    Always found the feel in this song elusive. Came across this video whilst trying to figure out how he did it myself. Great lesson, but I actually think it's fingerpicked, not flat picked. I was also having issues trying to sing and flat picking the part, then it got easy when I dropped the pick and started finger picking the figure. Without trying, palm muted fingerpicking also yielded just the right amount of "accidental" ringing notes (typically on the higher strings), and especially on a telecaster due to the shape of the bridge hardware (and of course Springsteen plays a tele). You just angle your hand a bit so every now and again a sneaky high note rings a bit. As for the tone, I believe that "chorus" effect you were trying to figure out was actually just the tone of a small wood room underneath. Small rooms generally lend a bit of chorus effect. Then I think there's some spring reverb from his amp and a studio plate on top of it. Once I dialed all that in, it sounded spot on fingerpicking, but not quite the feel with a pick.

    You can play this with a standard E, but using an E5 allows you to pick the top 4 strings and then just move that pattern down one string for the rest of the chords (with standard E, you have to skip to the open B string). He mentions the E5 fretting at 6:54, 0224xx. I find the fingering he uses to be the easiest; this is shown at the beginning of the video as index (1st) finger holding down the 2 strings on the 2nd fret (as a mini-bar) and the ring (3rd) finger holding down the 4.

    This was a lifesaver. I had 3 days to learn this song to play an acoustic version at a friends Birthday. All the other videos out there used a straight E chord rather than the modal E you use. Also, your instruction on getting this picking pattern down was better than any other. Thanks. I'll post the version I finally come up with once I'm done.

    I really don't think that this is "very simple" - as it needs to be quite precise over the whole song. Sometimes really the easy looking things are the most challenging ones, at least for me. Well done, Justin!

    Unless I missed something, you showed a standard E major in the initial instruction when the actual chord is an E5 with the little finger fretting the 4th. fret of the 3rd. string? The picking pattern doesn't work unless you form the chord as you did during the performance intro. Didn't trip me up, but beginners might get confused.

    I like your combination of proper technique/accuracy and playing with feel / training your ear. Playing by ear is so much more fun, but technique is what brings your playing to the next level....at least for me. Thanks for the great tutorials!...........................You need to have that bad C#m looked at before it becomes serious!

    You never did a break down on that alternate voicing you were doing on E chord. You used a straight cowboy position on the strumming but were not using that on the picking. It looked like a variation of an E power chord but obviously there were additional notes in there. I couldn't quite pick them up visually, I kept waiting for you to 'splain it but it never happened. Other than that, great video as you always do. You captured the heart of that tune for sure.

    Great cover and lesson. Tell me why an amazing guitarist and vocalist like you just do covers of everyone else's work. I'm guessing it takes a special talent to write a great song and I'm not saying you haven't that kind of talent or have you? If so, post your song who knows it might turn out a hit.

      Yeah, during the E chord, it sounds like he's playing a B on the 4th string with his pinky. But he never addresses this in the tutorial...

    • @mikelim7939
      @mikelim7939 4 роки тому

      Hi guys. He sets it out around 7.00 as an E5 chord played 0,2,2,4, so low E string open, A string fret 2, D string fret 2, G string fret 4 (the B you mention). "The thinnest 4 strings" is a slip of the tongue I think, it's clearly the thickest 4. Hope that helps.
