This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much for the time you took to make it! I'm a freshman clarinetist in Missouri and being head drum major (we have three--about 220 piece band) is my dream! I want to get a head start on learning how!
Ah thanks, watching your way of conducting 4/4 really helped improve mine. it looks so much more cleaner and defined now. I'm trying out soon and want to do my utmost best.
I'm a freshman in high school, and I'm trying out for drum major this coming week. Our drum major walked out on us today, so we have to have a replacement since we are only halfway through the season. This video helped me a lot because I had no idea what I was doing.
this was very helpful. I'm a current sophomore in Michigan hoping to be a drum major next year, and i wanted to get a look at how others conducted, just to see what would be the most visible method to keep a large band together. although i do prefer more of a bouncing motion in 2/4, the other two were very clear and had techniques i plan on incorporating into my own style. thank you!
I am one of 3 drum majors in my band but we only taught how to conduct 3/4 (star spangled banner) I just learned how to conduct 2/4 today but I need to know 4/4 tomorrow so this is awesome and easy to understand!
Great tutorial! I was chosen to conduct for class tomorrow and this got me an easy answer and step-by-step process on how to! Keep up the good work (I’ve never conducted in my life and I still found this simple to understand. It does take practice though!)
i remember seeing you comment on some videos of mine before. im glad to see youre continuing your path with conducting, as i still am also! great job overall.
@OliviaMarieABC Just look at my video on 5/4. I didn't specifically say anything about 7/4 but it would be the same concept, since it's a complex meter it will have to be conducted once in 4/4 and again in 3/4 (4+3 = 7 , for those math whizzes ) but that depends on the speed. Sometimes it's faster which in that case you might have to do a form of 6/8 and adjust it around. If you tell me the song, I can post a video. Thanks for watching! -Moonmatt2
+Teneishia Coleman Well keep your confidence up it's what mt drum major told me when i mentioned to him that I'm trying out my junior and senior year if i don't make it junior. just keep your confidence up and don't let the directors intimidate you
@chivagirl123 You might want to conduct in a 3/4 pattern (down, out, up) and pulse the ictus of the 3/4 pattern three times (down, down, down, out, out, out, in, in, in repeat). There might other patterns you could experiment with (like if you get into concert ensemble conducting) but if you are thinking about something for on the field then you might want to stick with what I just told you. Remember to ask your directors too! Don't ever be afraid to approach your director with questions!
Hello! I’m hoping to be a drum major for my junior year! But one problem I have is moving my hand up or down for a crescendo or a decrescendo while conducting with the other. Any ways to fix it
Set a metronome at 80. Conduct these three ways: 1) Conduct a normal 4/4 pattern with just your right hand. 2) With your left hand only, practice doing a crescendo/decrescendo for a full measure of 4/4. 3) Try doing a measure with both. Repeat each step as many times as needed to rinse/repeat. Do this everyday :)
Are you a drum major, because if you are your hands are not supposed to be like that your conducting style is different. What i mean by this is that is different than mine, also there is a better way to conducts 3/4 and there is a more clear way to conduct 2/4 down and out. I am going to put this out there that before someone thinks that i don't know what I am talking about every comp. I have went to I have one first place Drum Major.
@TheTIGER220 By going (Down, IN, up) you lose the ictus by having your hands too close together making it difficult to follow especially on a large football field. If you have a more in depth explanation of your pattern, then I would be all ears :) .
Im in 7th grade. In 8th grade we are allowed to tryout for high school band/ marching band. If we dont make it, we are in 8th grade band. I want to try out for drum major if i make the 8th grade high school band. It would be hard because, the same day that drum major tryouts are, colorguard tryouts are.
good tips but youre very robotic with your patterns. I am the Drum Major from the Blue Devils. What I like to do in slow tempos such as youre using in the video, is to use rebound instead of not using any. loosen up and look like youre having fun! :)
My drum major audition is Tuesday and this helped me so much! Thank you!!
Thanks a lot! I'm auditioning for drum major this year and this video helped me a lot!

