I bought my first Makita tool in the mid-90s when they were still fairly new to UK. I’ve never changed brands since because nothing I ever bought from them proved to be a mistake. Along the way I bought and ditched various other brand tools always ending up with a Makita replacement. Of course now it’s mostly battery powered tools and once you’ve bought a battery system it’s really expensive to swap brands. They aren’t always the best in any reviews but they consistently get the job done and this little router is no different. Mine has just kept on going with never a grumble and I’d recommend it 100% to anyone looking for a simple reliable trim router.
I agree completely with the criticisms you make. I have both a Makita and the "knock off" Katsu and they are used in trade joinery work and have become a very useful part of my tool kit. The other issue (for me) is the lack of a fine depth adjuster mechanism for use on the plunge base, but I am working on that A couple of additional points: the fixed trimmer base takes Porter-Cable threaded guide bushes directly, the plunge base takes the larger guide bushes off the Makita RP1801/RP2301 routers but Makita do sell an adaptor which allows use with the P-C type guide bushes. Trend sell P-C guide bushes in 16 and 30mm use for use with their templates. Axminster Power Tools in the UK also sell a set of metric P-C compatible guide bushes. The plunge base can also be used with the side fences from the deWalt DW613/615/621/622, Trend T5, Elu MOF96/OF97/OF1, etc as they are compatible with the Makita RP1110 style fence you show. There is now an 18 volt cordless version of the motor available
Just bought a good used basic version of this router (has no accessories). Your video was perfect for me and now I know not to use it in a new router table I'm installing, as first planned and will use a large router I have here. Thanks very much Andreas, much appreciated.
Andreas Kalt + I have two of this router and I is very pleased with them. One is mounted in router table with Matthias Wendels Tilting Router table. Its works very fine. You forget you can mount the fence to the trim router part as well. I have screwed on a piece of wood on the fence so I have longer fence and its work fine. I have also used the guide bush a lot. I have also a Bosch GMF 1600 CE Professional Twin Base Router and a Bosch POF 800 ACE but Makita is more handy
I have one of these routers. I haven’t used it yet, I’m waiting on getting the plunge router base. I’m using it for Lutherie (guitars) and I may buy several more of the basic routers so that I can leave the base and tool set up permanently for the task. I want one for edge trimming, one for use in the binding and purfling jig, one for plunge routing the saddle, and one for routing the headstock. I have a larger porter cable router and I may dedicate it to a router table to rout the slots in the neck for the truss rods. Thanks for sharing this very comprehensive review. Take care and stay well.
Andreas Kalt I meant to say Andreas, that I always find your review vids very helpful. I bought my table saw largely on the strength of your recommendation. I like it too!
The straight guide also fits into the trimm base, is mounted in place of the guide with the bearing. Tilt base I use with straight trim bits to chamfer at any angle. Great review Andreas, I do not have to do anymore ;)
I have the exact same one and i also use mine all the time, also what you said about the dust collection, mine is different as it covers the opening and the collection is good with it. The other thing i want to say is that mine didn't come with 2 spanners only the 1, but the red button and locking the spindle has been good with mine with no probs. The only difference with yours to mine is that i bought the set separately, as the months and build went by and maybe that was why the dust collection is better, i dunno anyway i still love mine, great video. Barry (ENG)
A brilliant review. I bought this router with the plunge accessory and the instructions were not the best to follow, I was also going to buy a router table but after your review I see now why I should not I will just buy the guides
Nice video, I just purchased the same kit, but I don't have any trouble changing bits with pushing the red button. Just make sure the pin will go into the shaft before you loosen the bit. Nice Router for most common jobs.
Andreas, thanks for update on router. I just purchased the Makita router as I liked the smaller footprint for trimming mostly cutting boards. I’ve started trying out different woodcraft and keeps me occupied during these times.
It's a great little router. I bought one second hand about two years ago and I love it and use it all the time. I got a cheap Triton with a Rockler plate to mount as table router on my Bosch GTS-10 table saw (I think I remember you have one too) but everything above the table is for the Makita. Also the very long power cable is a ++ point! Thanks for the video.
I'm a late subscriber and started browsing trough your selection. good stuff Andreas. I notice you use the flat side of your router to follow against the fence. If you use the round side, the router bit will always stay the same distance away from the fence even if you wiggel a little. That is if you stay against the fence obviously :D (the center of a circle or wheel wont change in relation tho the surface if you roll it around) When you wiggle on the flat side, the router will go away from the fence. This is a tip I found on youtube and has helped me a lot!
Oh no, not at all - I appreciate the tip and hadn’t thought of that before. The flat side feels more stable but the round side might be the better option. Thanks again for the tip and welcome to the channel!
