Piet Viljoen: Re-rating of SA’s stocks, bonds and other assets has only just begun.

  • Veteran money manager Piet Viljoen of Merchant West has been bullish on SA assets for some months, primarily because he believes they had been too heavily discounted by a sceptical global investment community. Despite this relative optimism, he warned ahead of May 29 that were the post-election ANC to partner with the EFF “all bets are off”. In this discussion with BizNews editor Alec Hogg, the investment guru says despite a strong rally in the past few days, SA assets (the Rand, bonds, stocks) are still far too cheap - offering exceptional value right now, ahead of the coming wave of global interest.

    Our economy is afflicted by uncertainty, housing troubles, foreclosures, global shifts, and the aftermath of the epidemic, all of which contribute to instability. To restore stability and drive growth, all sectors must urgently address rising inflation, slowing GDP, and trade disruptions

      The US dollar is losing value due to inflation, while other currencies are gaining strength, creating uncertainty. Nonetheless, many people remain confident in the Dollar's perceived safety. I'm concerned that my 420K retirement funds may lose value, therefore I'm looking for other financial stability

      With my stressful career, I don't have time for investment analysis. For seven years, a fiduciary has managed my portfolio, responding to market situations, ensuring for effective navigation and informed decisions. Consider taking a similar plan of action.

    I doubt it will collapse - the will is there otherwise we wouldn't at least be where we are - this is something we as citizens will vehemently defend and are wiser stronger and more likely to read the risks and know where the dangers are than we were in the past - we at least have the experience now

    There's unfortunately not much money to be made from one of the best renewables, biogas, therefore you almost never hear of it in the mainstream.

    • @lodeleaf6401
      @lodeleaf6401 Місяць тому +1

      A very big chicken abatoir recently installed a biogas project, that takes all the waste from the abatoir to make their own biogas, along with a big generator, so they could weather the intense loadshedding. It kept them afloat at the time of loadshedding, and going forward it will save them a lot of money (both electricity costs and dangerous waste disposal costs). Maybe there's no money to be made, but money to be saved.

    • @psylentrage
      @psylentrage Місяць тому

      @lodeleaf6401 Yes, they did it. Not some big international company. That's my point. Very little maintenance, aftermarket parts, etc
      I also can find thousands of examples of people that did it for themselves. You missed my point and I didn't infer that it's not happening anywhere. Even the Saudis' universities have hundreds of research papers.
      But as soon as the research gets to a point and sees the very small return per capita, it goes nowhere. And again, never mentioned in mainstream media as a proper all weather all season alternative that's always accessible. You see? Not much rare earth metals in it, and not even that much copper.
      You can find MANY DIY videos right here on UA-cam, but how many commercial companies actually producing? Let alone as some sort of green initiative to be incorporated into building plans.
      Yeah no

    • @lodeleaf6401
      @lodeleaf6401 Місяць тому +1

      @@psylentrage Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer. I'm not talking about any old abatoir down the road. It's the largest chicken producer in the country. So it's not a DIY project, they had an entire engineering team and it took months. It was a pilot project at one of their (huge) abatoirs, and they are looking at design improvements to roll out at their other (huge) abatoirs.
      But yes, I get your point, which is why I made mine: perhaps it's not a profitable venture to be a dedicated producer of biogas, but instead it might be profitable for specific companies to use similar methods to turn their waste into fuel. It certainly was profitable for the engineers who worked on the project in question, and maybe they can offer more streamlined solutions to the next company that wants to implement that.
      Perhaps the profit lies not in the end product (as with traditional fuels), but in the design/installation expertise, and in the cost savings when it is done on-site using waste.

    • @psylentrage
      @psylentrage Місяць тому

      @lodeleaf6401 I think we are talking past each other. You are right about the engineers. And this is where they, usual corporatists don't get it. Or maybe they do and it's not a worry as many of them are producing solar and wind turbines. And hey, we are always discovering more oil and gas deposits, so still plenty of money to be made.
      Point is, WHO makes the money in biogas won't be the normal status quo and they are not threatened one or way or another by it.

    • @lodeleaf6401
      @lodeleaf6401 Місяць тому

      @@psylentrage yep, agreed :-)
      Biznews actually just released an interview with the same chicken producer I mentioned and they briefly discussed the biogas project, if you are interested. Not a mainstream adoption, but a start at raising awareness.

    B rating, junk status of South African bonds doesn't mean anything to people who do not have a slice of those bonds (money or investments). A majority of Africans SA citizens have nothing to lose when that happens, all thanks to neo liberal policies of the DANC.

    You are going to lose more money.... The only way the criminal ANC would agree to a deal with the DA, was if the DA agreed not to prosecute the criminals in the ANC.... The DA criminals could not wait to get their snouts in then trough of corruption... It turns out that the DA was never opposed to corruption, they were simply opposed to the fact that they could not share in the proceeds of looting...

    The PA is a colourful and controversial character. I just love how these racists will do and say anything to glorify their racist DA who git the same votes they got in 2019. Now fact is if voters wanted a DA government they would have voted DA.

    Speak about the overtly racist DA MP Renaldo Gouws.
    If the DA fails to expel him from parliament, the entire GNU is at risk.
    This actually shows that South Africans of European stock have learned nothing since the fall of Apartheid 🤔

      Gouws needs to go I think we can agree on that but if it’s racism you are taking about then what is your take on the hate speech that’s been spewed by ANC Ministers over the past few years. It cannot be a one sided arrangement and statements like “standing on the throat of whiteness” is racist hate speech but where were you on that. Idiots like Mantashe, Cele, Patel and others have been shoving their racist opinions down our throats and we are not supposed to respond. Malema has almost called for white genocide but nothing happened to him and the left just lets that slide.
