When Conan asked where that happened and he said "it's a feeling that I carry" I felt that on a really powerful level. It's like the marginalization becomes so common that we carry it with us even when it isn't happening at that moment.
Those are called micro- aggressions. I'm sensitive to those because they have happened all my life. To me, those are the most insidious. I always liken them what happens to a bull in a bull fight. The bull is stabbed over and over until it becomes too weak from loss of blood to fight back. Then the bullfighter pulls out his sword to finish the job. I fucking hate bull fighting.
Police encounters are a real concern for a lot of us families with members who have a disability. Very cool of Conan to give platform to this.
Yeah, my mom has always been afraid of me having to deal with any sort of authorities due to being autistic. She was a psych nurse and knows all too well that disabled people tend to get pushed around or completely fucked over by people in authority, like the police.
Yes, the officers have been known to kill the disabled on sight.

I can't imagine as a parent not only having to worry about your child's safety around police because of skin color, but adding a disability on top of that is hard, more than hard. No, parent should have to worry like that.
As a black man I worry about more than that. Republicans argue about guns and open carry laws. Im thinking as a black man what If I do shoot the killer at the movie theatre or the schools. How can I convince the police that I am the good guy even though I am a black man with a gun. You got to think about these things and the Impact of Gun laws between whites and blacks. Blacks have a hard time surviving the police with no gun,.
@@anthonygordon9483 very good points. I think it would test the old Republican fantasy of 'good guys with guns' in a shooting situation, if the good guy was black. At the very least, I would expect their response to be reticent to praise but instead admonish you for having risked making things worse, or that you should've let the police handle it, etc., and possibly even questioning you for some reason or suspicion, instead of immediately hailing you a hero, as they would almost certainly do were you white.
I’m a 43 year old Asian and can attest that Ron’s coffee story happened all throughout my life. From when I was a kid and go with my friends go to the corner store to buy candy and the owner gives extra candies to my white friend and not me, to being a grown woman and being shut out of conversations in line at Starbucks... it never really occurred to me that was anything wrong with that until really just a few years ago and just watching how much harder my 4 year old daughter works everyday just to get included just because she looks different other little girls will just naturally tend to go up to other little girls that look like them to ask to play. The exclusion is real .. and the tears are real and you would be surprised how many moms would watch their kids exclude and say absolutely nothing. We need more people like Ron’s friend.
Andrew Yang, who has an autistic son, tweeted about this the other day. Like calling “912” instead for responders to come help who are unarmed. People out here bringing about some solutions!

interesting comment. Use the existing 911 shell, remove and or retrain the 911 re ponders to dispatch the correct entity. Most 21st century COPS (collection of people) dont know anything about judicial law; there not lawyers, nor psychologist, nor nurses, nor doctors nor judges nor teachers yet we have put a lot on there plate that they dont have the skills to deal with. Police are ignorant (not stupid; ignorant). COPS/Police should be classified into NON FIREARM (NON lethal carrying police) to FIREARM police. FIREARM police only are dispatched to a VISUALLY identified lethal weapon situation-PERIOD. All other non-firearm police deal with non-fire arm issues. There is no reason for police to carry FIRE_ARMS OR LETHAL weapns; if you are trained PROPERLY to read situations, body language, COMMUNICATION, and have proper take down measures. PART OF DEFUND THE POLICE NEEDS TO DEMILITARIZE and remove lethal weapons from police. There's a reason fireman don't carry guns going into a fire; LOL; which is a dangerous situation; they use the proper tools and knowledge.

THIS is so important!! Adding to racism, imagine if you’re dealing with a cognitive, developmental or Mental health crisis.. we rely on the police to help, but they aren’t knowledgeable or assessing for those situations & working with the individual and it exacerbates the situation.
He has a white partner that makes up literally 80% of multicultural relationships. Sounds suuuuuuuper multicultural at a number like 80% having black males with white females. Stereotypical racism 101.
Here, in Australia, a teen autistic boy who is non-verbal however reacts very much to scent, slipped away at a national park from his Dad on Sunday & it gets cold there at this time of year. Their state has the highest number of COVID-19 & the least restrictions yet 500 people volunteered & heaps of emergency people came to search & bbq his favourite foods & play his favourite music. He was found earlier today!!! The emergency people & volunteers could not cheer because the noise & attention upsets him however there were plently of hugs! Bloody Beautiful & Brilliant!! PS: Hugs & Tears!

My son, also mixed race and autistic, is 14. Obviously there are a lot of us. The shooting of Charles Kinsey in Miami (2016) is disturbing. Police were trying to shoot an autistic young man, actually hitting his caregiver, Mr. Kinsey. There are many other incidents involving individuals with cognitive challenges. John T. Williams and Charleena Lyles in Seattle. The problem is nation wide. Training is insufficient and a majority of police do not support reform. Thank you for drawing attention to our concerns.

