    It is high demand because the Yamazaki and Hibiki are really good expressions. Also I think the Japanese Oak or Mizunara casks impart of very unique different taste that gives many Japanese whiskies its unique flavor. I understand it it is pretty costly as well, doesn't last as long as American and European Oak, so I am sure that is contributing to the shortages as well.

    Very informative. I recently got into whisky learning something new everyday. I learned about you from Whiskey vault UA-cam channel. Very interesting to hear exactly the same thing in different language, though from I guess American stand point. You explained very clearly and I learned something new today! Thank you!

    Good and informative review, Erik. I like Japanese whiskies, and have tried several, but the current prices are excessive with regard to price/value. This is a shame as I used to enjoy the Hibiki Japanese Harmony which just a couple of years ago was readily available in my area for around $55.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies

    • @welshtoro3256
      @welshtoro3256 5 років тому

      I completely agree Frank. I'm very fond of 'real' Japanese whisky but it's just too expensive for what you get. I don't think Hibiki Harmony is worth $55. There's better for the money. (Harmony replaced Hibiki 12 - for the same price - which certainly was worth it.)

    Interesting Erik, thanks and I love the editing...
    I have to disagree though about the NIKKA From the Barrel, which existed way before the aged casks shortage at least in Europe (so the date of 2018 for its appearance in the USA surprises me a lot...). I see this bottle in France since around 2005...
    And I am, like you, also disappointed about the very "light" (to say the least) regulations, that helps to confuse unexperienced consumers who can get non-Japanese whisky thinking they are so (...) well spotted on this, Erik...They have to do their "aggiornamento" like Scots & Americans did...

    Cool vid as always. A slight correction Hibiki is primarily a Yamazaki distillery whiskey hence its very famiar flavour profile to Yamazaki 12 and 18.
    Highly recommend visiting the Yamazaki distillery you can try all thecbig names like Yamazaki 18, Hibiki 21 and 30 plus Hakashu 12 and 18 for very very cheap...very cheap.
    Keep the great vids coming...

    By the time their supply meets the current demand, due to the fical nature of the market, demand will greatly decrease. They won't be seen as fashionable as they do now. The everyday whisky enthusiast will be pretty happy though.

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies I'm happy to hear that. If you do come to Canada I would highly recommend visiting Hiram Walker in Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit, the most barrels in North America) and if possible the west coast of British Columbia (excellent single malt coming out of there), many other places but that would be a great start! I am hoping to visit Kentucky when it ends haha. Cheers!

    Interesting and timely review. First thing to say is that I love Japanese whisky but what is on sale today does not bare comparison to what was available a few years ago for reasonable money. None of the NAS from Suntory or Nikka is as good as their former age statements. However, we are where we are. The NAS is decent but overpriced. Will Suntory and Nikka ever release a 12 year age statement (at 43%) below £50 ever again? I doubt it. Is there a Japanese whisky below £100 that is as good as Clynelish 14 for example (or enter Scotch of your choice)? I like the fact that good Japanese whisky has a style of its own and is different to Scotch but I will not be taken for a mug and pay silly money for it. Nikka From The Barrel is okay but we're clutching at straws. The old Miyagikyo 10 is a far superior whisky. I also don't think we should get in to dubious concepts about 'Japanese culture'. Suntory, today, is a global company selling all kinds of goods and Japanese whisky is as capitalist as every other culture. I think that capitalism (call it market forces if you like) will ensure that good Japanese whisky will remain a premium product and inexpensive stuff will be mediocre. It's not the end of the world. Those that enjoyed it before 2015 had a good time but there's plenty of other good whisky out there. Cheers Erik. WT

    Wonder if there will be a backlash, due to the lack of regulations, when consumers will buy less Japanese whisky.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  5 років тому +1

      Only if they continue on the current course. But, if history repeats itself (and I think it does) then they will follow the same trajectory as Scotland and the USA in formulating whisky regulations.

    Even here in Japan, the local whiskeys are difficult to find (you will find only the little bottle ones in the convenience stores), in rare situation you'll find the regular 500ml bottles but they're much more expensive than imported whiskeys from Scotland and the US. :(

    I love Nikka from the Barrel but doesn't have Ben Nevis?

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  2 роки тому

      That seems to be the case.... Whisky Advocate named Nikka from the Barrel their #1 whisky of the year a couple years ago. Now that the cat is out of the bag that it is from Ben Nevis and the recent changes in Japanese Whisky industry it will probably be labeled differently.

  • @smashexentertainment676

    I don't know what you mean by shortage, but there's a Japanese whiskey in almost every Japanese store and almost every local store in my country has few kinds of imported whiskey, even pretty rare ones and I've never sen them go out of stock. And all of that is fairly priced, more than half is at least twice lower than scotch. And if one doesn't know, he I might even think it's a low shelf booze. It's not in abundance like bourbon and scotch here, but that's for the same reason why imported whiskey in Japan is rare.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  3 роки тому

      But is it REAL Japanese Whisky? A lot of it isn’t actually made in Japan but is imported from Canada and Scotland.
