Many don't realize it but theater performances are so powerful they legitimstely have the power to save people's lives. I myself when I was younger was in a horrific situation with abusive relatives. The theater was where I found solace seeing all these shows and connecting with the stories. It saved my life at the time. So, thank you again for all you do each and every single day! Much love!

I do remember a time when the theater did state if people were more than 15 minutes late you would not be seated, that's why people were not late to the theater years ago!!! Now, going to the theater, opera, or ballet is no different than going to a sporting event. It's very sad. I remember as a child, when my parents went to the theater, opera,or ballet; my Mother dressed to the nines, beautiful black dress, pearl earrings, and necklace, spiked heels, black opera gloves and a mink stole. My Father was in a black tuxedo, pressed white shirt, with cufflinks, bow tie and cummerbund, with black patent leather shoes. They looked fabulous. I miss those days. People knew how to dress and had wonderful manners. I've tried to teach my daughters etiquette, grace, and manners. In my opinion these three things never go out of style. Unfortunately, they do seem to be a thing of the past. Evidently we need to have etiquette classes again.

Last October, my friend and I were late for a show, due to a problem on the NYC subway. When we finally got to the theater, we were 30 minutes late. The usher said could we stand in the back until intermission, then we could claim our seats. This should be the rule across the board IF the theater decides to even let you in...

I've been seeing theater shows regularly from a young age, and after I was developed enough to focus and control my bladder, I have never felt the need to eat during a show, get up to pee at a time besides intermission or talk about anything while the show is on. I give a standing ovation when the performer do their final bows, use the restroom during every intermission, and generally do everything I can to avoid ruining the theatergoing experience for others. Some people just have no class, and it really shows

Coco, I've loved you since Trick. I'm so sorry you had such a lousy experience at the theater. This video did not make me laugh. It made me sad. I had no idea it had gotten so bad. Based on the comments I'm reading here, it appears, I'm afraid, that you are preaching to the choir. Not that I mind. I'm glad that you shared this with us.
One time years ago I was at the SF Opera, a regular opera-goer at the time. During the first act, a woman sitting in front of me received a phone call and took it, without leaving her seat. It was from the babysitter. I let it go. Then a few minutes later, she received another call and took it. I let it go. Then she started dialing and then I'd had enough. I leaned forward and in a low voice said "Excuse me... You do not make phone calls while at the Opera. If you need to make a phone call you go out in the hall, or you wait 'til intermission". She was confused but too embarrassed to argue. She started to put her phone away and I said "Turn your phone off!" And she did. That put an end to it.
I say raise the ticket prices to keep the riff-raff out.

Of all the crazy and not so crazy videos that Coco sends us , this one was probably the most thought provoking and relevant one I’ve seen .
All the points are valid , and well taken .
“HORDES of people ! The crinkling of the popcorn ! The peanut M&Ms come flying out during ‘Sunrise Sunset ‘ ! SIPPY CUPS !”
I’m still chuckling at the presentation of the video , but she makes perfect sense. We’re losing respect for everything .
    It’s all about “us”.
    So sad .......

As an individual with misophonia, I felt the irritation in this video deeply. I’ve had multiple bad experiences at the theater. People have no courtesy or respect.

Jesus tap dancin Christ! I would have been livid. This video needs to be seen by every single person, especially the ppl running the theatre. I've never heard of such nonsense, casually selling snacks and drinks like it's just going to the movies on a Sunday afternoon! And walking out while the performers are taking their bows, omg. I feel you Coco. And guess what? THAT BOTHERS ME TOO! I hope you write a letter.

OMG - these things used to be FORBIDDEN. It's live THEATRE, not a hockey game. Honestly, in the past you would be thrown out...and if late, not allowed in until the 2nd act. People want to do that, they should just go to the latest superhero movie at the Cineplex. Sorry you went through that

One of her very best. And so true. She has fabulous taste. The opening of Fiddler is indeed one of the greatest openings of any musical. I wonder if she saw the Lincoln Center production, directed by Bart Sher. That was utterly epic. I was blown away for days.

