I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. A lot of the chai walas (roadside tea salesmen) came from these villages and regions of Pakistan, and they would often have various stones next to their stalls. They would train and compete amongst themselves in their free time. Its cool to have a western spotlight on these traditional lifts.

The reason why they catch the stone with one hand is because of the rule of the lift. While Lifting the stone no part of the body should be in contact with the stone except the palm. Also while lifting they are not supposed to use their thumbs.
The 1 arm Stone Snatch was from the Southern Part of India and these lifts are common in the surroundings I live. And because of persons like you, traditional lifting is being recognized. Thanks for covering these things, bro. Thank you so much.

just goes to show there are truly unlimited paths towards fitness, and the culture you grow up in will heavily influence the type of physical strength that you value/develop. If you are experiencing a plateau in your lifts, then consider looking around the globe among different cultures for "new" (new to you) training methods. The body is a common point among all people, so all cultures will have their own history/ideology of physical development.

Absolutely love these different traditional strength sports and events around the world. Like the different Scottish stones of strength or Kviahellan in Húsafell, Iceland. I wonder what else is out there. If strongman went truly global, I'd love to see some of these things find a place in the sport (well, the ones that are more easily implemented, I guess).

Just a quick note, there are extra points for reps while stone is properly lifted
if you have done a proper lift and then sit down in that position to get back up again.
Each time you do, you get extra points.
That is why some people who are confident enough do it, as it requires more effort.
If you see the numbering like this
    3:30 or 3/30
    this is what it means
    3 x 40kg + 30 kg = 150 kg
15:56 says "5 mun" (mun pronounced the same way as mum) 1 mun = 40 kg
    which means 200kg stone
Edit: I saw someone say its 38 kg but you may also google 1 mun weight in kg, it will tell you 40kg

And you want me to believe that a 5'8'' 110 kg plus guy did that. Hafthor is 6'9'' and weighs 200 plus kg and he lifted The Húsafell Stone which weighs 186 kg, the same way as The Gama is said to have lifted that 1200 kg stone. And if you watch that you can see that it's not light for Hafthor.

The last stone which was labelled '5' is 200KG. The weight classification on the stones are a very traditional punjabi weight system. They use the term 'Maan' which equates to 40KG per unit. So if a stone say's 5 it means its 5 Maan which is 200kg. Or if the stone reads 4 30, that would mean 4x40 (4 Maan)=160kg + 30kg = 190kg

    Really enjoyed this one
It would be great to take weightlifters/powerlifters to try these events
What would be even more interesting is to bring these guys into a normal gym and see what they can deadlift/snatch/C&J etc

The weight is mostly measured here as KG instead of Lbs. The thing you might see on some stones as 4/10 or 3/20 is the unique ratio system where first number represent 1 mann which is 40kg and the number after is the addition to it. So 4/10 stone is 4*40 + 10kg = 170kg. For additional detail you might want to check Martin Licis chanel where he covered different aspect in detail.

This is so cool! In a few of those clips, the blocks were marked in characters that looked like kannada (correct me if I'm wrong any kannadigas out there). So I looked that up and what do you know! Those were stone lifters from Karnataka (A state in the south of India). I can't believe I didn't know this was a thing in my own state. It seems like this is a Southeast Asian thing! Definitely going to learn more about this and do what I can to support it! Thanks Zack!!

I love these things, traditional strength sports are always so bad ass! I've seen the weightlifting technique for the atlas stones but never the one had cleans and the rectangle stone to shoulder. Absolutely wild!

In the Punjab region of Pakistan and India, the term '4/20' refers to four Mann, which is an old regional unit of weight. Another traditional unit of measurement used in this region is the 'ratti.' It is important to note that '4/20' does not mean 420 pounds. But weight on the sides is in kg and we can use that for reference!!

You know the ancient Greek dude Bybon who allegedly put a 300 lb stone overhead one handed? Must have been something like this!
And that one hand swing technique used to be done in the west as well except with dumbells and kettlebells. Herman Goerner did a ~210 lb swing with two kbs in one hand then using his free hand added a third to that stack overhead then lifted a fourth overhead for a total of 430 lbs.

I have little interest in weightlifting aside the natural knowledge it comes from crossfit, but thats why I love you channle Zack! it amazd me how such random things can sparkle a light in each of us. Love, love love that.

hi zack, earned a sub from pakistan through this vid
btw the stone at 16:00 weighs 5 من ( pronunced munn) 1 munn=40 kgs, so 5 munn is equal to 200kgs
whenever you see singles numbers written anywhere with the symbols above, just multiply the number by 40 and you'll have a metric answer in kgs

It looks like the last stone lifting event in the video only needs the weight to be sort of shouldered and the other hand to be released for the lift to count. It would be a good addition to require the lifter to jerk or press the weight overhead.