Hello! Thank you for the video. Tell me - what is the diameter of the milling cutter you use and will there be enough power for this cutter to work with cutters of 8 mm diameter (3 / 8in)?
Do you mean at 6:42? That was a 19 mm bit. It has worked fine, but I've cut in two or three passes, depending on the depth of the groove - taking out about 4 - 5 mm of depth in each passing.
Hi Andreas. I used the tilting frame and I was able to make raised panel doors. Could you make a video about the frame? It's an easy alternative if you dont feel like making a router table!
Thanks Andreas, I really appreciate this video because you answered the questions I had about my new Makita router, and now I understand how to use it. You're a champion ☆☆☆
Great review, thanks! you've helped me decide to buy the cordless version. It'll be a great addition to my Bosch 12v edge router (which your review of also helped me to make that decision).
I had the same problem with the plunge lock flip lever on my (other brand) router and was able to fix it by tightening the lever’s attachment screw. Any chance the same can be done here? It looks like it has the same screw.
Great set - I have it, also the extra precision edge guide that he has on the table and would agree with everything he says in the video. Ideal jack of all trades small router. There is also a clone by Katsu which is functionally identical to the router motor here and works with all the accessories - sometimes useful to have a second tool so you don't have to change bit so often. I got my own 8mm steel rods for the edge guide and they work fine. I also fit a wooden block on the other end of the rods to support the whole assembly when working on the edge of a board. I screwed the simple base (not the plunge one) into a board for a primitive table solution while I am still waiting to build my proper table... If I didn't have it I would buy it again.
Hallo Andreas, Sehr interessanten Review. Waas kat deone Erfahrung hieruit ? M. fr. Gr. Maarten
Great review. I'm into buying this nifty thing in the basic edition with only the trim router as I have a plunge router already with more motor power. I had other ones in my mind but looked at the Makita and decide it would be on the top 5 list. Mainly because the housing is full aluminum and the product seems solid.
I'm currently browsing various videos to figure out whether other people have the same problem with the depth rod on the plunge base changing depths on it's own and how to fix it. So far it seems I'm all alone with that problem and it annoys the hell out of me: No matter how tight I screw the fastener knob, the vibration of the router manages to loosen everything up (even the microadjustment scale spins like crazy) so in combination with the bad plunge lock lever it is super easy to end up at the wrong cut depth, either because the locked height managed to up, or worse, the rod changed position upwards so you're going deeper than anticipated. I'm already considering getting yet another router just for proper plunging use. :(
Sehr gelungenes Video.
Hi Andreas, I just popped into your channel while factfinding... Great Job, Great Skills, Great English. Respect & compliments. Gonna watch this closer. cheers from Lxbg.
Of course, I thought I had put it in the video description but I hadn’t. kit.co/holzhandwerk_ak/makita-router-and-accessories (Now also in the video description)
I very recently purchased the Makita RT0701C router, the only other router I have is a Craftsman router that I bought new about 30 years ago. You show a cheaper parallel fence for the Makita that you adapt by changing out rods. Can you provide me with the Makita part number for the fence? I can't find a fence that looks like what you are showing. Very good review. Thanks
are imperial collets available please? and how far does the router plunge please? my current router has a problem that it does not plunge all the way down and so some small bits are practically unusable as they dont reach the work surface - does the collet plunge down right to the end of the router? thanks
That’s actually a bit elusive. For a while I could find it on amazon, then it disappeared and - even using its part number - I couldn’t find it anywhere anymore. Sorry.
Thanks for the very helpful and comprehensive review. Did you ever have a problem with the 8mm collet that was included? I have read reviews where it is mentioned that occasionally the 8mm bits come loose because the collet has only 1 "gap" at the side that allows tightening compared to the 6mm that has 4 which seems to work fine.
@@holzhandwerk_ak Hi, does your 8mm collet have four gaps??? Really? It would be great if Makita started making a new 4-gaps 8mm collet... Please, could you send a photo? Or link where is 8mm collet with 4 gaps available for purchase? Thank you!!!
The plunge base allows you to plunge down in the wood vertically. If you did that without the small base, you’d have to lift the whole machine and slowly lower it into the wood. With a fast-turning bit, controlled entry would not be possible. You can sometimes see people plunge with a small base in some videos but they tilt in and only use a very small bit. That's a possible compromise but limited in its use.
Hi Andreas, please can you tell me how this works with your CamVac, I bought 2 Cam Vacs based on you video a while back, I wondered if you need an adapter or whether it connects onto the 2.5 inch hose which I’ve noticed you use ? Thanks you, terrythemaker 👍
I don’t use this with the CamVac because that hose is very large and therefor clunky on the router. I use the router with my second shopvac which only has a 38 mm hose - and even that is a bit unwieldy on the router but it works.
