What did you think about Chapter 1?

The first movie is a great movie overall, some stupid decisions but overall very well made, prey at night was just much more stupid but still a good sequel. Chapter one was just lazy, worse acting and dialogue and basically copy paste of the first movie with just Much less skill behind the camera and in the writing.

The first 1 annoyed me for 2 reasons. 1.) Kristen never once put her shoes on and ran throughout the house// woods barefoot. Like put your F#$&ing shoes on!! 😂 She had so many opportunities. Especially after her phone went missing, knocking on the door, or when her and James barricaded themselves in their room. 2.) James was a big ol' doosh. Never believing Kristen and being dick because he got rejected.

I agree with you, I give the slight edge to The Strangers: Chapter 1, while it is far from perfect, I found myself way more engaged with what was going on in this newest version. But still both of these are movies no where near top 30, Prey at Night remains my favorite

I don’t think the movie was inspired by the Mason Murders. It was inspired by a childhood memories of the writer and director of the first movie.

Everything I’ve read says it was inspired by both memories and the manson murders

Also the Keddie Murders (which is a horrific story).

Totally agree with you re: the fact that the trailers made this look like a remake (so why be surprised)? However, I would point out that the director indicated this would be a prequel trilogy and so I think a lot of people's disappointment and confusion is based on that. I personally liked the 2008 film and I don't think it needs to be remade, but I went to see Chapter 1 under the impression that it was a prequel and that was intriguing. If they'd just been completely upfront and said this was a remake/retelling etc. then I don't think it'd be getting the heat it is.

I had that in the back of my mind too when I was watching Chapter 1. Like wasn't this supposed to be a prequel?! Then I just assumed I misread that somewhere. But glad to know I'm not too crazy.

@@MadBloodMatt Yeah, I had to confirm too once I'd seen it. But regardless, maybe we will actually see some sort of origin story (and something a bit different!) as promised in parts II and III.

I think that the reason why people were disappointed was that they wanted the movie to be better, even with the trailers, even if they didn’t expect it to be better.
And yeah, I think that a lot of slasher movies or movies with simpler stories should be short films, and I think it should be way more normalized. Maybe make a double/triple feature of short films, especially with horror, or just make more anthology horror movies. Like I’m a bit surprised that there’s not many horror anthologies with slasher films in them as I think a slasher would be perfect in an anthology movie. Obviously we have All Hallows Eve, but each of those movies have Art the Clown and there’s not enough variety with other genres. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I can’t think of any slasher anthologies atm tbh. But I agree we need more of those! But outside of slashers, creepshow, trick r treat 2007, vhs are all well liked. You got me thinking now though, I need to deep dive into more anthology stuff and then maybe make a video about it.

Sack Head, Pin Up and Doll Face and the fact they are transient killers are the 2 strengths of The Strangers. Chapter 1 seems to want to tie them to this "creepy" town which would be a really stupid move. The original film was ok but the leads were just unpleasant and dumb and this flaw wasn't really fixed in Chapter 1 either

I saw Chapter 1 last night and had a much better time watching it than the two times I've seen The Strangers. Neither one touches Prey At Night.

Agreed. I don't think the new one is good but I think it's a little more fun than the 2008 movie.

Never got into the fan base for strangers. I did not know many people dont like the original movie. Find it bizarre. First one is a well made horror movie. Its a 2000 film. Its going to have characters make bad decisions. I love the original. So much. I find ur title assaulting. The new one is awful. So lazy and the characters are even more dumb. Terrible start for chapter 1

Yeah, I saw the trailer and just wasn’t interested.
I do understand the common complaints about the original, but for some reason I am very charmed by it anyway. I actually like the lack of dialogue in the ‘08 film due to the stark amount of silence or low, eerie, subtle sounds to make the events feel a bit more grounded. I think that helps to balance some of the insanity behind our poor decision-making protagonists. The film is just eerie and it almost feels kind of foreign. I also love the orange-tones and the well-framed cinematography. It captures a very “autumn” vibe and always feels like an ideal October film. I know some people aren’t fond of the handheld cam, but for whatever reason I am partial to it in a lot of movies. Especially with horror, it always makes things feel a bit unstable, thus it’s kind of a subtle psychological trick to create the sensing that something is a little off. I especially love that a lot of the aforementioned handheld in this film is very subtle (again with that word). Even the whispery delivery of so much of the dialogue just creates this…not right feeling. I think on a technical level it is made with an understated mastery. I love the opening with the droning music and the sound of a truck driving past various houses. I think the choice to put our leads in an unhappy place before the real s**t hits the fan also works well to create this almost nihilistic and sobering experience. I actually don’t think the film is as safe as people say, at least not on a filmmaking approach. The script can be rather basic and I do agree with most people that the second half can become a bit tedious, but I also love how uncompromisingly dark the ending is, although I would leave out the final stupid jump with Liv screaming and substitute for ending the film when the strangers drive off after getting the Christian Living pamphlet. So yeah, the film definitely has its flaws, mainly in the writing, but it also takes some unique and, again, somewhat foreign approaches to being scary. I like to watch it on Halloween night with, well, the original Halloween, as I feel they’re very compatible in regards to tone and especially pacing. One thing I often don’t get is when people say Halloween is boring but The Strangers isn’t (or vice versa).
Oh, and one more thing about the ‘08 Strangers is that it was actually a bit of a bold move back in that year to put out a horror film that was so much more stripped back than its contemporaries. The 00’s were big and loud and brutal. So really the original Strangers didn’t actually play it so safe at the time of its release. Oddly, neither did the sequel (during a time where “elevated horror” was becoming all the rave).
Anyway, just some thoughts, but I do get why some people just aren’t really into the first one.

Not a Strangers fan. First one, not terrible but not something I like to rewatch. Prey at Night, I just cannot get past the point in the film where the brother won't shoot that chick that just killed his mom. Total cringe. No urge to see this remake.

Understandable. I don’t know why the hell they greenlit a trilogy before the first was even released. Thanks for watching!