THANK YOU! Just when I think I can't love you or your rants any more, you go and talk about this :P.
It reminds me of when I went to watch a play at school and the entire class was respectful and quiet and enjoying the show. The most noise we made was writing notes (it was for drama class). But for the entire play these old ladies were infront of us gossiping like it was a market cafe. Such disrespect...and from someone mature...
Outside of medical reasons, food and drink should be banned and the lights and everything shouldn't come back on until the cast has taken a bow.

Theaters and concert halls are hallowed grounds. I can't believe how people behave in these venues. People who talk need to be slapped...some people have to hear the sound of their own voices constantly. STAY HOME!!! When I attend any kind of performance I'm totally connected to the performer/s. Amazing.

People shouldn't eat in theaters...period. Whether it's stage or movies (yes, movies) food is distracting. I had a film professor who broke me of that bad habit. It's not just distracting to others, but to yourself. You don't even realize it, until you give up the popcorn habit.

There are UA-cams of operas ending and Joan Sutherland, Renata Scotto, Pavarotti taking curtain calls and sure enough there are some people rushing for exits. It's amazing to have actually witnessed such legends in person and getting out first is more important.

Respect and decorum are commodities rarely found anymore, sadly. In my experience, when you have respect and politness you are looked at like a fucking imbecile, because it's such a foreign concept to the rest of the populous that one may come into contact with on any given day. It doesn't impede my manners and respect, but it certainly makes one feel like it would be better to just stay home not have to deal with people unless necessary.
**side note** (I'm 32, but I look and sound like a teenager, so its especially daunting for me because people mistake my decorum and condescend to me as though I were a child. 😂 It gets old.)

People have no respect for live theater or even movies. I blame those daytime trash tv shows that promote terrible English and haughty rude behavior. 23 years ago I was in a nice movie theater in a big cineplex in Los Angeles and rude people talked and hollered throughout the whole movie. It just ruined it for me. It was $10 for the movie ticket and I felt cheated. I was so angry. I know just how you feel. Just think of the hours that those actors, dancers, and musicians spent perfecting their craft. I am right there with you. I'm much older than you and even though I am from a small East Texas town, my mother taught me how to behave in public. I barely want to go to a movie anymore because I come home seething with anger. I adore you and thank you for trying to educate the clods on how to behave.

It’s the fucking Millennials. They were never taught theatre etiquette. The lines between movie theaters and classical theatre are so blurred that the bad habits that have overcome the multiplex are spreading into the theatre world.
Not only cell phones, talking, noisy snacks but even the way they dress. No longer is it a suit & tie, or a sports coat but you’d think they just arrived from the beach or a family picnic. Girls in shorts, guys in sandals, it’s no longer a “night at the theatre” it’s “date night at the playhouse”.
So sad, a whole generation without any class or culture.

  • @leetbaumann

This is amazing. Same things happened when I saw Wicked and Rent. People started leaving like this was some damn movie theater.
And the people who that that’s ok are the ones that ruin other things. They’re the ones that yell at service workers. They’re the ones who brings all of their children to a store and ALLOW them to run around screaming. They’re the ones that pull up alongside you at a traffic light (in the right turn lane or area) so that they can zip dangerously in front of you after it turns green.
    Sad times...

I’m with you Miss Coco! I have to ask, the bathroom you recorded this in, was it the Theater bathroom where you saw the show? You were so incensed by that circus around you, I don’t know how you sat through it, I would have changed my seat. Thank you for this post, certainly some of society has lost its respect for The Stage and the people in front of the curtain and behind it. Much Love To You,

I had a friend that kept tilting a box of snow caps in her mouth and the noise was irritating that I finally knocked the box out of her hand when she put it up to her mouth and snow caps went everywhere. Oh,I also forgot to mention that she decided to unwrape the cellophane when the show started.