This is some of the rawest talk I've heard since the recent movement movement.
The intersection of disability, especially ID/DD, and being black in America can be scary. Often labled as crazy/dangerous by society :/ bc of variant behavioral responses (e.g. autism).

I really wish that this could be addressed more nationwide. We had a situation a few years ago here where the police were called because of a family's mentally ill son and in the process a neighbor woman in the same building was shot and killed all because she opened the door. Most officers don't seem to know how to approach these situations calmly they were already prepared for the worse
I've always loved Funches and I'm so glad to have a chance to know more about him and his family, and feel embraced as an autistic person

Someone prepare Conan’s kente cloth. The interviews he’s been conducting are some of my favs throughout this entire uprising.
That part at the end where Ron tells Conan to be an active ally and not let racist remarks or behaviour slide if he happens to be a witness to it -- it's a really good starting place for everyone but personally I think Conan has been a life-long practitioner of that advice. Over the years, I've seen him slam people for using antisemitic remarks or fatshaming. People try not to be racist on TV so I haven't seen those cases, but I do believe he doesn't hesitate to slam anyone who is disrespectful or hostile to any minority.
In any case, cool interview. I like both the serious and the comedic discussions, and this one was both a comedic gem and a source of education. Thanks Conan, Ron & everyone at Team Coco.
He let Nick Kroll drop the n word and didn't cut the segment. I appreciate what he's doing but there are dynamics. I'm going to appreciate his work without putting him on a pedestal.

@@no_peace I'm not putting him on a pedestal but his behaviour over the years has been consistently solid. For a comedian it's borderline unheard of to have a career without saying something offensive at least once. Especially since he has been in the business since the 80s and people used to get away with a lot more, and he was having none of it.

It also shows in his traveling segments. He NEVER knocks the culture or the people of the locale. He always makes himself the butt of the joke. I think the closest he got to making fun of a culture was Icelandic food. I need to watch that segment again

Ron’s voice is so soothing and office is massive. I’m assuming those toys are mostly wrestling figures. I mean sure Conan’s office is nice looking. I’m a fan of both of y’all.
I am a white autistic person and the fear about cops is totally justified in my personal experience. They expect you to kiss their ass and they expect you to behave a certain way that isn't accessible to many autistic people, no matter how "normal" we look. The reason i haven't had more issues with them is that i don't usually get singled out. Whenever I've been singled out, from going through a yellow light to being in a park 10 minutes after it closed (and the hours weren't posted), I've had issues with them, from threats to having them reach for their gun. This is my experience as a person who people don't usually clock as autistic. It isn't right for them to have so much power or for their whims to be so destructive
Ron Funches needs to write and star in an autobiographical show on HBO or Netflix. A show like that done well would have significant cultural impact.
This is a model for how conversations like this can happen - depth, nuance, mutual appreciation, a willingness to understand. I loved both of these guys before, but I am in full-on fangirl mode now. Much respect.

Ron and Coco! Man I did not know this cat really before this but I love him so much! I'm mixed race, my son has autism, and Ron articulated so many of my own fears and frustrations about police and society in general. Thanks y'all are awesome love the podcast Conan.

As the parent of a 15 year old autistic brown son I totally get what he's talking about. He's very independent but it's me not trusting the world, because I know he freezes up sometimes and he looks suspicious and won't be able to answer questions if he's overwhelmed. It's terrifying.
Oh yes we also had the police called to our house a few times too! When my son was young he was very loud. He screamed with laughter, when he was overwhelmed, when he was scared. He screamed all the time. So yeah the cops came a few times. I was investigated once when a group of children in our neighborhood assaulted him. It was my fault in their eyes for letting him have a measure of independence to play in the neighborhood with children I thought I could trust. The teens who hurt him got away with it but I was punished along with my son.
This was a very wonderful exchange. I wish more conversations were like this. Thank you for using your platform for positivity.

I have loved Ron since first time seeing him. And always been concerned about his son since he's been open about him somewhat. And unfortunately cops don't normally have good training around mental health and development disabilities.
It is so unfortunate and disappointing that parents have to live with this kind of fear for their children.
Ok, I see a Dreamcast on the shelf in the top left corner of the vid when they enlarge Ron's screen, and also some PS2 games and maybe some Gamecube games. I would love to see a video of Ron talking about some of his favorite games in his collection.
I think thos video is great . My daughter has autism, she's 5. I worry about these things all the time . That she could get hurt because of a misunderstanding . I relate to the cops being called when she has extinction bursts and a bad moment people look at you like your a bad parent it's a bad feeling cuz you wanna defend yourself hey I'm not a bad parent but you also wanna defend your child cuz there going through something we dont all understand n to have someone sit there and roll there eyes or judge . That's why videos like this are important education period on mental disability, special needs etc .