Andreas Kalt Thanks Andreas, I’ve managed to pick up a 4 inch adapter which is connected to a regular vacuum size hose hopefully that will work, it’s on the Record Power website 👍🏼
you can buy a Katsu (exactly the same) at a fraction of the price. but if you buy all the bases then the price difference is not that big i think. some genuine makita bases can be found cheaper than Katsu branded.
I am thinking about getting this router, but have some questions. Have there been jobs you've need to do and this router hasn't had enough power??? Like could it route hardwoods like white oak or hickory? Also, can you change out the collet for 1/4, 3/8, and/or 1/2 inch bits? Thanks!
Excellent review. Especially given the fact that you used it for 3 years. It gives it a lot more value compared to out of the box evaluation. Just a simple question : do you use 6mm bits or 8mm ?
Sollte man ausnutzen! 👍
The max depth depends on the router bit you use (length of shaft) and of cutting head. The plunge base doesn’t add extra depth, probably even a bit less than with the one-hand base.
Hello Andreas. I also bought this router a few months ago and im having a hard time to find a compatible router table or even a plate for it. Have you any recomendations? Thanks!!
I don’t think this router is very suitable for a router table since its plunge depth is not very big - but I suppose you could buy a plate from Kreg which - if I remember correctly - have plates that you drill yourself for various routers.
Hello Andres nice review, at the moment I want to buy a Router small like that, but I'm not 100% sure of the Makita that cost 189 euro in Amazon or the Bosch GKF 600 Professional that cost 140, I own Bosch GOF 1600 but for some Woodworking is so heavy, what do you recomend? Greetings Andres
Hi Andres, I don’t know the Bosch but it is only a trim router. With the Makita you get a lot more flexibility for a little more money. So if you consider your other router too heavy, I suppose you’ll want to try some work with the Makita and its plunge unit. So I’d go for the Makita. Andreas
You’re welcome! Glad I could help. If you buy using the following link it will register for my account: kit.com/holzhandwerk_ak/makita-router-and-accessories Thanks for your support!
Great video. I have the cordless version and absolutely love it. I like that bag insert for the systainer. Is there a part number listed on it by any chance? I can't seem to find it online. It looks useful for many things besides the router setup. Thanks and subbed!
Thank you for this great review. I really like this router and I’m considering to buy it. Do you know if plunge base is compatible with Bosch FSN OFA adapter for their guide rail? I already have one and this information would help me make my decision. Keep on going with great videos!
According to the manual of the FSN OFA www.bosch-professional.com/binary/ocsmedia/optimized/full/o237767v21_1_609_92A_3AB_1304.pdf it is NOT compatible - only two other Makita routers are listed (bottom of page 2). However, maybe the list is not complete - it would be worth checking out.
@@holzhandwerk_ak Thanks! That's what I also found on the web. I thought that maybe you have one of two mentioned compatible Makita's routers so that you can compare bases. Anyway thanks and continue with great work!
I don’t have a part number and it seems that this fence is no longer available -this one, though, looks exactly like the one I have even though it’s by DeWalt. From my experience, the distance for the bars are standardised so you might try this one: amzn.to/3o3kOq2
It’s a plate with a little collar that sticks out of the bottom of the base plate so you can push it agains the edge of a template to rout out a shape in your work piece.
A review after 3 years of use. How darn refreshing. Also in depth and honest flaws with fixes. Good work!
Thanks! Glad you like it.

Don't know if this was done deliberately, but I like it when you put on the big basket and the music gets slow and "heavy" like in "Beware!"

Sehr gelungenes Video.
Thanks mate. Your video has helped me to decide to buy the router.
I’m glad to hear it! Happy woodworking!
Hi Andreas, I just popped into your channel while factfinding... Great Job, Great Skills, Great English. Respect & compliments. Gonna watch this closer. cheers from Lxbg.
Thanks for your kind words, Camille!
Can you link to or let me know what the base trim fence you suggested.
Of course, I thought I had put it in the video description but I hadn’t.

(Now also in the video description)
Thanks. Low power (710W) is not a problem?
Hasn’t been a problem so far.
Thanks
I've put it in this kit: kit.com/holzhandwerk_ak/makita-router-and-accessories, I think the part number is 194935-6 but I’m not quite sure.
Thanks for a very succinct and informative presentation. I am in the market for just this tool and you have helped me decide.
Thanks. I’m glad I could help.
Kleine handliche Oberfräse, danke fürs zeigen!
Gerne!
The video really starts at 3:50
How is it with bushings and inlay bushings for use with patterns?
They’re available. I think they even came included with my router.
are imperial collets available please? and how far does the router plunge please? my current router has a problem that it does not plunge all the way down and so some small bits are practically unusable as they dont reach the work surface - does the collet plunge down right to the end of the router? thanks
I don’t know about imperial collets. But the router plunges all the way down till the collet is flush with the bottom of the base.
