) down the side seam, a dart side edge will meet with the skirt side edge). Hopefully I got you right, please let me know :)
Hello, so you need to measure the base of the dart. Is that 1cm folded, on one half of the back? If it is 1cm folded on one half of the back you need to add 2cm (1cm folded) to the side seam at the waist on one half of the back; and then you would have the same pattern for the other side of the back. Same for the front. And blend back into the side seam to where the dart would have finished (the end of the dart); about the High Hip. I hope that explains it better?
QUESTION. so do you press the dart towards the front of body or to the back?
Personally I like to press my vertical darts towards the side seam. However there are different schools of thought on this. A lot of pattern suggest pressing them towards the centre. I prefer to press towards the side seam because most people hold more rounding or bulk in the centre of the body and I find the darts sit in a little bit and usually make someone look slimmer pressing towards the side. Hi Lynette, really pleased you enjoyed the tutorial. Thank you for your lovely comment. With regard to your question about 2 darts on either side at the back, this is quite comment. You will need to follow the same technique I have shown here, but when you measure the length of the darts check them against their corresponding dart on the other side. What I am trying to say is that both of the darts (next to each other) won't necessarily be the same length, but you will want to get both sides symmetrical. If you have any questions let me know. nice video, but the pins should be put in perpendicular to the seam you want to sew, making it simple to pull them out as you sew, Pinning along the seam as you have done is putting pins right where your stitches need to go, so they are in your way completely.

This technique is called pin basting. When you pin on the stitching line. The pins are of course removed before stitching.
There are a few different techniques you can apply when pinning and everyone does them differently. So whatever works well for you.
I have just found pin basting darts helps my customers to make sure they are sewing the two lines together.

Hi aneka mam, how to replace elastics in night pants.....
You should be able to unpick a part of the waistband to reinsert the elastic, use a safety pin or tool to push the elastic through. Sew elastic together and then sew the waistband back closed. Does that help?

What do i do if they are a dart with broken lines?
Hi Esmeralda, a lot of darts are shown with broken lines, it just depends on the pattern. These are sewn and marked using the same method. I hope this helps? Aneka x

Does anyone know what presser foot that she was using? I NEED it in my life! I can only find one with a guide ruler on the side of the foot.
I love this presser foot. It actually comes with Husqvarna machines, or it has done with all of the Husqvarna's I own. It is one of their standard foots I believe. Such a great foot though.