I saw them on tour in Atlanta. Ron was the only one that got heckled there and was still able to make it funny. He’s awesome.
As a white person, the only comparable experience I can make is cliques in high school, work, or as a northerner in the south: As a child to a teen, you walk up to a table to eat at lunchtime and you are shunned or be made mocked. 2) I worked at a place where the person I was going to replace when she went on maternity leave led a clique. When she wasn't around everyone was friendly. When she was around, no one would talk to me. 3) When I moved to the south in the 1990s to the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, it was no lie that southerners were very polite, but they never accepted you. I was there for four years. I knew people there for twenty who said the same thing.
Background: So we live in a city that is very Pro-Trump, and there are very few nonwhites in town. One black man my daughter dated became a member of the family even though my daughter stopped dating him. He lived at my house and ended up taking care of my mom who had Alzheimer's. In fact, he was one of the few people who could make my mom comply when she was difficult. He has stayed at the house on and off for the last ten years. We have windows swing-out going all the way around the porch. They are about 3 feet tall and unless they are wired shut will open. When we were trying to fix something with the windows my friend went and climbed out the windows and was waiting for the nosy neighbors across the street to call the cops about a black man climbing out the windows of my house.
Unfortunately, my friend's life is an example of the injustice done to black people. Sigh. I've got to call him and see how he's doing. He left this podunk town and went to the mountains, where people don't care what color you are.
It doesn't help that podunk towns are full of nosy neighbors. If they aren't calling the police, they are spreading gossip like wildfire!
I dig it so much. It's super hard to try and understand while watching these large conglomerates try and cover their "ass". During these times. But Conan's questions were valid and Ron Funches is a legend. Definitely gave me some perspective.
My son is white and on the spectrum and has had altercations with the police. This is because he walks at a strange rate and has his head down, and doesn't make eye contact. I worry about this all of the time.
Thank you so much for helping to make these conversations more accessible. Social workers take on student loan debt, spend 5+ years in school, and work for less money and support than they deserve. If some police funding could instead, go towards making social workers more available to the public, police depts would benefit along with everyone else.
wish there were more people in the world like ron funches so the world can be a peacful positive place . Ron is the kind of human being everyone should have in their lives . I hope his family stays safe during these crazy times .

I have enjoyed and learned from each of the Black voices Conan has on the past week or so. This convo with RF has been my favorite though -- so much wisdom here.
They really have to train officers or have a second unit that can help in mental health issues. One of my older cousins is deaf and she had been attacked and was upset and officers didn't access the situation and snuck up behind her and grabbed her . Which caused her to fight. Luckily it didn't end the way it normally does. They had to drop the charges but still, its scary to think that I would of never met her if the situation wasn't calmed by a relative interfering and telling them that she can't hear you.

I experienced that cashier not saying a word to me so many times. Karens asking me what are you doing here while I'm waiting at a friends apt lobby
I've gotten the same thing since I'm a white person living in Korea. However, the tone is vastly different. I get true curiosity not hate. Sometimes the silence is from their own language insecurity. I can't imagine if it happened daily, even multiple times a day, with hateful tones often.
I've lost so many friends and potential friends for not letting racist comments and words slip by. One friend I had actually apologized to me, a white guy (well, I look Irish, but I'm mostly Mexican), when she said the N word. I just looked at her and was like, "You're not sorry you said it. You're sorry I heard it. If you were sorry you said it, you would stop saying it. I'm not even a person you should be apologizing to for saying that. I lack the right to do or say anything meaningful on this topic. I wish you would stop, but I don't think you ever will."
Latinos go through pretty much the same thing - not to take anything from black people - we're in this together.
I feel the exact same..my son is only 5 years old and when he is older he may not be able to communicate clearly and help may not come properly. Education should be given to all police officers and first responders. Not every situation requires violence and police presence.

I don't doubt Ron has been type-casted, but I find it so hard to believe that he would work in any role that wasn't specifically designed for him. He is such a unique man in terms of his energy, his looks, his voice - like, why would you ever try to cast him as a gangster or whatever? Did these casting directors even watch his sets? Have you tried NOT being a racist?

Both of my boys are autistic and low on the spectrum. When I saw that video of the therapist getting shot while he's on the ground with his hands up by the autistic teen that he was trying to retrieve, trying to explain that the child with the 🚒 in his hands was special needs. I saw my boys and their therapist. This shit is fuck up and we need reform. Thank you for sharing. Blessed be 🌻🌾