Ended up buying it a few months ago and i really love it .. you can find the 1/4 inch imperial collet off amazon - bought one recently
Great router with features out the wazoo but I can't find a radius fence to cut circles. Any ideas?
I don’t know of any Makita radius fence but if you search on UA-cam, you’ll find plenty of videos for building a radius fence yourself.
@@holzhandwerk_ak Yep, thanks for the response.
I don't see the link for that bigger edge guide, what's the link to that ?
That’s actually a bit elusive. For a while I could find it on amazon, then it disappeared and - even using its part number - I couldn’t find it anywhere anymore. Sorry.
Good review!
Thanks!
Is the bit height adjustable on the offset base?
Yes, it can be adjusted on all bases.
Just got this model, been wanting one for years. Now I'm waiting for bits to arrive ;-)
Enjoy!
My 8 mm collet has four gaps.
@@holzhandwerk_ak Hmm, interesting. Did it come with the router or was it a separate purchase? Thanks for the reply.
It came with the router. But you can buy collets for a few bucks.
Thanks for the review. Any thoughts on the build quality?
It’s good. Haven’t had any trouble with it so far.
@@holzhandwerk_ak Thanks for the reply and the info. I'm planning on getting my first router soon, so the information helps.
Super! Dann viel Erfolg!
2:13 This will probably sound dumb, but what is the purpose of the plunge base?? Couldn't I just do the same thing with the normal base?
Andreas Kalt
Thanks Andreas, I’ve managed to pick up a 4 inch adapter which is connected to a regular vacuum size hose hopefully that will work, it’s on the Record Power website 👍🏼
I’ve got the router with only the trim base. Did you find any chamfer bits that fit as the hole is quite small
I have two regular chamfer bits that both fit.
you can buy a Katsu (exactly the same) at a fraction of the price. but if you buy all the bases then the price difference is not that big i think. some genuine makita bases can be found cheaper than Katsu branded.
I doubt that it is exactly the same. It may look identical on the outside but very likely contains cheaper components.
I am thinking about getting this router, but have some questions. Have there been jobs you've need to do and this router hasn't had enough power??? Like could it route hardwoods like white oak or hickory? Also, can you change out the collet for 1/4, 3/8, and/or 1/2 inch bits? Thanks!
I haven’t worked in oak yet but with beech and that worked fine. You can change the collet.
Excellent review. Especially given the fact that you used it for 3 years. It gives it a lot more value compared to out of the box evaluation. Just a simple question : do you use 6mm bits or 8mm ?
Thanks. 8mm bits.
Sollte man ausnutzen! 👍
Ja, Appi. Das Ding lohnt sich in der Werkstatt!
Nice case. It comes with a fabric case on Amazon now. Would much prefer the hard plastic.
Quite right. You can buy the plastic crates separately, though, if you want.
Good review
Do i get extra depth with the plunge base and what will the max depth be
The max depth depends on the router bit you use (length of shaft) and of cutting head.
Andreas
Andreas Kalt thanks so much for your answer, I will buy the Makirta Router maybe at Tuesday, do you have affiliate link in Amazon.de?
You’re welcome! Glad I could help. If you buy using the following link it will register for my account: kit.com/holzhandwerk_ak/makita-router-and-accessories
Thanks for your support!
Great review! Thanx!
Thanks for your feedback!
Anyway thanks and continue with great work!
will this be powerfull enough for teak
I’ve never worked with teak. But it’s powerful enough for oak. Maybe that helps.
@@holzhandwerk_ak ok thx very much
I cant insert 6.35mm bits. Why? In manual say that bits can be insert. All my bits are 6.35mm
> www.bosch-professional.com/de/de/products/fsn-ofa-1600Z0000G
Would you recommend this for 5/4” Deck handrails?
Sorry, since I don’t know how exactly you want to use the router I can’t tell.
Andreas, great vid! How would you compare your Makita router with the battery version of the same machine, if you can comment at all? BR
I’ve never used the battery-powered version of this router so I can’t give you any tips on that. Sorry.
Very informative, thanks!
Thank you!
Do you know part numbers for the micro adjust fence? I followed your kit.co links, but they don't work anymore, or don't work here in the U.S.?
I don’t have a part number and it seems that this fence is no longer available -this one, though, looks exactly like the one I have even though it’s by DeWalt. From my experience, the distance for the bars are standardised so you might try this one: amzn.to/3o3kOq2
Thanks alot good man.. You really helped me out getting started with my great little tool I just purchased
How would a guide bush work
It’s a plate with a little collar that sticks out of the bottom of the base plate so you can push it agains the edge of a template to rout out a shape in your work piece.