I’m going for drum major for next year and this is very helpful
I have had trouble marching in Time for one of our slower tempos in the show and this helped a lot to know what to look for
thanks....trying out for section sergeant tomorrow for next years marching season and we needed to know this.
This helped a ton, I’m trying out for DM next week and missed the clinics the current DMs hosted to help us practice... wish me luck!!
This was a very informative video! My audition isn't for 6 months, but I really needed learn the basics. You delivered!
I was avoiding work by watching this video but it was very informative! If I ever try out for drum major in my band, I'll be sure to review this video
thank you ! I am in vocal music , and i want to become a music educator i grow up . Very helpful .

I'm only in 8th grade (not yet in marching band) and I wanna drum major

This was very helpful for my upcoming drum major audition. I know you published this eight years ago but, thanks.
I'm in 7th grade (going into 8th) but this was very helpful. I want to be a drum major when I get into high school.
TheJhubb7 good luck! I just started marching band and it is definitely an adjustment

Same! I think we’re the same age!
I hope that you got to be one. I think you should be in grade 9 by now?
You in 10th grade now?

I am going to be trying out for drum major next week this video was super helpful!
What happened?

you are actually a pretty good conductor. :) I think you will turn out to be a great music teacher one day.
This is awesome! Definitely the final step i needed.
Thanks so much! I have drum major try outs tomorrow and now I can lift a big weight off my shoulders :)
Lucille Dawson how did it go?
Thank you I had no idea what I had to do to become Drum Major
Thank you! I wanted to get some early practice for auditions and this was very helpful.
helped me a lot in my singing career. thanks man! :)
Thanks for the info. I'm trying out for drum major this Monday. Hopefully it goes well ;)
hey!! did you get it?
Malaguena has 3/4 in it. Common in marching band.
you really simplified two four thanks a lot!!
I liked the 3/4 and 2/4 they were ok but the 4, 4 was kind of weird because you're not supposed to bounce on the down beat
Also on 3/4 you bring your hand in not out.
This was very helpful, I’m trying
out for drum major this week!
thank you so much! I really needed this tbh
I'm so happy I found this! I have drum major tryouts tomorrow (or the day after?)! ^-^ This actually helped.
Our band is doing a piece at 7/4 and another at 5/4. Could you possibly do a video on these?
@chivagirl123 You might want to conduct in a 3/4 pattern (down, out, up) and pulse the ictus of the 3/4 pattern three times (down, down, down, out, out, out, in, in, in repeat). This helped bunches. I'm conducting a few songs for my field show. Thank bro.
very helpful for my future drum major try outs!
Ah.... I'm trying out for drum major on Friday and I wanted to make sure that i was doing it right... O.o;

@@Moonmatt2 doing somewhat better!! Thanks for help
Thank you this was my assignment
Thank you, you saved my ass (Music Conducting Test)
Your 2/4 style might be confusing, I have learned that a "v" style for a more of a march style and a "j" for a mor legato style
yes, i completely agree with this! i am assistant drum major at my school, and i have always conducted 2/4 in the V or j pattern
Thanks you save me from getting scloded
I’m trying out for drum major for my junior year in a couple weeks so I’m a tad nervous!
At MVHS, 4/4 is down in out up.
my audition is tomorrow , wish me luck !!
MADISON SMITH YES!!!! i’m so excited, thank you for this tutorial!!!
Beuh mine is in 2 hours
@@tonyatickletitties2241 how did it go ?
Im major. Thank youu
I'm auditioning for drum major Friday!!
Trying for major, you're 2/4 really helped my chances
most drum majors tap the ictus at the ends of their fingers not in the middle of their hands
how would you conduct a 9/8 time???
could you do the 4/4 in reverse?
Very helpful. Thanks so much.
I really need this for my assignment 😂
Same
....Might have explained 1-2-3-4 are all upbeats, the downbeats are not counted/demonstrated in 4/4 conducting. Thank you.
thanx and this is was very helpful 2 me since im going 2 b the first junior DM :D

@chivagirl123 I would do 3/4 time and accent the 1 so accent, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, repeat
thankyou so much for your video, its really help me.. 😉
